Heard of alot issues of screen cracking in this model

    • +4

No problems with mine. Had it since shortly after launch.

    • +1

Not sure why your getting negged, your quite right. Also issues with waterproofing. The cracking screen and rear and Sony's refusal to acknowledge the problem turned me right off this phone.

    • Z3 for 5 weeks and rear glass cracked by itself. Wish I was aware of the problem before I picked it over the note 4 :(

      • +2

        Z3 or Z3 Compact?

      • you must of treated it like crap (or you're talking about the z3, not the z3 compact)… I've had mine (z3c) since the beginning of the year and it hasn't gotten so much as a scratch

        • Negative, been in a Ringke Fusion case since purchase and never dropped it. I've heard others have had the phone crack from being in their front pocket too. Surely Sony wouldn't expect people to keep their phone in a bag and never in their pocket?

        • The glass on mine cracked just sitting on my table charging, I had never taken the phone outside and the only thing I had done was take a few 4k videos of my computer room to see how they looked.

It wasn't a smash style crack it just had a big spiderweb pattern of hairline cracks all over it.

They refused to cover it under warranty despite there being many other people with the issue online.

    • +2

Yes, the fragile screen cracking is a common problem with the current Sony models. Plus this is Kogan, so no warranty. Not worth the risk.

      • +1

That what i experienced, although SONY accept replacement, Kogan refuse to help. Say no to Kogan, they just want to ripe your money and run!

    • +1

No problem with mine yet, touch wood

    • +3

What amazes me about the Xperia range is the amount of times the screen cracking issue is bought up. Not saying it doesn't exist but I am saying it pales in comparison to …

      … the phantom input issue.

Now to be clear I am not certain that it wasn't fixed for the Z3 range. However I am certain it existed and wasn't fixed in the Z1, Z Ultra and Z2 models and all similar Sony device models from this range.

Phantom input basically means you have random input occurring. Right in front of you. It's horrific, it's hard to explain how bad it is until you have lived with it.

To make a long story short this problem is/was (I hope for your sake) bad enough to make every single other aspect of the phone pointless as in I didn't want to use it. It turns your device into an unpleasant time bomb - it can literally do anything randomly. You don't know what it will do on it's own. So pics might be sent to wrong people, things can be deleted without you knowing, games are screwed up by random inputs. Overall you start to second guess the GUI which is EXTREMELY unsettling to the user.

I know there is a "fix" (it doesn't really work unless you want to bash your screen instead of touching it) but:

      1) I shouldn't have to root my phone to make up for Sony's lack of product testing

      2) Sony let it go over at least 2 generations despite knowing about it. They didn't fix it. It was a MAJOR design flaw that, like I said, made every other aspect of the devices count for nought.

This isn't something that "might" happen like screen cracking, it's a fundamental and very bad design flaw.

Personally it's been enough for me to never buy a Sony phone again.

      • I have a friend that bought the Z3 and 2 days of owning the screen cracked and has been waiting for allphones to sort it out, so far its been 5 weeks without a repair or replacement phone

        • It took over a month for mine to be repaired after it reached Sony's AU repair centre and they refused to cover it so I had to pay for the replacement glass.

        • @PiratePete1911: I like sony products I have their TV, playstation, dslr and not had any issue yet, I was looking at the Z3 but by the sounds here I'm glad I not, more reason to push people back to apple (much faster repairs)

        • @asa79: I like sony products as well, the phone has been great since I had it fixed, it makes me think it was just shoddy from the factory.

My PS3 and Sony TV have been going strong for a long time. Its a shame their service isn't as good as the product!

Apple service is really amazing but I just don't like iOS at all.

      • I have had 4 Sony phones in the last few years (2 for me and 2 for my partner).

Both the same models. Xperia V mdoels, then Xperia Z Ultras.

Both the V models had extreme sensitivity issues, of which you are describing. And both of them the charger port eventually broke.

Then the Z ultra models, both have some sensitivity issue, however is a lot better. Usually just rub the screen down with a cloth of your shirt will be enough to stop it doing it. Just the smallest amount of grease or fingerprints will set it off.

