Just FYI Office 2016 for Mac and Windows is coming in a few months.

I used to be a person who doesn't like subscription based services, but Office 365 for 5 users is around $90 street price per year, and you get to install on 5 computers + 60 Skype Minutes per month + Unlimited OneDrive space. But the best bit you get free upgrades to the latest version so install 2013 version now and upgrade automatically to 2016 for free.

If you are a student it even better, as most universities offer Office 365 for free.

    Check here http://products.office.com/en-us/student

    • I agree with @landroverz7.

Beat my post by 40 seconds, and yours contains much better information.

    • $90/year is good value if you have multiple users.

If you have one user it's quite expensive.

And that's only if you care about having the latest version. If you're currently running 2007 or 2010 you're not really missing out on anything.

I'm still using Office 2003 and it's still doing just fine.

      • If you have one user it's quite expensive.

        sub-lease them…

Fight the "software rental" schemes as much as possible.

Once everone is using it, there is nothing to stop the price being jacked up.

Look at it this way: Microsoft (or any other big company) isn't going to offer you a new option that's better for YOU in the long run. Guess who it's better for?

    • I agree but at this price you can also go & get office works to price match with a further 5% off.

  • Office 2016 is due later this year for those who are wondering why this is on sale.

my friend tells me - he's an Ibm Dude, tells me that MS Windows 10 soon to be released [ early May ] will be free for all users for the first year as an upgrade , maybe Microsoft office will follow the same regime.

I am not certain but he reckons MS wants to tackle Apple by making Windows 10 open source so maybe they will do the same for office..

Microsoft will never open-source windows. Reasons:
      - they instantly lose all of their user "lock-in" capability
      - if it becomes open-source, who will pay MS for a copy, when it can be compiled for free. How will MS make money?
      - during a lawsuit between MS and the US government (about the time Vista was being delayed), when the US govt were rather annoyed that the bridge on their battleships was run with a version of MS windows, but running poorly, a US military person asked the VP of MS to release the source code. The MS VP famously said words to the effect of "We know of over ten thousand unpatched vulnerabilities in the Windows code - do you really want us to release that, with the risk it will get into the hands of hackers?"

Because windows existed before the internet (as we know it) existed, it has lousy security. Every time MS tried to improve it, it broke lots of third-party programs, so they wrote lots of work-arounds into windows, so the more important programs would still work. This is horribly complex of course, and hackers still find ways to get into the system, which is why we STILL get loads of patches on a regular basis. Releasing the source code would make life really easy for hackers, probably to the extent that huge quantities of new computer viruses would appear, likely causing the collapse of the internet.

YMMV but I have had great success using http://reddit.com/r/microsoftsoftwareswap/ (especially if not a student)

    ~$US30 for Office 2013 pro

Personally have purchased Office for Mac and a Win 8.1 Pro N keys with no trouble activating etc.

    • HI,

Thanks for the link but the s/w mentioned in the website are they legit ??
and can it be resold ??

This is the first time I have seen this hence the question.

      thanks mate

      • No real way (that I know of) to fully validate a key apart from trying to activate it.

The terms associated with the keys are not listed apart from the sellers stating that they are 'retail keys'

As stated in my first word, 'your mileage may vary'. I havent had any issues, nor have many (any?) others. This is not to say that no-one will never have issues though!

The good thing about reddit is that anyone can post any issues without direct retribution or removal, so if there was issues i'm sure there would be people complaining etc

  • If your are a student with a valid edu address, you can get office 365 for free.

    • No, IMO: You get your first one free.

Is there any guarantee that next year's Office 365 will be free?

  • My Q is:

    • Do Office 2013 &/or 2016 formats change…?

Ie, are there any Technical reasons to buy eitherof them?

    Next Q:

    • Is there any other good reason to buy Office 2013 or 2016?

…ie, due to some significant improvement(s)?

    • compared to what? are you asking about upgrading over an open source office suite, an old office 2003??

  • Is this Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013 - Three user version?
