  • typical price for lens:

no built in flash kills it for me

    • The lenses arent cheap, but if you have existing canon glass, you can get an adapter for $40 from ebay to use them, with complete af and everything. Thats what makes this deal interesting. Its a nice, small, cheap b cam.

    • +1

The 1st one / bit is always cheap. Then the Salami tactic makes the price rise.

  • I had this model, but the auto focus was painfully slow. With young children it was never fast enough to capture a moment before they darted off. I've since changed to the Nikon B&H special from last year and am much happier.

  • +2

Keep in mind that this camera is now two generations old. That said, you're not going to find the EOS M3 for this price (at least for a while).

Wish we had a deal like this for the sony a5100 or a6000

    • Try to find a lens like the 22mm in Sony land and have fun pricing it up.

One reason I still haven't bought a Sony is that they haven't focused enough energy on making great affordable lenses. It's their major weakness.

      • So true.. Their cameras are really good but not many lens options for E mount cameras, especially lacking fixed aperture lenses f2.8

  • Great camera if fast autofocus speed is not your priority. I am still in love with the 22mm EOS M kit I got ages ago. Lots of good kit bargains were offered a couple of years back.

  • STAY AWAY, autofocus on this is SH*T…

  • I think this EOS M which is Canon's try their luck in repeating the run away success of Sony's smaller mount ended up as a failure (Canon lens released for EOS-M be counted by ONE hand after three generations vs Sony's camp littered with full frame ready zeiss and third party lens count by the dozens..)

ANd yes, first gen't auto focus is just like what was mentioned … feel free to check out the tests on youtube…

if you got a lot of red ring Canon big mount lens sitting somewhere in a box and can flock out extra for the adapter unit.. and very good at Manual focus.. then this is a good deal…

else look at Sony, save up for a A7 II or a 5D Mark III

  • It's the same price through JB-Hifi's website should you have a JB Hifi Gift Card to use (or if like me you buy JB Hifi Gift Cards to maximise Frequent Flyer Points).

  • How does it compare to fujifilm x100s? Assuming canon'd get 50mm/1.4 lens through an adapter. Can somebody tell?

    • Haven't used the Fuji but anything through the adapter will be S L O W on the EOS M, so don't expect the same autofocus speeds as on your Canon DSLR.

EOS M has great Canon colours, a usable "exposure simulation" feature out-of-the box (without pressing anytihng to enable it) and a nice responsive touchscreen with good detail. It has poor battery life and slow focus though, even with the native EOS M lenses. It also has not enough fine-grained ISO steps for finer ISO control. No viewfinder either, so in sunlight it may be not ideal though there are some shortcuts to make it somewhat usable by assigning one of the buttons to toggle maximum LCD brightness on and off.

In summary, if you appreciate a smaller 'big sensor' camera with decent build quality and if you appreciate great quality bargain lenses (that would cost hundreds more in any other mount), and if you like to have a nice usable exposure simulation feature & a nice touchscreen then you can try the EOS M. There were better bargains in the past though.

Canon's strength is the quality of their lenses and the EOS M gave us some true bargains. Personally I also like the Canon colours. They 'do it' for me.

      • Thanks, that's helpful

  • Ok, here is my feedback. I have been using this camera for a year at work filming HD training videos. For this price its cheap, IF you can get an adapter. Also from time to time the f2 22mm lens goes on sale for under $100, which is a nice lens. This makes it a great travel camera to hang off your backpack for street photography.

The autofocus is better with the firmware 2 update, but i would go shooting sporting events or wildlife anytime soon. If this camera heads towards the $200 mark ill buy another one.

  • Don't buy another adapter, it comes with this EOS-M body! I've just got it today.