One of them had a screen crack, that was nothing that I did. I was literally using the phone then it cracked. No BS, this actually happened in front of me.

I called Sony about it and they inform me it's user damage and not under warranty. I told them I read online about how these screens crack all the time and they told me that 'there is many things you can read online that will back up any statement by any body'. They started getting hasty and were downright being condescending saying I broke it. I told them this phone call is being recorded, and they instantly changed tune and sent me the details of where to send the phone to for repair.

Long story short, stick to your guns if you have this screen crack issue, tell them the call is being recorded and get your phone fixed.

The other phone has not had any issues with screen cracking though, but it was also bought about 6 months later (perhaps from a fixed batch?)

        • Is it not illegal to surreptitiously record telephone conversations?

        • @Pacolito:
Not if you are involved in the conversation, but check your state. QLD is fine.

    • Pretty sure that this is because the phone is water & dust proof. Evident by the fact that when the screen cracks, the digitizer breaks thus rendering it useless (Happened to my Z3). I'd imagine that other phones with a similar high level of proofing would have the same problem too.

That said, despite that, it is a fantastic phone with an awesome camera. Can't recommend it enough

    • -1

Actually all of the Z models are prone to it yet the % rate is quite low. I would put this somewhere in the league of the "iPhone 6+ bending"

  • +9

I see they upped their price from 2 days ago from $499 up to $532. Just in time for the 20% off. Had they kept it at the original price it would only be $400.

    Edit - typo

    • -1

      OMblyGombly!

      • Think youre being downvoted because it wasnt funny enough. Unreasonable, but nice try. Better luck next time.

  • I've had my Z1 compact for two years and it has copped an absolute beating. My phones rarely last longer than 4-5mths and I've been through iPhone 3-5, Galaxy S3,S4 and S5 and none have lasted as well as this one.

Unfortunately a lot of people reported the Z3 as having a few technical glitches which is a shame. Especially if you are buying a grey import that can't easily be sent back for warranty.

  • This is soooo tempting.

Not sure whether it would be better to buy this grey import with non-AU charger and 1 year warranty, or wait a little until price drops in AU and get one with 2 years of warranty.

  • I bought one this afternoon OP but just be aware guys this will be a D5833 model and not the D5803 which is sold locally. Have a look at the links below for more info.
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56246450&post…
    http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies

    • +4

We get the D5833 here in Australia. D5803 isn't available locally and won't work with a lot of networks.

      • That doesn't necessarily apply with Kogan as they sell overseas versions.

    • +1

D5833 is what's sold locally and the one you'd ideally want in Australia.

  • +1

Mate had an issue with his Z3 waterproofing. Leaked through the camera lens side. No acknowledgement from Sony. Wiped their hands clean.

    • could he claim any warranty in the end?

      • Nopes. Wanted a fee to fix it.

    • Agreed. Did a waterproof test in the bathroom sink for about a minute. Phone died an hour later.

Luckily it made a full recovery after about 3 hours submerged in rice.

Before anyone asks, yes I've done the pressure test, and no the flaps weren't open.

Unfortunately the phone is just not waterproof, or you are lucky if you get a waterproof one. A great phone in all other respects.

      • Slightly off-topic: 3 hours in rice isn't nearly long enough. You shouldn't even try to power on a wet device until the 24-hour mark with the rice method, preferably even longer. Trying it at 3 hours could be what destroys it. I'm glad it worked out for you though.

        • ah yes, always have that anxious feeling of wanting to try power it up but then not wanting to in case I screw it over.

  • I had a Z1 inside a case in my pocket which cracked while walking down stairs… That said, my parents have the Z1 and Z2 for about a year with no issues. Not sure about the Z3/Compact, but in any case, always get a heavy duty cover for these phones!

  • +1

For those interested, the Z3 full size (non-dual sim) is also available for about $540, after discount, from Kogan's eBay.

