I still have my HD590s that I bought when they first came out, and they work as brilliantly as they did then. Senns are well worth the asking price.
Good price I bought mine for $400 (normal price) a few months ago which also happened to be my first venture into audiophile land. $327 is a steal

I'd say that $327 is really really amazing price. I've bought mine at around approx $325.00 AUD (Calculated with exchange rate at 2013).
There is a reason why this headphone have been around for almost 20 years (from 1997).
The box/sponge that the mine came in smelt awful… Ah the memories.
If it breaks, I've heard that you can replace broken parts, as the some of the parts are available from Sennheiser if you request it (at price, as far as I know).
I bought a HD600 many months back. The box was so very plain compared to the newer Sennheisers with their anti-counterfeit logos and serials.
Even the serial number on the box was handwritten by a pen marker!
I wonder if they never changed the packaging for 18 years.

I use a USB dac+amp from Schiit called Fulla (USD $79) http://schiit.com/products/fulla
despite being a USB amp the user reviews have been very favourable. And it's money efficient because the dac and the amp are usually about $100 each
Maybe either one of these - Schiit Magni, Objective2 (O2), Fiio E17, C5D depending on whether you're after portable or stationary amps really. Those are some safe picks. There's literally heaps of them out there.
Whats a good amp to use with something like this. I like listening to music while editing photos and currently use a pair of audio technica m50 just running through the pc.
Wouldn't mind something like this but obviously know nothing about getting the best or of them.

I know that I am opening up a can of worm that I'd wish not to open, but I personally think HD600 are relatively easy to drive (compared to other cans that have 300ohm). Amp would help how it perform, but I don't think it's a necessity. Though that being said, yes, amp does make it sound better, but I personally don't think it is a requirement for people to buy amps and DAC.
I had it on with an Asus Xonar Essence STX Soundcard before, and now just with Intel onboard audio.
Audio is now definitely lacking 'some' definition that way.
I only took out the card because I added a few more PCIE cards and didn't want the soundcard to get so hot near the GFX card.
Amp makes it sound better but in my opinion, they don't make the sound quality 10 out of 100 to 100 out of 100 nor no amp makes the sound quality from 100 out of 100 to 10 out of 100. Obviously, if you buy a headphone like this, you'd want to be able to use it to its max potential (I own an amp/dac combo as well for that reason), but it is not the same as "It cannot be used without an amp/dac". HD600 is worse without an amp, but I'd personally go for something more expensive and a relatively cheap amp or/and dac (Something like O2 amp). This being said, I am just saying it for HD600, I've heard about headphones that absolutely requires an amp/dac. This is just my 2c.
Anyways a read about dac and amp by the guy who designed O2 amp.
Also, why don't you get those external DAC/AMP?

The HD380 Pro for $145 is a good choice also.
The HD280 Pro is much better than the 380pro and is cheaper. I've used both.
Haha just goes to show how tastes vary. I find the HD 280 Pro to be flat sounding, dark and lifeless, uncomfortably tight too. I'm not really a big fan of the closed sound though.

You certainly don't get the same spaciousness and breadth of soundstage with a closed headphone but personally I think in terms of closed headphones the 280Pros are 2nd only to the HD25-1 mk2 quality wise. The 280Pros I would say are slightly better in a noisy environment. To me, there's no point with the HD600, 800, or Orpheus unless you can listen in a quiet environment.
Drifting back on topic, the HD600 are really nice cans.

Yeah that's the regular price. They do the same thing for the 598's and a couple of other Sennheiser headphones.
@algy Thanks for the quick reply. Been considering buying some Sennheiser's for a while, and at the moment stuck for considering whether I should buy a DAC/AMP to go with them or stick with my Fiio E07K for a little while first (really just bought to experiment with portable audio).
@norkle: Went back to Noisy Motel where I bought my Fiio from, and they also have the HD600's for $328 with free shipping, with full 2 year Australian warranty. No deal here from Kogan.
@norkle: The HD600's from Noisy Motel arrived an Thursday, and really enjoying rocking them on my Yamaha receiver. Definitely drives them better than my Fiio E07K and my Samsung Note 2, but still surprisingly good even on the portable devices. Now looking out for a DAC/AMP bargain.
I bought a pair of these 10 years ago for AUD$500. I think they're still ok. Only reason I'm not sure is I came into the study a couple of years back and heard some music playing, and I thought - where's that music coming from??? My wife had wanted to listen to some music and she couldn't hear it very loudly so she just cranked up the volume … playing through my HD 600's. It took me about a month to forgive her.
These are open cans so they will leak sound. Not as bad as something like AKG 701s, but they're still going to be audible to those around you at higher volume levels, and if you're using them in a noisy environment you will hear that noise. That can be a good or bad thing. If you really like bass, or you like listening to music really loud at work, or you want to block out external noise then these may not be the right cans for you (Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro are very nice closed phones).
Sound-wise the HD600's don't really do a very good job with classical music IMHO. Strings sound very recessed/dark. But if you like vocals and acoustic music these are great. Smooth midrange gives the music a lush sound.
One simple upgrade worth mentioning is to buy an HD650 cable, some of people pay lots of money to upgrade the HD600 cable to some fancy cables. I only had a basic Fiio E10 DAC/Amp and don't have golden ears and figured spending as much on a cable as on the cans was well into diminishing returns territory, but the HD650 cable was a very cheap upgrade and it may have even made an improvement :-) Do consider getting at a DAC/Amp to get the most out of these. I thought my basic Fiio E10 did a good enough job.

I would definitely recommend Addicted to Audio as they send their products by express post for free. I've received my Fiio E17k DAC within 2 days of ordering. Best service I've had online.
I have a pair of this cans that I bought over 10 years ago ($300 US). Had to replace the foam part of headset but it still sounds amazing today. Well worth what I paid for it, but do your research, you will not hear the full capability of this unless you have a proper amp that can drive it.
