What Bank has the best looking debit card?

Hi ozbers, I'm looking to open a new bank account. Just for my salary, I don't care about interest rate as i will transfer a portion of this to my main savings account.

ING Orange Everyday with Visa Debit. Good phone app, great phone support, no acct fees, no ATM fees, pay wave % cash back, easy immediate transfer of money between Everyday and Saver account. Free card replacements.

Plus it's a rather snappy orange.

Have used it for years and never found anything attractive enough to make me switch.

Edit: to add, I had mine compromised once (I'd shopped at a store with a skimming device) - they rang me and told me all the info, blocked the card on the spot and stayed on the phone while I drove to an ATM, temporarily unbanned the card so I could get cash out, banned it again for safety and I had a new card in the mail 2 days later. And this was all on a Sunday evening. Top class customer service.

    • +7

Agreed. They have the best customer support.

    • +4

The old cards with the transparent part were sexier.

      • +3

        transparent is always sexy

    • Whilst I highly doubt that your card was skimmed at a store, I 100% agree. ING as far as dispute resolution/fraud resolution are better than most of the majors.

Plus dat orange is quite nice.

      • I've had a checkout person comment on the (awesome) colour of my ING Direct card!

      • Whilst I highly doubt that your card was skimmed at a store, I 100% agree.

That's what ING told me. I'd made a purchase at a store that had been flagged as having a skimming device, so they had to cancel my card.

ANZ allow you to use your own photo as the card background. However, you can't use any photo that might have a copyright, like a photo of your favourite artist.

    http://www.designmycard.com.au/

    • Is there a fee for applying a debit card if you are an existing user?

      • I don't think so, and I certainly wouldn't charge you for it, but you'd best ring ANZ and ask them.

    • +2

A bank I was with a few years ago told me I had to give my custom card back when I closed the account, so I said I lost it.

    • Not available on visa debit cards, according to the link.

    • +1

you think they'd let you use the shut up and take my money photo? would sign up just for this!

      • +1

That would be brilliant, post pics if you manage it :)

edit : bah, guidelines say no.

  • +4

Ed: Maybe I didn't get the right meaning. Do you mean the card with the best services or the best looking (as in visually appealing card)?

    • visually appealing.

      • +3

Okay, and why do you care about how a card looks?

      • -6

You should make that clear in your makn post.

        • +11

I don't think you should be telling anyone about being clear

      • +1

My wife likes her hot pink card from NAB. Each to their own I guess

  • +1

I think the CBA one is the best looking, because you can see the induction coil wires through the translucent plastic card…

    • +1

You can see them on part of the MeBank card too.

  • my rank for the 4 cards ive had
    citi
    cba
    ing
    ubank

    • +1

Citi does indeed look quite nice. It has a good finish to it.

  • why is macquarie on there? they dont have a debit card?

  • +1

ING card looks pretty good with that fluoro orange and all the benefits attached to it (cashback, free ATM).

  • +9

    CBA Platinum gets my vote

  • +3

Wait, so this is a website about bargains and money, and you're asking in the financial category about graphic design?

Shouldn't this thread be in the off-topic category, NOT the financial category?

Most people will not have seen all those various debit cards so how can we make a comparison?

I think the CBA card looks pretty awesome with bright yellow and translucent areas so you can see the tiny circuitry for the RFID chip.

  • +6

Maybe we should have a competition and we'll vote for whichever looks most appealing.

Please don't blur your numbers, and include a picture of the back for bonus reward points.

  • +1

Me bank and fluoro green or pink

  • +3

I have had the BankWest platinum debit for a bit now, and the card is one of my favourite things. Nice black card, an orange line accentuating the 3D look. Pic here.

    • damn.. that's sexy

      • The bankwest Qantas platinum debit looks cool too. Only requirement is that you need to deposit $4k pm to avoid fees.

  • +1

My black Amex looks the bomb.

  • -1

The ING card is kind of ugly but the 2% cash back makes up for it.

  • +9

To an OzBargainer the card with the best benefits is the best looking card, no matter how ugly it is. To me that's ING Direct Orange Everyday,

Apart from cards with good cash back offers, you want a card that pays interest. I don't know of any debit card that does that let alone has a competitive rate of interest but the UBank Ultra can be linked to their USaver and can be set to automatically sweep funds which is almost as good except for the minimum of $100 you don't earn any interest on.

It's also very handy to have a card at the same institution where your interest earning account is so you can transfer funds instantly. The ING Savings Maximiser currently has one of the best rates of interest for amounts up to $100000. Its important to make a deport of $1000 in your Orange Everyday every month to get all the offers.

    • +1

If you want other cards that do the same, you can consider Bankwest hero transaction account pays that you interest for upto $5000. More info here.

And if you are particular about sweeps, then go UBank. Exact same functionality as ING, but better rate of interest. Pretty nice looking card too!

      • Actually UBank is trailing some others including ING Savings Maximiser.

        • Trailing how? Interest rate?

        • Yes

  • +5

Wow.. ING is overtaking Citibank overnight. That's it I'm opening a saving account at ING!

    • +1

Once you go Orange you never go back.

  • Lucky you didn't title your post Which Bank..? As you might remember a 1988 TV ad.