Advantages: bigger screen with 1080p resolution (as opposed to 720p), 3gb ram (as opposed to 2gb)

Disadvantages: bigger (not suited for some), more expensive

  • The battery life on Z3 is ridiculous. I was able to stream music via bluetooth for 2 days straight without charging. No other phone I've tried came anywhere close to the Z3.

  • Dammit, dammit, dammit! Just paid $525 for mine last month.

Anyhow, awesome phone, highly recommend it. From what I've read the cracked screen issue was with the Z1.

  • +2

Can anyone tell me how Kogan warranty works? I'm most concerned that if the screen breaks, can I even get it repaired.

  • +1

    Is this D5803 or D5833?

  • I hate this website. (Just bought the green one)

  • +1

I love my Xperia Z3c. It went for a dip in a pool for an unknown amount of time and came out fine. Easily the best phone I have ever owned and this is a great price.

  • +2

Just in response to the comments complaining about the warranty/grey import situation - please correct me if I'm wrong but Kogan is an Australian retailer, you should still be protected under consumer law. The only difference between buying the Z3C from Kogan vs say a Telstra shop should be that Kogan are (more) obnoxious and shit. I got a full refund on a grey import from Kogan a year or so ago with minimal effort.

I had purchased a HTC One V (grey import, Asia model) and eventually the power button stopped working. Kogan agreed the phone was broken/faulty after they got me to send the phone to their "lab" in Melbourne. They offered me a "coupon code" that expired in 30 days for the website (half the original value of the phone, lol) because they said they couldn't replace it. I emailed back with my relevant consumer rights quoted and asked for a full refund, and it was in my bank account a week later.

Kogan sucks ass with warranty, and yes the stock are grey imports, but (and please correct me if I'm wrong, don't want to spread misinformation) you should still be protected by ACL - it's the retailers responsibility to handle your warranty etc, not the manufacturer's.

    • +1

Kogan Hong Kong (who you're buying Grey Import from) is not an Australian Retailer and therefore ACL doesn't apply.
If Kogan Australia were selling you the phone, then you probably are copvered by ACL, but I'm confident that you'll find Grey Imports are all managed by the Hong Kong company.

      • My understanding is that it doesn't matter which subsidiary ships you the phone. It's all the one shopfront. ACL will still apply and can still be enforced. From Kogan's own Warranty Terms and Conditions on eBay:

The warranties and product support set out in these Terms and Conditions are provided by Kogan Australia and Kogan HK … Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. The warranties and product support that we offer and provide pursuant to our Terms and Conditions are in addition to the consumer warranties and guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law.

A quick Google finds Reddit/Whirlpool threads saying the same thing (though anecdotally). It seems the only difference is where the product is returned for a warranty assessment.

        • +2

If you don't pay GST, you're not covered by ACL..
Kogan may choose to observe ACL, but they're under no legal obligation to comply.

        • @scubacoles: Wrong. GST has nothing to do with it - GST is a tax, nothing to do with ACL. You are dealing with Kogan, an Australian registered company so you are definitely covered by ACL's. It doesn't matter where Kogan source their product from. To say otherwise is like buying a fully imported Toyota and then have Toyota Australia say it's not covered by warranty because it wasn't manufactured here.

        • @johncros: well that's news to me. always thought grey import products only had the warranty from the seller (e.g. if Kogan's default is 1 year) and not the ACL 2 years where manufacturers would help you (or is it still up to the seller in a way?).

Nice if that's true, but knowing Kogan still probably have to jump through some hoops to get the replacement goin.

        • +1

          @johncros:

If you were actually dealing with "Kogan an Australian registered company", you'd have to pay GST… It's pretty simple. Australian registered companies are required to identify GST on their invoice…

If you aren't paying GST, you're dealing with Kogan a Hong Kong registered company who happens to share the same name as Kogan an Australian Registered Company. It doesn't matter that both (likely) are owned by Ruslan Kogan, they're separate legal entities.

