JB Hi-Fi refuse to price match

Went in 10 mins before closing time

Plan was to walk in, grab an Amiibo, price match, pay and leave

Wanted to match Kmart for $15 (17 at JB)

Was told by the guy behind the counter "we don't do price matches" l

UPDATE: The Charizard Bikie Gang will be raiding the store tommorrow to get me an Amiibo for $15.

I've price matched a Wii U bundle at JB HIFI. The one I went to (Bankstown) had a flyer/notice at the entertainment service desk which says they do price match and their terms and conditions for it.

Doncaster store in Vic also has a price match policy poster up

  • +26

They don't actually have a price match policy.

    • -1

Out the front next to their name is a very big sign that says 'lowest prices'. That leaves me to believe that if I go there to shop I will get the 'lowest price' which to me means they will price match another store selling the same item.
      Otherwise it's a little misleading.

Misleading yes, but it's not a price-patching policy.

JB Hi-Fi admits breaking its 'Always Cheapest Prices' promise

You should read the first comment on that post…

          Hi Ruslan/Kogan,

I contacted Kogan on 24/04/2013 and my conversation reference number is: QZF-515-62684. I contacted regarding a price matching enquiry and received a reply from David stating:

“At this present time we do not price-match. It is likely our prices will change in the near future in accordance with the market's best current prices”

I notice on the right hand side of this page you have an advertising slogan that states “Best prices on technology. World wide.” If I use your mobile site and search for a product it also pops up advertising “Loading the web’s best deals & prices on consumer electronics…”

This is false advertising. I found the best delivered price in Australia for an exact same model camera, lense and cf card that you had advertised. I provided you with the prices. You would not match them.

I now call on Kogan to remove your slogan, “Best prices on technology. World wide” and “Loading the web’s best deals & prices on consumer electronics…” from all advertising material, and to replace it with something honest. How can Kogan, in good faith, claim to always offer the best prices, when Kogan has acknowledged that cheaper prices are available elsewhere right now?

Stop pretending to offer ‘Best Prices’ be more honest in your branding, and be more honest with the Australian people.

Australians have had enough broken promises.

          You see what I did there?… It’s funny because they’re your words….

          Nobody likes a hypocrite

        • Next door to this jb hi fi is a chemist warehouse, at least they are polite enough to put 'is this' in tiny font in front of 'Australia's largest chemist', maybe I could suggest to jb they write in tiny font 'sometimes' just before the ' lowest prices' sign?

        • +2

          @Jackson:

Yep. Pot. Kettle. Black. Totally destroys any credibility Kogan may have thought it had!

        • So it's either a pricematch policy or mass report them to TIO or whatever to make them take that down.

        • @dealman:

The reply from Kogan is good too and relevant to this discussion.

          KoganTeam Mod > Stephen Muldoon

Hi Stephen, across the store, we do offer the best prices on the latest tech. You can head here for more info - http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2…

We'll always work hard to secure the best possible price on every item on Kogan.com. We don't price match but our price changes are usually in one direction (down!).

So just remember that, Kogan doesn't price match either.

        • @DarwinBoy:
That is also misleading in my opinion

      • +1

I'm from Darwin too and I avoid going to that JB if I can.

I much greatly prefer the customer service from The Good Guys at Homemaker Village who now know me and will drop the price for me before I even ask, I can still drop it even further by asking again (they know I will).

The JB Hifi in Berrimah always give excuses as to why they cannot price match but they will drop the price by $2 if you ask nicely..

      • +1

yes, you are 100% correct. Not sure why u get negged, esp on a bargain site.

JB saying "always lowest prices" is dishonest at best.

It is mainly aimed at cattle. Humans that have a brain can see through the BS.

    • +1

They don't actually have a price match policy.

Exactly this. It's up to their discretion if they want to price match but they are under no obligation.

  • +1

As previously stated, they don't have an official price matching policy. Even if they did, the effort involved in calling the store, checking the price and availability etc. Just pay the $2

    • +22

No, don't just pay it, shop at the competitor who gave you the actual best price. Let the market sort everyone else out

      • My nearest Kmart is over 10km away, for the sake of $2 you just pay the advertised price

        • +3

So they're not a local competitor if by your own admission the nearest store is too far away.

  • +8

Same thing happen to me, so I just walk out and went to the other store instead.

    • I walked out of Big W and JB price matched it…

      • Didn't know JB sold Big W's

        • I wanted to buy a Chromecast at the discounted price at Big W, but was a day late…

Went to JB Hifi and they price matched it…

Then a few days later, used the JB Hifi receipt and bought 2 more…

Then a few weeks later, used the same JB Hifi receipt and bought 1 more…

Then i went to the US and they wouldn't price match australian prices… :S

  • +37

Seriously $2?? A price match sounds like a waste of their time and yours. Just do the sensible thing and purchase from the store with the lower price.

      • +7

That's a reason why they don't have to pricematch. If you can't be bothered to go to Kmart then why should they be bothered to pricematch? Don't they only pricematch if it's in the same centre, like EB?

      • +21

If you came into my work, and asked me to do something that potentially could take me a bit of time 10 min before we close, I'd deny you too..

