how long does a cheap chinese phone typically last?

  • +2

Probably riddled with spyware like most of these cheap garbage brands

    • +2

They called it "extra value/added value for our customer", that's what Lenovo responded when asked about Superfish malware shipped out with their laptop.

  • +2

The battery is junk for such a large screen…. A redmi note 4G or ssomething like that would be worth the extra $$

  • If you know how to snare a bargain you can do a fair bit better.

I just stole a Galaxy S3 i9305 for $108. All it needed was a new battery so I bought OEM for $9 (could of gone for a $2.50 one but figured I'd rather spend the little extra since it'll be my primary phone).

    • can you let me know where from?

    • Bet it's not new.

      • +1

Its also stolen. I am assuming the $108 was the cost of transport to and from the heist.

No… the guy just panicked when he was told he needed a new battery and wanted to cut his losses. The guy was such an idiot he didn't even realise his USB cable was faulty. He thought it had major charging issues so he sold it cheap. I came in for the kill and grabbed it.

        • Sigh. I knew it was too good to be true.

        • +2

@kronicmacstigator:I get that its a bargain but its pretty specific/unlikely to repeat itself, but thanks for sharing you story of theft and murder! I mean a nice person would have just said "hey try this alternate USB cable" but hey why not take advantage that's why this planet is so awesome!!!

          @PonyTable:

It was on ebay… what was I to do. Message the guy and help him out? Been burnt like that before, I either get abused for my trouble, told they don't care and want it gone etc…

All I got sent was the phone, the box, a charger and a cable. I worked it out from there pretty quickly. Believe me, I'm the first one to get in and help if I can.

Also… in regards to 'story of theft and murder'. That's what I do, theft and murder, I'm in law enforcement but will remain nameless. So it's just another day to me.

      • Yeah, it's not new but it's a steal for the specs. Still in great nick, I've bought a $2.25 case for it and I wouldn't know the difference.

Keep in mind, I did absolutely grab a Xiaomi Redmi Note for the mother for $100 posted. 8GB/2GB ram/1.7GHZ octacore with five hours use on it! Guy didn't like it so I snatched that as well.

        • EBay or Gumtree?

Aye… "Uhappy" just instantly registers as "Unhappy" the moment it hits my (admittedly somewhat historically abused) brain… It's a bit like naming your product "We're ShifHouse" or sommat…

  • I just wanted to say, I'm having a really great experience with my China phone Gionee Elife E7. But turns out Gionee is a relatively 'big' brand in china :/

    • Good reviews in monsters from Asia. Seems there is a big ? Market in India. Price point $180 without looking.
It is said it has good bezels.

  • decent specs

How is 5.5" classed as a Phablet ??? My ding dong is bigger than that.
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh made in china ;) 7" or 8"+ PLEASE !!!

    • He's a Meniac, Meniac on the floor, and he dances like he's never danced before. Also is Ding Dong another Chinese Phone Brand?

  • ding dong

  • Keep seeing posts from Gearbest lately.

I have had nothing but trouble with them.

All I can do is warn others if there is a problem it will be tough to get anywhere with this site.

Good luck if you buy from them….

So, my uHappy phone has arrived.

Screen is nice and bright, the gap between screen and glass is pretty tight (tighter than my Huawei Y550) so visibility and reflectivity is very good. My LG G2 screen looks far nicer however.

No touch display issues. Doesn't feel cheap, quality is pretty good. MTK chipset supports quite a few apps and games — tested playing with NFS Most Wanted and it's fairly smooth. Not 50 fps smooth, but playable.

    Comes pre-applied with screen protector.

It has 2GB of "Internal storage" and 11 gb of "Phone" storage. SD card supported. The Storage setting allows you to choose where you want apps to be installed to (all three storage areas can be selected). Some apps, such as widgets, should be installed only to Internal Storage otherwise they won't work.

Checked for updates. It's on Android 4.4.2. Good enough I guess.

Now, for the negative points of the device:

    • Camera is of so-so quality, indoor shots with low lighting is not so good.
    • The camera flash interferes with the camera lens — using the flash will wash out part of your image. Very poor design here, makes the LED flash almost completely useless for photography. At least you can use it as a torch.
    • Sound quality from headphone jack is a little lackluster in bass, requires a bit of equaliser tweaking to get the right sound. It also doesn't play nice with headphones with microphones, and will freak out once you insert a 4-pin TRRS connector.
    • There is no e-compass sensor, so you can't tell which way you're facing.
    • The GPS takes a while to lock… or rather, forever. I may need to tweak the NTP settings so that it connects to the Australian NTP server for a faster GPS lock. But this needs root…
    • Charging takes a long time. This might improve over time.
    • The battery, AFAIK, is a 2100mah cell as opposed to 2500mah.
    • Boot loader is locked and I'm working on a way to root the device.

    Overall rating — ★★☆☆☆
    Happiness rating: Hmmm. Mildly Melancholic.

Verdict: Passable, it's many flaws such as it's lack of e-compass, a small battery, long charging times and bad camera design makes this a phone only suitable for basic users.
Yeah, there are a lot of compromises on a $100 USD device, as the adage goes you get what you pay for. I don't think my uncle will mind though as he's a very basic user.

    • thanks for the review!

    • So the big question, are uhappy?