If you buy from Kogan Hong Kong, you're essentially travelling to Hong Kong to buy the phone and as such, you're covered by ACL the same way that you would be covered if you jumped on a plane to Hong Kong to buy a phone in a shop there (ie you're not covered at all). As previosuly stated, Kogan Hong Kong may choose to observe ACL, but they are under no obligation to do so.

It's completely different scenario to buying a car from Toyota Australia (which you pay GST on).

        • I give up, you win. Seems a tax and the ACL are one and the same in your world.

        • +2

And for those others living in the real world who can tell the difference between a tax and a legislated consumer guarantee but are wondering about Kogan and the ACL (whether you buy it from Kogan AU or Kogan HK) have a read of their T&C at http://stores.ebay.com.au/kogan/pages/warranty-terms

          Pay particular not to:
"ii. Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. The warranties and product support that we offer and provide pursuant to our Terms and Conditions are in addition to the consumer warranties and guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law."

    • You say Kogan are obnoxious and shit yet you very quickly were able to get a full refund. In what way could Kogan have been less 'obnoxious' and less 'shit'? I've bought many items over the years from Kogan and on the 2 occasions I had faults they did full refunds with a minimum of fuss. I was offered replacements or repairs or refunds as required by the ACL straight off the bat. Easy as and a lot better than dealing with some of the bigger players i.e. mobile phone manufacturers who are always difficult and try anything to get out of their obligations.

      • It's a good thing that your anecdotal experience was better than my anecdotal experience. Personally, I didn't like that they tried to palm me off with a coupon code for their website, and intimated that it was my only option. And while there was minimal effort on my part other than stating my rights and insisting on a refund, the entire process from start to finish took more than a month. I imagine that many people unaware of their consumer rights would take the coupon option.

Compared to dealing with many other retailers (eg, buying an iPhone direct from Apple instead of through Kogan) - yes, they were comparatively poor in my opinion. Your comment mentions mobile phone manufacturers being shit, but other than Apple, which of them even sell directly to the public? ACL obligations are on the retailer, and as far as retailers go, I don't think Kogan is the gold standard.

        • +1

You're right, Apple is an exception to the rule. In relation to the other manufacturers I was referring to getting warranty support. I've had the pleasure of dealing with Nokia, Samsung & Sony over the years and they are all atrocious. Try getting joy from any of them. As I said, Apple is probably the exception but then so they should be given what you have to pay to enter their club.

And the one I've has issues with that sell direct are Sony - they are the pits so don't back away from a Sony product because its supported by a 3rd party and not the company themselves - you could only do better.

  • How's battery charging time with z3/z3c? I heard it takes 4hrs to fully charge.

    • My Z3C has just charged from 7% to 99% in 2.5 hours with an 1.3A charger. Should be faster with the one that comes in the box from memory it was 1.5A.

  • What's the next cheapest available? I would get this if I could claim TRS which I unfortunately can't.

  • I have this phone for months, no issue, very happy with the it. Battery life is amazing. Good value for the money

  • So tempting.

  • I still have the old original Xperia S, despite a few scratches and a missing port cover for the USB she still works pretty good for an old piece of tech!
Having this one for nearly 3 years now I have been looking for a worthy replacement and was thinking a reduced price Z3 compact would be the one.
Now after reading all these negative points of the phone by other users I'm stumped and will keep plugging along with me trusty old phone!

  • +2

Brilliant phone. Very sturdy, have dropped many rimes over the past 6 months, not a scratch. Really long battery life, two days easy with more than average use. Great price.

  • I have the Z3 From HTC One X. The phone build itself is brilliant, the screen quality is amazing, waterproofing works, battery life is brilliant, it is fast and smooth to operate. Problem is you must keep the screen clean or it registers fake touches, painful when playing games and the UI isn't as nice as HTCs.

    • +1

Yeh always thought Sense UI was amazing, always was my fav even back during older Android days. Too bad my One X's batt life was piss poor and the sim card stopped registering for me.

