JB Hi-Fi refuse to price match

Went in 10 mins before closing time

Plan was to walk in, grab an Amiibo, price match, pay and leave

Wanted to match Kmart for $15 (17 at JB)

Was told by the guy behind the counter "we don't do price matches" l

UPDATE: The Charizard Bikie Gang will be raiding the store tommorrow to get me an Amiibo for $15.

Yeah cause god forbid people with real jobs working 9-6 to find that the place they're giving money to is acting like a scumbag.

Please, tell me where you work so I avoid your great company.

      • Me?

      • Hey i never treated anyone with disrespect and i do suck it up and keep my thoughts to myself during work and treat customers fairly figured i could be a little honest on here but guess not and like i said if it was me i would've gave it to him/her with no hassles just to get it over and done with and no time was mentioned…it could've been 9-9 or even the weekend.

i might've sounded like a bit of a d*ck in my first comment but whatever you're the one sounding like the douch now really "real jobs" good one mate

        • i understand, probably just the way you made it sound…

        • So you can be honest but I can't give you an honest opinion on your work ethics?

You don't sound like a duck, you are one mate.

    • +5

i mean this in the most respectful way. Without customers your business is F'ed. People dont come in 10mins before the store closes to spite you, its part of the job. If you dont like it, dont work in retail.

I used to work for a computer store, and the last 30 minutes is always the most hectic. However i never complain that people come in sometimes 2 minutes before the doors close. Comes part of the job, just gotta suck it up sometimes.

      • Hey i totally get it just thought i could actually be honest that's all

    • +2

Suck it up. When I worked retail people would come in 5 minutes before closing, still gave them the same service as I would the first person.

      • …and THAT is how you at least attempt to compete against online retail! Well done.

    • I worked in retail and salespeople like you are the worst.

You would really bend that low not to serve a customer with integrity because they came in to your store WHILE IT WAS OPEN??

You are paid to work there during opening hours.

10mins before you close or not - a customer is a customer and you should treat them accordingly.

If $2 is such a small amount to "sook" over - then it should be even easier for you to match it.

$2 to a customer is worth a lot more than $2 to a store. At the same time OP has other reasons such as travel to Kmart to want to price match.

    • I'll come pay you a visit, where about do you work? ;)

    • @jno

Maybe people are busy during other times? You poor thing having to work during open hours. It's these types of attitude that makes me not give a **** about retail stores closing down (due to online competition)

  • +3

The sales person didn't have a heart, $2 is a lot of pocket money for some kids.

  • I got jb to knock off 3 dollars off a charge hr just to price match dse. And they did it.

  • +11

i really hate price matching. i would rather support the store that is selling it cheaper

    • +3

me too. support the shop that was doing the deal to start with.

  • JB Narre Warren & Camberwell are never happy when price matching and always let me know about it. But they always end up doing it.

  • My JB experiences… In both instances I had vouchers from JB so that is why I didn't want to purchase from original cheaper store

Wanted apple tv, asked what cheapest price was (ticket said $109), he told me $107- was cheapest possible price. I told him officeworks had it for $99 - he then said 'yep that's fine then' and matched it for $99

Wanted ipad (the $1000 one), asked her to price match officeworks for $999, she said they don't discount ipads at all (I was seriously asking for less than 2% discount). Went to another jb and he matched the $999 price straight away

I don't think JB have a clue what they are doing, just want to get as much as possible out of you

    • There was a period of time where iPads weren't allowed to be price matched - as far as I understand, it was based upon prices given by Apple directly, as the prices had been deliberately driven down to increase market saturation.

The only products that I've ever refused to price match are iPads - everything else, I can either do straight away, or if it's significantly cheaper, after manager's approval. I'm just an employee, though, and I'm not sure what other stores' managers do.

    • +1

You tried to price match to save $1 and when they didn't you went to another JB? Is your time worth that little?

      • Ipad was $1020 originally

10 min drive to save $20 is worth my time

  • +1

I have some giftcards for JB and I want to use them up but everytime I am able to get the item cheaper elsewhere (even at harvey norman!) and they have never matched only some midway point at best and some BS about that is the lowest possible price. 3-4 years back totally different story, they would always match or beat a price (often times just using the PDA give me a better price than I was after anyway!). So times have changed for the worse.

  • +2

what the hell? ONLY $2 difference?? @@

    • +1

Multiply than by the number of Amiibo's and then come back. We don't know if the OP is collecting them or not. If he or she can get a free Amiibo every 8th one he or she is ahead.

