TP-LINK 150Mbps Wireless N ADSL2+ Modem Router ($27.84 - Officeworks)

141

This modem, is on clearance from Officeworks for $27.84 AUD, along with it's 300Mbps couple, TP-LINK 300Mbps Wireless N USB ADSL2+ Modem Router for $58.56 AUD.

My modem died on me so I needed a cheap but reliable alternative. Read couple of reviews for this and watched some Youtube unboxing and ranking and it seems reasonable or even quite good in some people's opinion. I have had a TP-LINK modem in the past and I was quite happy with the frequent firmware release for an extended time and the quality. So I hope this will follow the same.

  • I dno about you fellas but all these modems without a fan always fail for me. zero air flow reduces internet speeds to zilch :| maybe im doing something wrong (no its not hidden in a blanket or tucked away in a book shelf. but yeh, have had a few fail like that: i now use a usb fan to cool my modem which is plugged into the modem :P Win

    • No, you're right actually. Especially if you're in QLD or in general 30+ temp. I used to put mine on the carpet in the corner of a room we don't use and it started resetting itself in some hot days until I pulled a little trick and put it on a ceramic dish which was more rigid and cool giving the holes on the bottom of the modem a little bit of breathing room. And at the end of the day a little PC fan won't cost you more than couple of dollars from ebay and increase the flow which I did't need to.

      • When it gets uncomfortably hot I've resorted to propping it on a couple of clothes pegs or something similar - make sure vent holes aren't covered! Another option was to lean it at an angle against the wall on a carpeted floor.

Idea is to allow easy flow of air and also keep hot surface of modem/router a distance from another surface so heat can't build up.

zero air flow reduces internet speeds to zilch

Slows? That would be an extremely odd failure mode.
It should either work, or not work. How can it slow down from heat??
Some sort of thermal clock throttling? Even if that were true, it should not affect your speed. More likely you have a gazillion torrent connections, and your router is out of memory?

My TP Link 8960N has been running 24 / 7 in an unairconditioned room in Cairns, downloading truck loads of torrents wirelessly, for about 5 years ( i can't remember exactly how long, but at least 5 years).

          : )

I dno about you fellas but all these modems without a fan always fail for me.

You mean virtually all of them?

zero air flow reduces internet speeds to zilch

Your kooky, wive's tale theory about how heat affects your Internet speed is nonsense. I'd suggest buying a better (read: not sub-$50 dollar) modem/router.

  • No model? dodge officeworks website….

      Catalogue Number: TPW8951ND

      Therefore I assume it's the TP-Link TP-W8951ND.

      • It certainly is

    • thanks for the reminder. Updated the post

    • The catalogue number happens to be the model if you couldn't work it out

      TD-W8951ND
      TD-W8968

      Edit: beaten

  • i bought the 300mbps tp link from wireless 1 45 dollars free shipping, all the time not on sale

    • haven't done a price comparison on a 300mbps model but the 150Mbps one that I picked up is 35 ish on eBay coming a long trip from China. Seen couple of 32s as well I think but not 27 from the shop next door.

    • You can also buy W8968 from MSY for their regular price of $48 (if you can't buy from Wireless 1). Try pricematching with Officeworks.

Once again, where is it in stock?

    • -1

If not on stock, do Click&Collect and they will ship one to the store in 5 days that you can pick.

      • +1

        Click & Collect
Not available to Click & Collect

        • Might be different for other stores. I only have checked for couple of Officeworks on two cities.

  • Mine seems alright after a couple of years,
not as fast as my old Billion 7804VGO, but far better wifi strength and seems pretty stable

  • Would it be ok to use this as modem only in bridge mode and connect it to a Netgear Nighthawk?

    • Don't see why not. Then you'll get the best of both worlds. This one has 4 LAN ports that can do the job to bridge the traffic I'd say.

      • +1

Hmmm, dont think this has a broadcom chip. Need one with broadcom as I'm quite far from the exchange. Still a good buy tho

    No stock available..

    • Agree. Another Officeworks clearance product with no stock available anywhere. Either click & collect or in store.

I wish people would stop posting these clearence deals unless they can provide evidence of available stock.

      • +1

I myself purchased one, and it shows available for Click&Collect in 2 other Officeworks close by. It's a deal and it's "clearance" so no guaranty for everybody to get it.
It's posted here with a good will and hoping that if somebody needs one get's lucky and gets it for a good price. :)

        • At least mention which store. Clearly says Unavailable Online and not available for click & collect.

        • +1

@g12345567: The link provided is suppose to be dialled on the store which shows availability for Click & Collect and Deliver to Door.

          As requested

However, I personally think it doesn't make sense to mention such thing as there is a very few chance so many people will be from the same place when you can change your store and find it out for your own location. :)

  • Does It work with NBN?

    • No NBN coverage for me till 2016 so never researched what type of modem would be good for NBN but the minimum requirement is to have a modem with a WAN port which clearly this model doesn't. Let's see what others say.

    • +1

      TD-W8968 is NBN ready.

      • You're right. Damn :(. I wish I went with that one myself then I would have NBN ready one when ever they will knock my door.

  • +1

Very good basic modem, nice find OP

    • you're more than welcome. That's what I was looking for myself. A basic good modem :)

  • +1

I've been using the 300Mbps model and am very happy with it, and thats coming from an IT snob. Would definitely recommend

  • Cannot order..please help =(

    • What's wrong. would you explain :)

      • cannot order online eventhough you said to change stores and pick up in store..it says unavailable online.

        • It might not be available for the store you're looking for. Can you tell us the post code and suburb. I'll check it for you and make sure that's the problem. As prople commented, some stores don't have it available in any form.

        • can you tell me any store in melbourne that has a stock?

        • @angelkulit025: Sorry my friend. It seems they don't have it available in on any form including Click & Collect in Melbourne region. I have checked most of them and no luck. They must have ran out of stock in their warehouse. Even my local store, ran out of stock just then.

  • when i use tvpad it freezes at times when playing back old series so would this modem help that?

  • Pretty sure I bought the 8968 from MSY for about $40 18 months ago…
Current price is $48 so no deal for me on this one.. Negging solely to highlight this point for others.

MSY don't seem to stock the 8951ND, but the 8950N is stocked at $34.