        • +6

@bargin193232222: because they know it will sell so they don't even need to change the price

        • +2

@bargin193232222: Why couldn't you not be lazy and just drive to Kmart?

        • Where do you work? You can't be bothered to serve me. So I'll make sure I can't be bothered to visit your store. We'll both be happier…at least till you're out of a job. I bet you'll whine about online retail making it untenable.

We've gone from businesses always doing their best to serve the customer or else staff out on ear to just plain lazy. I can shop at 1am in my underwear online and pay less. If you don't want to go out of your way to provide service, why should I come into your store?

        • +4

          @syousef:

Wouldn't call a multi billion dollar company "My Store" and when I do not get paid for a minute overtime, like hell would I be staying back any more than I have to just for you to save $2…
Also Like I care about online retail, that won't effect my job. You are making assumptions when you don't even know where I work

        • @samboread:

I'm not the owner where I work either. I only get overtime under specific circumstances but I do have to do plenty unpaid. If I demonstrated your attitude I'd keep my job for about 30 seconds. No sympathy.

        • @syousef:

Good thing I don't work where you do lol! ;)

  • +18

I would feel embarrassed asking to price match something to save $2.

    • +2

there are 40 odd amiibo that are already overpriced at $15 and still more to come
      x $2

      • -8

I thought they would just say ok and give it to me for $15.

        • +1

Each store must have their own policy. I've had stores say yes they do price match, no questions asked and others that have said they only price match stores nearby (but never had any that have outright said no). Sounds like it's discretionary. On the other hand you may have just got someone that didn't want to help or doesn't know what the policy is.

        • I thought they would just say ok and give it to me for $15.

You don't set the prices… the store does. You pay their price or go to Kmart.

    • +10

I would feel embarrassed asking to price match something to save $2

you have to risk it to get the biscuit… do you even ozbargain bro?

    • +1

I dont think the OP was that concerned about the amount so much as the technicality of potential false advertising.

If you are a business intending to advertise your competitiveness by allowing the statement "We will not be beaten on price!" and then not honouring that statement with a rubbish excuse like why would you even ask to price match $2, its a likely breach of consumer law based on "baiting"

    • Are you sure you belong on ozbargain? ;-)

  • +1

I would buy from Kmart in preference to JB as they have a better return policy for starters. If I find an item cheaper at another store I will generally buy from them in preference to a store who price matches as they are not out to overcharge in the first place. The exception is when I find it cheaper online, I will try and get a store to price match as its always nicer to buy and have something now that wait a week for it to be posted and the hassle of trying to return something when it is posted is a pain.

  • +4

    first line says it all

"Went in 10 mins before closing time"

I would have said sorry we aint jbhifi, we are macdonalds, we only sell burgers!

    • Would you like fries with that?

  • +8

I was with my daughter the other day in JB and she had decided on some headphones. They were $229 and Good Guys had them for $228. I told her to ask the guy and after playing with his PDA she got them for $220. It's always worth asking.

    • Yep, they will almost always take something off the price of bigger ticket items if you ask.

      • +1

It depends on which salesperson you get and how they are feeling that day. The variation between how much individual sales people will negotiate is crazy.

        • Your attitude helps as well, if you act genuine and decent and build some rapport with the salesperson they're far more likely to do you a deal than if you're argumentative and demanding…as the OP seems to have been ;)

  • +34

The problem is when you go to a store operated by people who have a date planned after work, looking forward to closing the doors a few mins early so they can knock off and slam down a hard earned, they are not very interested in making a time consuming sale.

Go into the store at 9am, no one else in store and they are waiting for customers and see if ur luck has changed.

This is nothing against JB, just a fact of human nature and life.

    • +3

      Completely agree there

    • could be someone who has to pick up kids from childcare!
did you know some places charge you by the minute you are late!
      its crazy!

  • +4

"Go into the store at 9am, no one else in store and they are waiting for customers and see if ur luck has changed."

    Works well in Asia - first sale of the day is lucky, I have had some huge discounts being first one in. (;

    • I've also gone to markets being the last person, and even if I want to buy lots of stuff, the store holder just wants to shut up and go home to family. Underestandable, and lessons in human nature were taught to me in Asia :)

      • +2

I have also been into a store in Asia late, and they tell me they have had a slow day. They gave me huge discounts, much better than neighbouring stores would.

      • That strategy may work well in China, but in Vietnam it depends on the types of store that you visit. If it is an electronics or non-consumable store then you'll probably be treated the same regardless the time you visit the store. Rarely do they treat you as God if you come as the first customer of the day. However, if you pay a late visit to a fresh produce store then the chance you get crazy discounts is much higher because the store owners just don't want to keep those soon-to-spoil stuff longer than necessary. They want to get rid of the old stuff and invest money in new produce everyday.

BTW, if you travel to any other countries you should try to learn some basic phrases in those languages. That way, you are less likely to be ripped off because local people may think that you know about their sale tricks. You'll be ripped off anyway because you're tourists but it never hurts trying to bargain. We Vietnamese LOVE to bargain!