  • +4

Why do we always get threads like this?

Just buy it from the retailer that's offering you a good price. If it's some obscure retailer located in some other state, then fine, but this is Kmart, like freaking Kmart and you want to price match? JB don't even have a price match policy.

You think their advertising is misleading? Well take them to court or file a report, what are we going to do about it? You're just having a whinge because you're not getting your way.

    • +8

      Hey Mr. Paulsterio -

Having worked at a JB I can tell you right now - Policy or not they do price match and managers do talk about it. If it's an advertised price - salespeople are allowed to lose money on the product.

OP's problem was that he went to the counter.

The counter people are not sales people. They don't know what they can and can't match.

Either way - OP has a valid reason not to go to Kmart - it's too far away.

Why do we always get threads like this?

      It's simple really.

Person A goes to a store and talks to Salesman A. Salesman A gives them an awesome deal matching and sometimes even beating prices from another competitor.

Person A tells person B "Hey I got this mad deal at this store"

Person B goes to a store possibly the same one or sometimes in a different area and talks to Salesman B. Salesman B refuses to do what Salesman A does even with proof.

      So where is the consistency?

Why is price matching such a grey area?

Just because YOU don't care and it's not worth YOUR time doesn't mean there is no issue here.

People post up great deals they got direct from a salesman and then you get threads on OzBargain filled with "I managed to get it here they matched." And someone else will post "I tried this store and they wouldn't match"

Why does this happen? It shouldn't be a lucky dip. It should be clarified.

      • +2

        So where is the consistency?

There needs to be no consistency. JB does not have a price matching policy, which means whether they price match or not is up to their discretion, if you don't like it, why not take them to court rather than complaining on the internet to a group of people who can't do much about it?

Why is price matching such a grey area?

Because retailers don't really want you to price match, so they purposefully make it a grey area, it's not that hard to understand. Buy it at the store which offers the lowest price and you'll generally be much happier with the experience.

Just because YOU don't care and it's not worth YOUR time doesn't mean there is no issue here.

No, there is no issue. JB does not have a price match policy. They price match sometimes, that's great, but they don't have to price match always and there's no "rule" which says they have to. Nobody is doing anything wrong.

Why does this happen? It shouldn't be a lucky dip. It should be clarified.

Buy it from Kmart, if it's advertised at $15, then it won't be a lucky dip.

        • So what you're saying is - they don't have to give reasons or clarify anything because they're not breaking any laws / rules?

I don't disagree that they don't NEED to clarify and show consistency.

But I think they SHOULD do it. I'm not saying they should be FORCED to do it. I'm not saying they are breaking the law either.

There's a right way to do business and a wrong way to do business (morally)

All I'm saying is - if they do price match (sometimes or all the time policy or not) - they should make the process clear to the customer as a gesture of integrity and customer focused business practices.

As for shopping at Kmart - OP lives too far away.

Going to another store won't change original stores methods. The idea that "voting with your wallet" is going to all of a sudden show them that because of their loss of revenue they should change is ridiculous. No-one will be able to put 2 and 2 together that the ultimate reason for their loss of revenue due to people shopping elsewhere is because of reasons X, Y or Z unless those reasons are addressed directly.

          This doesn't solve the problem.

        • @Michegianni:

So what you're saying is - they don't have to give reasons or clarify anything because they're not breaking any laws / rules?

It is already clear, they don't have a price match policy. Most stores don't have a price match policy. If you can get a price match, then just consider yourself lucky.

There's a right way to do business and a wrong way to do business (morally)

Yes, and the right way to do business is to support the retailer that gives you the best prices, right?

All I'm saying is - if they do price match (sometimes or all the time policy or not) - they should make the process clear to the customer as a gesture of integrity and customer focused business practices.

As I have said, it's already clear that they don't have a price match policy, do you go into Target and demand they price match Big W?

Going to another store won't change original stores methods. The idea that "voting with your wallet" is going to all of a sudden show them that because of their loss of revenue they should change is ridiculous. No-one will be able to put 2 and 2 together that the ultimate reason for their loss of revenue due to people shopping elsewhere is because of reasons X, Y or Z unless those reasons are addressed directly.

Just shop at the store that gives you the best prices, I don't see why it's so complicated. It sounds like some people just prefer dicking around and wasting their time than just getting what they need at the cheapest price.