    • +1
      1. the commbank can
      2. the bank that helps australians own their own home

thanks for getting that stuck in my head

  • +11

As a cashier at Australia's biggest retailer, I have respect for anyone with an orange everyday card (if they also have 28 degrees or amex promo cards, I usually ask if they go on ozbargain)

  • +1

Debit Card -> ME Bank Pink Card. 5% cash back on all your PayWave transactions while the bank donates 1cent for every transaction you make to National Breast Cancer Foundation
Credit Card -> Westpac Bank Altitude Platinum & Qantas Amex Card
For Overseas online buying -> 28 Degrees Master Card

  • +1

I am so so glad that I'm not the only one who chooses banks based on who has the prettiest card. Thank you for the validation, OP.

    • +4

Randomly choosing a bank feels smarter then this.

  • -1

    Bankwest.

  • +1

besides the perks of ING direct, I like their card the most cause it's flashy bright orange and "flat" subtle graphics. Black on the back; their colours are like Brisbane Roar (which also has its roots from the Dutch).

The second best looking card imo is the bankwest Qantas platinum debit. Black (or very dark slate), simple graphics and with the QF logo on the corner. Downside with the account is that you need to deposit (and/or withdraw) $4k a month to avoid fees.

Third best looking imo is the Citibank debit card. Kinda modern wavy graphics and translucent blue on one end. It finally has the chip and payWave, but the horrible Internet banking prevents me from using it regularly.

Edit: interestingly, all of my top three choices all have a matte finish.

Btw I think there's a whirlpool thread on this a while ago.

  • I recently opened a CUA (Credit Union of Australia) account for their contactless-payments android app (don't bother if you already have CBA tap&pay, CUA is quite buggy), but the card looks really nice.

Ok so it was really hard to find a picture of the new card, so I took a (poor quality) photo of mine so you can get the idea. The colour is a bit off as I couldn't get the lighting right, but it's a really nice shade of blue.

    Image

I also have CBA platinum, ING, MeBank, ANZ and Citibank (thanks OzBargain for all the account opening offers -_-), and honestly the ANZ visa debit (in black) looks very nice. ING is nice but I hate the black back of it for some reason. The new chipped Citi visa debit looks pretty nice too.

    • Are there any fees for the ANZ account?

      • There were the last time they charged me. They will waive them on certain circumstances on the $5/month savings account for life.

      • +1

        From their fees information:

"You can also apply for us to waive the monthly account
service fee on one nominated ANZ Access Advantage
account if any of the following apply:

        • You are under 18.
        • You are 60 or over.
        • You are a full-time student at an Australian educational
          institution.
        • You receive a disability support pension or mobility
          allowance from Centrelink.
        • You have an eligible ANZ Home Loan, ANZ Residential
Investment Loan or ANZ Portfolio facility (see note 8)
and have your salary paid into your ANZ account.
        • You have a total of $50,000 or more in one or more
of the following personal ANZ accounts – Access
Advantage, Access Select, Passbook Savings, Premier
Cheque, Premium Cash Management, Progress Saver,
Term Deposit, Online Saver or V2 PLUS"

You can also have the fee waived if you deposit $2000 per month into the account. I'm a student so it doesn't really matter, and I don't use the account (only signed up for the $100 free), but the card is nice :)

  • +1

+1 ubank saver and debit card, use any NAB teller, online banking

  • +2

    Me bank lime green card

  • +1

Does OzBargain have a big enough audience to launch a card of their own? I'm not sure what it would look like but it would carry some "in your face" slogan.

  • BOQ grey ones look nice

  • 1: ING
    2: Commbank
    3: ANZ Design your own

    • Sadly ANZ "design your own" only works for the ANZ "access" card (and some credit cards), not the access advantage visa debit. I had such a beautiful card in mind but looks like that's a no-go! Hopefully another bank does it soon :)

  • Heritage Bank allows you to pay $15 to customise your own card. No real OzBargainer would pay for that though.

    https://www.heritage.com.au/Credit-Cards/CYOC.aspx

  • I would say Commonwealth card if you have platinum debit card.

  • +5

It's no wonder orange-coloured ING Direct card is the most popular on the orange-themed OzBargain :)

  • +1

Well, I signed up for one of the ING Debit cards because of this thread. Getting sick of Commonwealth Bank fees. I have Citibank plus card too for overseas travel, though I don't really want to make it my everyday card due to the crappy phone app / website.

  • +1

    http://mebank.com.au/lps/eta/pink
MEBank donates 1 cent per transaction to breast cancer. Guaranteed to impress the chicks which may be what you are looking for.

  • WorldBank ?!

  • NAB ones are pretty good, they have a black one for guys and pink for girls. But to each their own I guess.

  • Well, ING Direct Orange Everyday is the most visually appealing debit card. Orange all the way!

  • Bump!! Wonder what cards are nice looking nowdays? :) :)

    • Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. All the transparent cards I've previously been issued have been reissued as opaque cards since I last wrote. Thought the Hiver card was nice looking especially with its 5% cashback on essentials and its few coloured dots on black. Got a Virgin Money card the other day nice if you like wavy lines in shades of red/orange - quite different looking. Seems having your name and other details on the back rather than being embossed on the front is the current thing. (Are click-clack machines no longer a thing anywhere in the world?) If you care about appearances you probably have a top of the line phone and don't use cards any more at all…