I understand that charging more is the way local people earn a living but charging tourists too much is unethical and unacceptable. $2 for a glass of iced tea?! You can drink 17 glasses or even more with that amount of money.

        Cheers!

        • +2

Troi Oi, pay for Tra Da? Never ever have I paid for it, always free even at the likes of Trung Nguyen's

        • +1

@Davros: Trời ơi, you know Tiếng Việt?! Congrats, you're a serious traveler then. Many other tourists don't even know that they can get free stuff when purchasing other products. Coffee stores do offer free, unlimited "trà đá" (iced tea) as long as you order "cà-phê" (coffee) from them. They mainly benefit from selling coffee (and cigarettes) while homemade iced tea costs them almost nothing. I used to work in a restaurant for foreign tourists and we did charge them $2 per glass or $4 per jar of iced tea. I feel sorry for them but that's where my salary comes from ;)

        • @721411: Free trà đá only happens in Saigon bro, dream on if you are in Ha Noi

        • +1

@dtrang: Thanks for the heads up though I am fully aware about that. I grew up in Dong Nai and went to uni in HCMC. However, I've never had a chance to travel to the North. It was my father and my brother who suffered from the cultural shock as they visited Hanoi and surrounding places 2 years ago. It's properly a cultural thing that differs between parts of VN just like any other country in the world.

However, it's better not to discuss it here. Too much off-topic.

          Cheers!

    • just came back from vietnam. yep first sale in the morning too. i ask how much is the t-shirt. they said "if i tell you, you have to buy it because it is considered un-lucky if you don't buy it"….i slowly walk away….wtf????

      • That's totally BS, isn't it?! I hope you didn't get to see the store owners or sale assistants give you a cold stare or burn incense and ghost money behind your back. Lol!

BTW, are you a VNese who lives overseas? Your avatar shows as a VNese actor.

      • Was the proprietor's name Dr Evil? He would have asked for $1 MEEEEllion but revised it to $1 BEEEELION.

      • Yeah in Vietnam they take the first sale of they day very seriously. If you are the first customer and don't buy their stuff they curse you for the rest of the day! Next time offer them a price that you think is reasonable, if they don't sell then it's their faults not yours.

  • +5

    I think the issue was

Went in 10 mins before closing time

    Says it all…

Everyone probably wanted to go home, the guy probably couldn't be stuffed calling his manager to get a price match approval and then Kmart to check that was indeed the price…

JB do price matching. Next time go in at 9am

  • +4

I have found the stores in CBD are quite competitive, they don't really "price match" but they do certainly negotiate. In many occasions I was offered better prices by simply asking.

It won't work if you are after the rock bottom price, or demand price matches that don't make money. But if you ask politely, they usually work something out saving you the trouble of running around.

  • I went to my local jb hi-fi, I ask a guy who has one of those scanner things what I'm looking for, without even asking for a discount I usually score a 10% discount anyway, probably the jb hi-fi you are going to

  • If you're a true ozbargai er you'd get a lift with a mate out to the Kmart in question and purchase it from their on your AMEX card for triple points. True ozbargainers don't shop at JB HiFi due to their ridiculous credit card purchasing policy.

    • What is this credit card policy u speak of?

Is it related to the aldi policy of charging people without notice in store?

      • No, just that you have to pay a surcharge for using any credit card.

  • I don't understand how they can advertise "Always cheapest prices" yet refuse to price match. Is it just me, or is this false advertising?

    • They're notorious for bargaining/haggling, they literally never show you the cheapest price on the ticket…

    • +1

Cheap as chips better watch out, some of their items are way more expensive than chips! So misleading it must be illegal cough

  • I usually track down a person on the shop floor when I seek a price match at JB. They're always keen to assist. The people behind the counter just scan, bag and receive yo money.

  • I tried to price match a razor mouse at JB to MSY and they were like "No way, definitely not"

    • Why don't you just buy from MSY?

      • they ran out at the time

        • a condition of price match is the retailer you are price matching against are 'in stock'.

        • @STE: You don't need to let them know that it's out of stock in the other stores ;)

  • Working in a retailer with no price match policy, I'd personally price match if you made it easy for me, i.e. bring in a current ad or recent receipt. Not going to ring or web search to verify prices, especially not for a $2 difference.

  • +8

I work in retail and people like you are the worse kind of the day. You had 8 hrs to come in and get what you want but you decide to show up 10 mins before the store closes then have a sook about not saving $2.
Heck i always price match if someone politely asks and never have a problem i don't even bother checking the site unless it sounds ridiculous.

    • -2

Hey, I asked politely and they wouldnt do it.

      • +5

Unfortunately not everyone is nice and usually the case is cause you came that late and they didn't give it to you just to spite you i guess

I woulda gave it to you just to get you out faster lol

        • -2

That was what I thought would happen.

        • I wonder what would happen if I showed them a picture.

        • @bargin193232222:
Who knows really depends on the store and who you were asking. You couldve had bad luck and ran into someone that already had bad day

And like everyone says go early in the morning on a weekday if possible you usuelly get what you want with no hassles

        • @jno: didn't look like it