  • Has anyone ordered in past more than one phone and been charged import duty etc for them?im wondering if the value these at there full price or the price with 20% off?
As if there full price then if hit with import fees etc then deal is not as good.
Is it better to order one at a time than two same time and will they not see two was ordered and ship them both same time?
I did read somewhere that could order in another name and address yes could use wife's name but address would need to be same.
Or can one be sent to au post parcel locker but saying that they might not deliver to a parcel locker it being a courier?
Need to get two phones not sure what models yet but with discount is under $1000 but if they value at ebay price then be over not sure what to do.

  • sold out?

    • They all look sold out to me as well.

      • +1

Damn…missed it…too much thinking.. next time should be buy first and think later LOL

        • A new listing is up as @thangn pointed out below. :P

    • +3
      • Can anyone confirm if this new listing qualifies with the 20% off voucher?
When going into their online store and going to the 20% off sale section the phone doesn't appear but it is in their main store so am not sure if it is part of the sale (or is excluded).

        • +1

Yeah it works. I'm not home at the moment but from what I can remember if you click "add to cart" instead of "buy it now" you can test the discount code out on different items.

        • @thangn: Works! THanks!!!!

  • Ended up biting the bullet and buying it. I actually got it for $417.78 because they dropped the original price slightly to $522.23.

  • +1

I've accidentally put my elbow on this phone's screen to lift my weight and get myself out of bed (I'm 102kg) screen didn't crack, I can say after that 'test' the screen is quite strong.

  • +2

Just wondering if anyone received the z3c from this deal yet?

    • I've gotten an email saying it's been processed on the 31st and to keep an eye out for tracking details soon but not gotten any follow up email saying it's been shipped or any tracking number

    • Thanks, same here.

    • Sadly enough I've received my screen protectors, charger and case from China already. I just need the phone now.

    • Ordered mine last Thursday and I'm still waiting on information.

      • Just got an email saying my order has been processed. Waiting on shipping info now.

        • Just got a reply from them(I queried how much longer they expect until it is lodged with their courier) Only to be told it's still in processing… Despite the fact the last email they where boasting with much patting themselves on the back that it had cleared processing.

  • Purchased z3 compact on eBay 29th March have not received any communciation from Kogan yet.

  • +1

Just got emailed tracking details. I didn't realise that they don't change it to "shipped" until it arrives in Australia, I was expecting tracking etc. all the way from HK.

  • +4

Just got mine. Didn't have any emails or notification from Kogan or eBay that it was sent but here it is.

    • Hows it look, is the generic charger any good?

      • +1

Everything looks good so far. The Kogan charger is a black 2.0A charger with a similar shape to an iPhone charger, that is with the usb port on top. Haven't used the Kogan brand charger yet. The instructions are in Chinese and I believe mention charging it for 30 minutes before first using it.

Just turned it on and it's in Chinese. The first pop up that you get I think mentions something about anonymous usage statistics, so if you don't want that untick the box when you get the chance. To change your language open the app drawer or quick settings and look for the settings icon which looks like a spanner crossed over a screwdriver. Scroll down to the option that has a keyboard icon, then click on the first option and pick your language.

Got mine on Monday, I made a mistake above I mixed up the D5833 and the D5803 model, as someone pointed out D5833 is what Australian stock would be as has our 4G frequencies. But despite my mistake as it turns out I ended up getting a D5833 from Kogan which was rather nice.

I manually flashed to Lollipop firmware 23.1.A.0.726 – Unbranded – Australia (1288-4214) as per this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/general/list-stoc… and basically followed this video although because it's for a different phone some of the menu layout is slightly different, same steps though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZtXrKl2WuE

I checked for software updates on the phone when I got it and it said none available. I also installed the the Sony PC Companion and checked for updates with that, same thing none found. As the phone was new I didn't have to worry about losing all my data when flashing so I figured why not. Plus as it's Kogan international stock I had no idea what country/carrier it was originally from so who knows when an OTA update would arrive!

  • +1

Mine was attempted delivery today but no one was home. Getting it redelivered next week. Courier was TOLL, although I never received tracking info.
