$18! What have you got to lose?
(except the environment, as I'll buy a new printer rather than replace ink cartridges).

    • It would've been $11 if the welcome $5 voucher still existed.

I'd ask everyone to PLEASE not send printers to landfills simply because of the ink. Most start with 1/2 full tanks to begin with. If you print using "draft" or "economy" mode, etc…the ink goes a very long way.

Please don't use excuses to pollute. You aren't saving that much, & you're all causing an exponential impact on our planet.

You should direct your appeals to the manufacturers and retailers who's business models make a new printer less than half the price of a new cartridge. They are pulling the price levers, the market simply responds.
Me, I refill my own but many would not bother at this price point.

I most certainly do write to the makers, don't worry about that.

But the end users cannot claim innocence as in "two wrongs make a right"….don't even go there. If the units are left on shelves, then the makers will change. If the end user buys & dumps, the maker makes more. Not shifting blame- there's plenty for everyone who participates.

        • This starts and stops with price point.
You will find some consumers who agree with you views and actually boycott buying cheap printers, but so few that boycotting cheap printers will never make a tangible difference. You might as well have a chat with the sea about stopping the tide.
It starts and stops with price point. The manufacturers and retailers could end this practice tomorrow by setting realistically higher prices for the printers. People wont throw them away then.
Here's a general rule of thumb that works: people are selfish and short sighted. If printers are $18 and cartridges are $35, they will buy the printers. Simple as that. Its all price-point.

        • @King Tightarse:

The shifting of blame really doesn't work. Saying the makers should charge more for the printer does not absolve a person of after-the-fact dumping of a non-degradeable printer into a landfill.

As a responsible end-user (short of complete boycott/non-use of) printers: you buy, you replace printer ink, you recycle the cartridge. Whether you try generic is up to the user. And yes- if the majority wrote letters & boycotted this practice, things might change.

But to suggest it's the maker's fault that a user decides to buy, then dump a fully-functioning printer into a landfill because inks are dear is ridiculous.
          Imho

  • Please— please!

Do not excuse yourself & dump printers into landfills! You buy it, you support it— OR you contact the maker for THEIR pick-up of bad units.

    Don't dump your printer!

    Print>choose printer>quality (ALWAYS CHOOSE DRAFT)> print.
