5.5%+ off Flights through Flight Centre (Using 10% Flight Centre Gift Cards @ Woolworths)

100

With Woolworths selling Flight Centre Gift Cards for 10% off and charging a 5% card issuing fee, we're able to purchase Flight Centre Gift Cards this week for 5.5% off (5.5% off is explained below).

Key points:

  • They sell $75 and $150 denominations (plus a stupid 5% "card issuing fee")
  • 12 months expiry
  • The Gift Card number is not obvious. It is the first 20 digits located below the scratch-panel.
  • There is an interesting point on the fine print of the Gift Card saying "The store is not obliged to accept use of this card on any transaction under $20". Not sure what this means.
  • Their call centre is open 24/7
  • This deal is probably only worth it if you know you are going to booking for sure in the next 12 months, and if you can use their lowest price guarantee (to avoid Flight Centre's own booking fee + get a $1 off).
  • You can price beat as long as it comes up in their search engine, and you've found it cheaper on an eligible competing website
  • Could be worthwhile for beating some flight prices from IWantThatFlight, byojet. I would recommend Matrix Search, Kayak, or Google Flights (prices shown in USD) to search for fares.
  • Cannot be combined with Jetstar Price Beat Guarantee (i.e. no double price beating) because the price itself is not advertised.
  • Random perk (or con depending on what you think): if you have any dramas with your flight (e.g. cancellation, delay, lost luggage), Flight Centre can act on your behalf (to an extent) to assist you, provided Flight Centre have a relationship with the airline. Notable airlines without a relationship are: Tiger Airways, Scoot, AirAsia

Tabulated breakdown. 5% often refers to either MEBank/Citibank PayPass transactions, or purchasing WISH Gift Cards at 5% off. 7.5% off would most likely have to refer to the Big W WISH Gift Cards:

Gift Card Value Card Issuing Fee Price w/o Discount Price w/ 10% off Price w/ 10% off & 5% off Price w/ 10% off & 7.5% off
$75 $3.75 $78.75 $70.88 $67.33 $62.56
$150 $7.50 $157.50 $141.75 $134.66 $131.12

Given the above, there is no incentive to buy either denomination (except maybe the $150 one to save $0.01).

  • Is this a deal ? Should be in forums

I think the deal is just a clarification that 10% off gift cards @ Woolworths is actually 5.5% off Flight Centre Gift Cards.

For people who use Flight Centre then it can be a saving. However, I've tried price matching eligible flights with Flight Centre and they simply refuse - multiple times. Search Whirlpool and AFF - they are a joke of a travel agent… but then again probably all bricks & mortar travel agents are the same. In my opinion, if you're not booking airfares online then for sure have paid too much.

      • I always able to do pricebeat with flight centre.
        read their t&C http://www.flightcentre.com.au/lowest-airfare-guarantee

you need to show them which web, include all the cost, then they beat by $1 and you have to pay in full when they do price beat, you can't book and place deposit only. again read their t&c http://www.flightcentre.com.au/lowest-airfare-guarantee-faqs

        • I understand the terms of the pricebeat. I have tried, like others on OzBargain, to show them a cheaper price and they simply refuse to pricebeat. Straight up refusals. Multiple times. I've even reported it to head office and still had no luck. They price beat only what they can, not every flight they are presented with.

Some of my friends and family who are less online-savvy have received pricebeats from Flight Centre and in those instances when I've checked online I was able to easily beat those prices. For example only last week my brother-in-law got Flight Centre to pricebeat flights SYD—>LAX return. He gave them a price of $1,813 to beat. They beat it by $1. He was happy and his flights were booked. I then checked for him what price I could get the same flights for and he could have bought them for $980.

I guess some people aren't as internet savvy and that is when Flight Centre will pricebeat. Otherwise if they can't beat it then they simply refuse.

        • @PBG:

I have to say my experience was different and it was interesting.

          Scoot were selling SYD-SIN for $169 (seat only), $203 (seat + 20kg baggage), $216 (seat + 20kg baggage + food).
I got them to price beat this and got the fare for $215.
Adding on all the discounts above, you could say the price I got it for was potentially as low as $187.94 ($215 * 1.05 * 0.9 * 0.925), or as high as $224 (not paying with gift cards, hence $9 credit card surcharge).

Either way, it was a price beat for what was an incredible price already.

        • @illumination: Hmmm interesting. So what is the discrepancy? Why can some get a pricebeat and others are refused? I typically fly Virgin & Qantas/Jetstar (domestic and international) and I wonder if the no commission stance on these has something to do with it?

