Verbatim 320GB Portable HDD 2.5" for A$68.90 @ Officeworks. [Expired]

430

Went to Big-W (Highpoint/VIC) for this portable drive but to my disappointment they were sold out. So I dropped by Officeworks to see if they have any.

To my surprise, they have plenty in stock, in various colors and 10c cheaper ;) I picked up one blue and one pink (for the boss of the house :)

Try your luck guys.

I just checked the online price for this price @ Officeworks, they still listed it for A$114.

  • Yup, went to OW earlier this morning (Highpoint,Vic), wanted to avoid the crowd at Big W

  • +2

obviously its cheaper. to avoid a 5% discount on price match

    • I think it is also to avoid the time required for the price match procedure. Damn sometimes it takes me 15 minutes!

    • This is exactly why they did it - though I'm surprised they didn't do something like $68.99 so technically it would be 1c cheaper.

  • Any idea if the drive is SATA or PATA?

    • Windows hw properties showed this drive as samsung hm320ji. According to this site http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16… it is a sata drive.

      • +1

I dont think you can get any new external drives that are pata anymore - everything is sata

      • Interesting. I opened mine up as soon as I got home and it was a Toshiba MK3255GSX on the sticker, same as reported in windows. Its SATA2.

        • toshiba for me too..

  • Got one at big w this morning, it was packed but everyone was eyeing the dollar thong and cheap PS2. I got in and got out before there was even a queue there. Good price nonetheless!

Yeah, I was waiting when the doors opened at my local to get the Arana BBQ, which I discovered on arrival had been discounted a further $10 to $136! Works great too, just cooked lunch on it! :)

I was 1st in and got mine, but they only had 6 for the whole (large) store, so the other five guys I was chatting to got lucky, but that concluded within 5 minutes of us getting in there! Gonna be a lot of unhappy folks today starting at 8.05am! ;)

I can't whine coz I got what I wanted, but pretty poor form on BigW's part not having reasonable stocks for such an event!

      • I am an unhappy guy mate, but I spend $150+ at TOP RYDE city shopping center at their shop today. So this centre should be the happy guy. :-)

  • Bought 1 in OW Five Dock. Only 1 left - in pink. Guess what colour i was left with =[
And they have also marked down their price to $68.90, so no more price match.

Mine also shows up as a Toshiba MK3255GSX.

HT in North Ryde had them for like $55…

too bad they were all pink

    • lol, if u price that at OW would they let you hvae another colour….prolly not aye..

    • +2

$55 is a steal! meh being pink! theyre less likely to be stolen!

    • mate, how many were there when you went down?

    • I didn't see any, when were you there?

  • but yeah regarding BIG W i went inda arvo since i was just in the area at Fairfield and it was still packed, friends went in this morning but obviously not early enough….no thongs at Liverpool of Wetheril Park

  • Had a quick check at Officeworks in South Yarra at 2 PM, and they had about 7 of them in PINK ONLY with no other colours available. Price was still marked at $114, and I didn't bother asking if they were available for $68.90 or if they'd price match Big W.

Some retailers are probably going to have a whole bunch of these in pink once this day is over. :)

    • dunno what the aversion to pink is - at least you know no one would want to steal it!?

    • The shelf price was left at $114 but when scanned they come up at $68.90

  • I managed to get one red and pink… really wanted a blue one… ah well..

  • Has anyone managed to remove the enclosure and use it as a internal/laptop/ps3 hard drive?

  • ow preston they had just blue and red

  • Just got back from holmesglen OW and they had none in stock that i could find. No verbatim drives in store at all what ever the size.

  • Sucks how some places ran out of stock real quick yet there are others who have heaps of excess stock.

  • When I left the store about 2 hours ago, there were 3 blue ones left in Osborne Park WA. No pink, no red.

