Why does Mario party have scathing reviews? Is it bad?
Most people approach it from a gamer's game point of view. It's a casual party game and is intended for little children. And for that purpose, it's a great game! But if you're a competitive gamer who takes pleasure in smashing your fellow human beings, then this game is dissapointing.
Its different than the previous mario party. Instead of each playing moving individually, now all players are sitting in one car and each player's dice move the car. You can move up to 24 steps from dice only in one turn.
For what it's worth, a quick search of metacritic shows that none of the titles have hit 80 on the site. This ones sitting at 66 in a series that ranges from 57 to 79 over ten titles.
What I'd take away from that is the game's not great, but in general the series has never received glowing reviews so it's not like this title is substantially worse (on averaged scores anyway). Still, a lot of people have liked past titles and I think this one has it's place too. Certainly we enjoy playing it with our five year old, and he in particular enjoys it.
I think whether the game is any good or not will depend on who you are playing it with, and whether you're happy for end results to get randomly skewed by late game redistribution of points that makes skilful wins in earlier rounds largely redundant at times.
