You can get a 20 pk of AA batteries for $5.99 at woolworths springwood. They're a good brand just can't for the life of me remember which one. That's 30 cents a battery. I don't know if it's a nationwide thing or not but I saw it today at work in a bargain bin near the checkouts. Hope this helps someone.

they are the Eveready red standard batteries (not alkaline, not even heavy duty)

…can get a 20 pk of AA batteries for $5.99…

Are they alkaline batteries, or Carbon/Manganese?
If they are alkaline, that'd be a great price.

    • I'm working tomorrow so I can have a look for you if you'd like but I'm not quite sure at the moment.

      • Don't go out of your way on my account thanks BigoDude.
I'm suspecting though that they'd be non-alkaline types at that price, but I'd love to be wrong…

        • Ok, I don't know if this helps but I checked them out and they're Eveready Heavy Duty. I'm not sure if that's alkaline or not but it does seem like a good deal. They have about 20 packs left.

@bigosmallo: Heavy duty aren't alkaline, but they are… well… poo.

Yeah Big W has their Chevron brand Alkalines at about 40c a battery if you buy the 20 pack, AA or AAA. Super Heavy Duty is even less.

Bunnings currently have packs of 30 VARTA AA's ALKALINES for $8.99. That's 30cents each!

Watch the Varta batteries - I have had them leak on me even when they still had charge left - wiped out one of my LED torches with the corrosion

with the discounted prices of rechargeable batteries I've seen here in the last few days, I don't really see a point in using disposable batteries any more. I'm not a tree huger but think of the environmental benefits.

  • Sadly my camera doesn't want to know about rechargeables, so I'm compelled to use best quality alkalines only. Even then I suspect that it's spitting them out with 80+% charge remaining. I end up with a small pile of batteries that measure 1.49V into an open circuit & are still capable of pushing 2A! At least they end up being consumed in various clocks, torches and remote controllers, so no nett waste…

    • You really need to get a camera with a lithium battery.

      • Yeah, that's the only thing I have to complain about with my little Cannon A590IS. It has a quite stunning feature list for a small point 'n' shoot jobbie, but it does chew the batteries. I'd pondered trying the AA Lithium disposables but always baulk at the cost…

Get a Canon Ixus. You won't regret it. Although I don't know the specs (particularly optical zoom) of the A590IS so not sure an Ixus will have the zoom you want. There is the convenience of cameras that use AA batteries, but the life you get from Lithium manufacturer batteries last ages and recharge quickly. I am not referring to lithium AAs but the rectangular ones made specifically for the camera.

          Just my 2c