  • Had a look at BigW chermside at about 3 this afternoon, all gone should have know better, but dropped in to OW at windsor on the way home and they had it marked down to 68.90 with probably at least 5 or 6 of each colour left still. Very happy with officeworks, wonder if price will go back up tomorrow…

    • The price will probably go back up on Monday, unlikely to go up tomorrow as its a Sunday…price changes generally happen on weekdays, not weekends. This might be an exception to that general rule though, you never know (but highly unlikely)

  • Chadstone Officeworks has none left - I was lucky to get one early on put on hold for me. That said, towards the end of the day there were about 2 on hold there. OFficeworks only does holds for 24hrs…so if anyone wants one tomorrow they might be able to try their luck! Otherwise they are completely sold out - as are several other Officeworks stores - looks like the word about this deal spread fast.

    • Yeah, they sure to spread fast. The funny thing is, officeworks changed the display tag to $68.90 using just the normal white tag. No fancy yellow or specials tags. Hence, I don't think it's their intention to advertise this. Yet, they're still sold out at most outlets.

  • the case is a bit stiff to pull apart and you are likely to void the warranty by doing it since you have to break a sticker to remove the drive from the board… you also may break a few of the tabs holding it together

but i upgraded one of my laptops with the drive and inserted the old drive back into the pink case

    • how did u pull it apart? are there any screws to loosen? so the case can be reused?

      • I also pull it apart and upgrade my PS3 to 320GB, sweet. Use back the case for the old 40GB hdd.
It is easy to pull apart just insert the flat screwdriver into the vent hole and pull towards the bottom, it is just clip on (no screw at all). Start from 2 side vent hole and works it around. I manage to get it out without damaging the cover. And try not to damage the sticker that provide the warranty (I just lift it up at 1 end).

  • Virginia QLD officeworks has some left( pink and blue).

  • Maroochydore had about a dozen left when I got mine.

  • went to blacktown OW.. sold out.. the guy called wentworthville for me.. sold out too.. called parra.. had a few instock.. got them to hold the pink for me (for my sister).

    win.

    Enjoy

nope. it's still listed as $114. maybe they haven't update it.
but ph 4.95 regardless how many you buy it sounds like a deal !

      • Add it in ur cart, when u checkout it reduces the price!

    • yea just ordered one online for $68.90 + $4.95. Thanks rewstar :)

      • didn't work to me….

        • looks like they updated their website after midnight so the price is back up to $114

          • @ngupy: Yup, price was back to $114 at about 12:30 AM AEDT (midnight in Adelaide). I managed to get an order in at 11:55 PM for $68.90 + $4.95, so thanks rewstar for the heads up. :)

    not on the website anymore

  • You know…if any Big W stores do have any left after today…at their "regular" price, rather than $69, you could try telling them that Officeworks is selling them for $68.90 and they MIGHT let you get one as they have a lowest price guarantee policy, too (though not a 5% lower one).

  • the drive only shows 298gb free in windows xp

    • +1

google it dude. Its an issue with almost every hard drive ever created.

  • Officeworks in Vic Park WA had a few, managed to get a red one, then when I came back with a friend later to grab another one, it was gone. If i have my receipt, the guy said more stock would come next week, could we just use my receipt to "match" the deal from the same store a few days earlier?

  • Went to officeworks today, signage said 68.90 but they scanned in at 114. I mentioned that I heard they were selling for 68.90 yesterday, and due to the signage still up they gave it to me for 68.90 :)

  • Called aorund 5 Melbourne stores today and all either sold out or won;t match. Sale was for 24 hrs only.

    • i gave up, went to bing lee and got a 250 WD essential for $75. Its a better brand, but smaller size.

      • Bing L€ee and bargain just don't go together

  • Ahh i must've just been lucky. I just went to my local store on Nepean Highway in Victoria and asked someone to show me the portable hard drives. I asked for a price check on the verbatim 320gb, which I also noticed was marked as 68.90. Although it scanned at $114, they were more than happy to just give it to me for $68.90. I think the guy then mentioned to another that the price needed to be changed.

    • good one mate :)