        • @PBG: very interesting if they don't do the price beat. i remember their t&c was beat it or fly for free.
what they normally play with me is if i sent them email, then they told me the seat wasn't available anymore.
I m guessing they can booked all those seats class with those cheaper rate code.
I normally visit their store with the printed price and i told them straight, i want this flight i got this price from this xxx web with this final price, i want them check in front of me, which is normally they did then they have no choice just price beat.

In the past I have very good consultant, just called her, told her the web, then she asked my cc, deal done, 1 hr later i got my e-ticket. Since she left, I have to visit their store :)

        • @PBG: Don't know the answer that I'm afraid. This is my first time trying price beat with Flight Centre. I'm almost 100% certain they didn't get any commission for it either, because I was told that Scoot have only started appearing in their searches very recently and that "they don't appear on their (internal) system".
I also know that all my consultant did was go onto the Scoot website, pay for the fare using what I assume would be a company credit card, and charged me on behalf of Flight Centre. The reason for this method of booking was because "Flight Centre do not have a relationship with Scoot".

If I was rejected and as far as I could see it satisfied all conditions, I would ask to speak to someone senior for an explanation and ask which condition it does NOT meet. I know you said your query went through to head office, but I wonder if you were given an explanation.

        • @illumination: > I wonder if you were given an explanation

Not really. I was fobbed off basically saying it was at the discretion of the franchise. After the head office calls I was just sick of Flight Centre and gave up. This was towards then end of 2013/start of 2014. Maybe they've changed their attitude since then?

        • @PBG: wow, i was hopping many times they refuse me for price beat so i can get free flight :)
in the past they gave me $20 voucher instead of the current offer $1 price beat.

have you show them their t&c mate?

        • @joannatan:

have you show them their t&c mate?

At the franchise, yes. Head Office I was on the phone so just spoke to someone and tried to explain to them.

Damn, I feel like I missed out now!

        • @PBG: you should go at different shop

    Can't see how's this a deal.

  • In response to the two comments above, my view is:

    • This was posted in the weekly catalog post last week for Woolies which I wasn't able to find, otherwise I would have linked to that
    • Even if I was able to find that, we are allowed to post individual items from the catalog provided it's not listed in the title of the bargain
    • This is not really a bargain of a particular flight or airline, but can be used (potentially) for any future flight deals posted here that you could possibly find chaeper on a flight search aggregator such as Kayak or Google Flights. The main "criteria" is that Flight Centre themselves must be selling flights with the airline and ideally, sell it for more expensive than a competitor site that you can price beat with.

It was mentioned as 10% selected gift cards, but you just made it clear to just be 5.5% off instead?

      • No. Just to give it its own deal so it is more readily searchable/accessible. Also to highlight the more "fine" stuff of the deal. It was really just a line in that deal and I thought I'd expand on it.

All this…. Is this worth the stress specially when you under holiday mode !!

    • +2

Haha probably not if you think it is stressful.. but some people get a kick out of this kind of stuff. As if it's not fun getting a good deal for an already good airfare!

  • Hi,
I am interested to explore this and trying to tabulate it.
OP said "plus a stupid 5% "card issuing fee"

That would be issued per card so my calculations are
    $75 * 5% = $3.75 card issuing fee
    $75 with 10% discount = $67.50 discounted gift card
    Total paid for $75 card = $71.25
    = 5% discount

Can someone check my figures please

    • The card issuing fee is added prior to the 10% discount. That's why it ultimately becomes 5.5% off.

In pure percentages, it goes like this:

      100% + 5% = 105%
      10% of 105% = 10.5%
      105% - 10.5% = 94.5%
      i.e. 5.5% off

      Quite manual/time consuming.

Be aware IF you need to change / cancel your flight booked with FC.
You need to pay the following IN ADDITION to airline fees.

Changes to Domestic/Trans-Tasman bookings will incur a fee of $30 per passenger per booking in addition to supplier fees.
Cancellations to Domestic/Trans-Tasman bookings will incur a fee of $50 per passenger per booking in addition to supplier fees.
Changes to International bookings (excluding Trans-Tasman bookings) will incur a fee of $75 per passenger per booking in addition to supplier fees.
Cancellations to International bookings (excluding Trans-Tasman bookings) will incur a fee of $180 per passenger per booking in addition to supplier fees.

    • You can deal directly with the supplier to avoid FC fees and manage the booking directly

      • +1

The airliner can't touch the ticket if ticket issued by travel agent and travel hasn't commenced.

        • I did not know that. I was told the fee is if you want them to assist in cancelling or changing your booking. If not you can deal yourself with the airline. And that made sense…

  • Definitely a deal in my books.

In essence a 12.5875% saving on Flight Centre bookings (with EB etc 7.5% off)

Thanks for the trouble of the calculations…was going to do this myself…..AND didn't realise about the card issuing fee, negates some value but still a good deal. Cheers OP