Let's look at this another way. OP lives 10km away from Kmart. Let's assume that OP lives around 3km away from JB. He went to JB and back to no avail, that's 6km of travel, so Kmart and back is only 14km more. 14km takes around 15 mins.

I bet OP's wasted more than 15 mins mucking around with JB, posting here, making a fuss and complaining. This is what doesn't make sense to me - if he had just went to Kmart and bought the damn thing, he'd be playing with it now rather than whinging.

  • +3

Threads like this just make me want the ACCC to ban all price match policies (from puffery to "guarantees") so that retailers & customers can stop quibbling and focus on giving better deals in the first place.

    First world problems

    • *poorblems

  • Dick Smith Victoria had an opening Managers Special on Seagate 1TB HDD, $29.00. DS at Hollywood, SA, did a price match no problem. The listed price was $79.00 and they took a $50 hit. I asked for the price match expecting them to say no, bur was totally surprised when they agreed. {Note: Found out about the Vic special on Ozbargain.)

  • If you really like 'price matching', you should go Sydney or Melbourne house auctions every weekend!

  • I can confirm this, I have asked them to price match before and they declined (rather rudely) even though I brought up that their door says "Always cheapest prices". But checking out their Terms I couldn't find anything that says they have to price match :( But they usually don't price match because of a large price difference, they don't usually decline for something like $2.

  • If you really loved Ninty you would be happy to pay whatever they ask for an Amiibo. I swear it's cause of people like you that the WiiU is failing. What if in a few years time Ninty goes the way of Atari and Sega then you will have more to cry about then a measly $2 more on Jigglypuff.

  • I see some weird irony here, I walked into jb with my $10 coke rewards voucher to buy a $12 kids dvd, I went to pay and the guy at the counter (after scanning my voucher) said "I'll just mark it down to $10 for you mate".

  • On another note, I had to Google "Amiibo".
Well, you learn something new everyday!

  • JB price matched my TV. In fact, they beat the competitors price by $1.

  • They say no price match, but I usually refer back to their ad that says they won't be beaten on price.

  • I was trying to buy a web cam last week, which was $24 in most shops here, but $48 at JB Hifi. They refused, rather rudely, to decrease the price even a little, so I price matched at Officeworks instead who were much nice and had no problem with that.

Next time I'll just skip JB Hifi and go to the other shops instead. :)

  • Which amiibo were you after?
The employees probably knew how well they sell (as this was posted on the release of wave 4)

  • One time i went into woolies and asked for a carton of cigarette either 8pack or 10pack(200 cigarette). The lady working over the counter told me it was illegal to buy a carton of cigarette which shocked me! Then i showed her a receipt to prove that i always buy a carton rather than just a single pack, she was still insisting it was illegal(Here i mean by the law) :/ Then i called the store manager and he have no idea about this and he still claimed it was illegal! Then i called woolies headquarter and told them about the story and they were shocked about what the store manager and the women told me, the store manager and the women end up calling me and saying they are sorry and they will make sure this will never happen again. Moral of the story; some worker dont have any idea about the company policy and local law, if you end up with stupid or lazy or new or raciest worker just call their customer service and most likely they will make sure this will never happen again as they hired the worker to make money not to lose money.

  • i went into jb at Macarthur Place in Brisbane and asked if they could price match a Belkin 8-Outlet Surge Protector, Umart had it at $69 and JB had it at $99.

the lady behind the counter said she was more than happy to price match and she called the manager over, i showed the manager the umart website and he said no that's a fake website you made it up so no price match. i thought you @#$%^&*(

  • I agree for the most part about coming in at the last second. I used to be store manager for a Pizza Hut, we used to close at 11 and you don't know what a pain it is to get a delivery at 10:59. I would have to take everything back out, then make it, wait for it to cook, deliver it and dependant on where it was to, I might get back to the store at 12ish or later. I as an employee hated that, it was an hour or more of unpaid work for my boss to make $3 on a $20 order. I never let it show to customer but trust me there were some words said in the shop to the other person on.

  • Went to target, saw a particular game that i was after with a few copies left (about 5), went to JB and they said they call up target to confirm, target said that they dont have any stock left. So that was about 20mins in between, did JB just stop trying on serving customer who are in for a price beat or target just happens to display empty boxes?

On the way out of the center i drop by EB is test my luck, EB same we'll match it only :(
