Sennheiser HD800 Over-Ear Headphones

More than 60 years of ingenious headphone engineering has been applied into the new HD 800. Incorporating Sennheiser’s most advanced driver technology, these open, circum-aural dynamic stereo headphones redefine what reference-level audio is all about. You will form an altogether new height of sonic perspective as you experience a high-fidelity natural hearing experience. Do take note that presently, no other manufacturer has been able to come up as close as the HD 800 in replicating the basic acoustic conditions of natural hearing.——-

Matching these headphones' reference-grade audio performance is their striking and visually effective industrial design. Premium parts have gone into their production - the transducer is encased by a precision material made of stainless steel. The earpads are handcrafted from a high-quality microfiber fabric. This material is extremely comfortable to wear and easy to maintain. The headband and headphone mounting utilises the most advanced development from the aerospace industry. In terms of connectivity, these headphones utilise specially-designed, four-wire, high-performance connections with Teflon insulation.

Truly, the HD 800 are a glorious success and have become a pioneer in headphone development.

  • Inb4 "who would spend that much on headphones?!!11 My apple headphones sound fine!."

    • +4

You beat me to it. I understand audiophilia is a passion of sorts but I could never justify spending this much for something like this unless I was in the music or film industry where audio precision was required. Either that or I won the lotto.

Can someone ELI5 what is so special about these legendary headphones? I mean this with all respect.

      • +18

        they sound ok

      • +8

People have preferences on what they hear. It's hard to go back to buying something cheap if you got used to expensive headphones (expensive headphones are generally better). It's like, I used to be able to hear this that and those and they were all clear and seperated with the expensive headphone blah blah blah. Though I am being slightly dodge since even within the expensive headphones, there are different aspects that they excel in and blah.

The saddest part is, HD800 is not even the most expensive headphone (well most expensive one by Sennheiser that's available right now) out there :'(

        • +1

True. Wait til these guys see how much the Hifiman's new flagship model, the HE1000 is going for. Heck, wait til they see the STAX models lol

    • +2

      Anyone on $100,000,000 pa.
      DR Dre maybe?

      • +7

        He'd use beats.

        • +3

…else the royalty payments would be cut off

    • Maybe if I bothered listening to all my music in FLAC with a proper DAC & Amp etc, a very expensive road I probably shouldn't go down.

    • +7

That moment when you realize your car costs less than a pair of headphones! <cries in a corner>

      • +3

If you bought a decent car for less than the cost of these headphones I'd actually call that a win!

        • Old car but running smooth for last 15 months.

  • +4

Perfect accompaniment for $129 Simplehuman 38L Rubbish Bin

  • That's a pretty good price given what it's usually gone for. It's a shame duty'll have to be paid on it.

    • +2

Wait, if you have to pay duty, I'd just fork over the extra for actual after sales support from Headphonic.

      • i bought one from DWI and did not pay the duty since they declared the price around $800

        • Undervaluing can get you into a lot of trouble.

        • they said if there was trouble, they would arrange someone to solve the issues but they neither mentioned about undervaluing the headphones or how they could solve issues when i emailed them
only realized the declared price on postage slip once its delivered

        • @xxxfbsxxx: You are technically trying to avoid tax by undervaluing. If you don't get caught, there is no problem. I've heard someone getting into trouble from other vendor with tablets from abroad, I think you'd at least need to pay more than the tax you had to pay. Though since I've never had experienced that (I've never bought anything over $1,000 from abroad in Australia), I don't know.

        • @AznMitch: i actually emailed them about the duty and they said that i would not need to pay for tax but did not mention about undervaluing
at that time i thought they would import the headphones and then sent it from their local warehouse :|

      • I hope head phonic have improved in that area. I bought a faulty pair of headphones from them years ago, and they were an absolute nightmare to work with.

        • I've only ever had to exchange something once with them many years ago and it was as smooth as you could want really. The only RMA expirience I've had that was better was MS when the support agent seemed eager to get my RMA through.

  • The bass is a bit weak on this.

    • +4

They're not meant to be bass heavy. The are meant to be transparent and sound exactly as the music was produced. If the bass is weak ina given song it's because the song was produced with weak bass.

If you want to colour the sound you can use a graphic equaliser.

  • Ozpimpmybargain?

  • I am nowhere near to seeing the value on these.

