HP Compaq 515 AMD Athlon64X2 2.1GHz 1GB 160GB 14" - $497!

110

I suppose this isn't exactly a high end machine but would be nice for the kids/family..the other options that I can see in this price range are just the netbooks with a 10" screen.

The lowest price on staticice at the moment is $614.

  • Any ideas how it looks, does it have a glossy finish on it like most of the other HPs?

    • Does have a glossy finish i checked it out when i was in there and wasnt impressed with the performance the price is nice though for what it has and it may be much better with Windows 7

  • Thank you for this!!

Was looking for a budget laptop for family overseas :D

  • WOW have a similarly speced Acer with 2gb ram, 15.6" screen, 250GB HDD, Win 7 Pro etc for $599 after $68 cashback. That I find to be a better deal…….

  • +2

this unit i don't mind and i'm looking for an excuse for a 2nd (or 3rd) laptop

14" is great, ATI Radeon is fast for an IGP and whips Intel GMA and it has Vista Biz… may be eligible for a $20 W7 Professional upgrade

  • where's the link for $10?

    • Yeah, I only got the link to the $US 20 disc.
I wonder where the $10 upgrade is.

  • got mine today.

Surprisingly, no glossy screen. A few of the other ones on display have glossy screens but I wasn't sure if they were of the same model.

    • Ok, it's still sort of a bargain. I might get one for a friend.
I recently picked up a HP 4515S [VA037PA], shiny cover and stuff. lol.

      I haven't ordered the Window 7 disc yet however…
I am still looking for that $10 upgrade link.

  • I ordered this laptop a while ago, And have had heaps of problems with it. Just wondering if anyone else was having bad luck with it? I would also like the link for a $10 win 7 disc. As I'm probably giving up on xp and going for win7 next.

For those who are interested, Windows xp has crashed 3 times and I've had to format & reinstall xp to fix it.

As soon as I turned it on, it started finalizing the windows xp setup, and it blue screened during that process. And would not recover from it.

I had to use the included discs to format the hdd and install xp, apps & drivers from scratch.

Then after 2 weeks the system crashed again, it got stuck at the windows xp loading screen (black screen with windows logo, and blue progress bar). Had to format & reinstall again. Tried restoring an old registry, chkdsk, scanning for spyware etc. And even a windows repair, which failed.

And about a week ago, it got stuck at the loading screen again, rebooted it, and it started a chkdsk and seemed ok, and then a couple of days later it crashes again. This time it loads XP but hangs at the desktop. No icons appear, Mouse cursor moves, caps lock toggles the led. But can't launch task manager, same thing happens in safe mode.

I've done diagnostics on the ram and hdd, My theory is that it might be overheating, maybe the vents at the bottom were covered up? I'll install a cpu temp logger so I can review it. If it's not overheating, I'm thinking maybe the sata drivers aren't working right. causing corruption on the hdd.

Anyways just wanted to know if any1 had the same problem, cos google doesn't seem to turn up anything.