    • +9

If you cannot see the value in the headphone, you are not up for it.
It's one of the top end headphones that's readily available to public (as in, we can get it from Australia at least), so even within the people who are audiophiles, I think it's going into the region of "too expensive".

Something like HD800 usually requires a proper amp, a proper DAC, proper source materials which would cost more than the headphone itself. So unless you are far into the hobby, I think it'd cost a lot to get everything on one go. HDVD800 for example, an amp/dac combo made by Sennheiser for HD800, costs over $2,000 and you need to buy a power cable as well. We haven't even started talking about studio recordings.

  • +2

I wouldn't call it legendary, especially since Sennheiser's legendary headphone usually refers to Orpheus.

Nice price, but tax would probably make the price close to the Austrailan stocks' price.

    • +3

Sadly the Orpheus isn't available anymore. I was lucky enough to have a listen to it and it was very dreamy.

      • +2

I never had the chance to. Though, I think I am partially glad that I've never had a go at it.
At least my dream can stay within the regions of products that are available :(

        • +1

Yeah, once you've heard fantastic it's hard to listen to "pleb" level again.

Mind you, The HD 650's aren't bad and relatively easy to drive and sound great.

        • +1

@Frig: I have HD600, so I think HD650 wouldn't worth the upgrade. Not saying that HD650 is bad though, it's just that my HD600 still has fair bit of life in it.

        • The 600's are excellent too. I know someone who has taken the foam padding out to get more high end out of them. They're not harsh either. Some would say the 600's are better than the 650's.

  • +1

will this sound good for iggy azalea?

    • +4

maybe that's the trick to understanding a word she says when she raps

    • +1

      They seem quite fancy

    • +1

If you want me to be completely honest, it probably will if the recording is good.
I use my HD600 to listen to Ariana Grande and other pop songs sometimes.

  • +4

The kick is that anyone in the market for something like this likely doesnt have to worry about a bargain :-P

  • +3

How about the $969 headphone cable to go with it from Addicted to Audio!
    http://www.addictedtoaudio.com.au/product/effect-audio-thor-…

  • +9

People spend more than this regularly on camera and lenses, so I don't see what the fuss is. If ur into ur music, these can be a good investment.

    • +1

People are spending this much on a smart watch that needs to be charged every day…
I wish people would spend more on good audio equipment.

  • +3

    will Officeworks pricematch this??

  • In terms of connectivity, these headphones utilise specially-designed, four-wire, high-performance connections with Teflon insulation.

    Interesting, no lighting adaptor hey?

  • Wow…this will go well with my $10,000 Apple Watch :X

  • +1

Id rather get Audeze LCD 2 or Hifiman in this price range.

    • +1

Or the Audeze EL-8 for entry level. Maybe even the LCD-X?

  • Sennheiser. >bargain. Pick one

  • +1

I learnt a valuable lesson when I auditioned a pair of these before buying them as I really didn't like the sound.

They sounded extremely thin to my ears. At the time I owned HD600 and thought they were god's gift to headphones so I expected the HD800 to simply be a more refined version of what I already had. I also owned AKG 701, Alessandro MS-1, Sony MDR 7506, Koss KSC 75.

Saved myself a lot of money by not buying these, especially since I would have bought an expensive DAC to "make the most of it".

Tastes vary. It turns out I much prefer orthodynamic / magneplanar sound so I ended up getting some custom modded Fostex T50RPs that I was very happy with.

    • I like my KSC-75 :) Just out of curiousity, have you done any mods to it?

      • +1

I decided I liked them better/brighter without the foam covers, so I removed them a long time ago. Didn't know you could mod them, to be honest! I need a new pair, they keep falling off the ear-hangers now that the plastic is wearing down.

        • Some people drill more holes into it, some uses PX200 pads etc. Kramer mod? I remember that being mentioned several times, I never tried since I am fairly content with how they sound.
I tried the PX200 pad, immediately regretted it (Makes it sound so muffled).

I simply use the headband from PortaPro (makes them tad bit more comfortable).

If you look for a deal on KSC-75, Amazon has them cheapest as far as I remember.
I wanted to post it as a deal, but it has been at that price for 5~6 months already.

  • Think I'll buy 2 …. wife and me!

    • +1

Be very careful! You should not gift her something that costs more than the Ring you gave her. ;)

      • Pmsl …. very good :-))

  • Damn, this headphone looks badass…. so is the price!
