  • dicksmith accepting woolworth gift card payment?

    • -1

Dont thinks so , WW sold DSE few years ago

      • WISH gift cards are still accepted online not sure about in store. Interestingly you can still buy the Dick Smith branded WISH gift cards at WW/BigW they usually hide them bottom of the rack haha

      • Any wish gift card works in dick Smith online as well as in store with the exception of egiftcard.

        • Ahh , local DSE turned my Wish card away last year citing separate companies. I pointed out their logo on the back but no go.

I stand corrected though if they are still accepted, my local DSE are a bunch of pricks anyway.

        • Last I used wish gift card in Dick smith store was in December 2014 when I bought my LG G3. It was from dick smith Malvern in Victoria. After that I did use it online on dick smith website few times.

I bought one of these for a similar price from The Good Guys a couple of weeks ago (Ozbargain posted deal here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/191235).

A few notes that might help prospective buyers:
    - The RAM is DDR3L 2GB (note the L for low voltage). I replaced it with a DDR3L 8GB SODIMM ($90) which improved general performance a lot.
    - Keyboard is pretty good
    - Trackpad is OK but not great (especially the left/right mouse button placement under the pad). Will probably get used to it. Nowhere near as good as a macbook trackpad.
    - Build quality is quite good. Much better than the previous Toshiba C850 my wife had.
    - CPU is fine for general web browsing and office work, even captures 1080 video from my capture device without issue.
    - Display is good for front on viewing, viewing at an angle isn't good.
    - There is no DVD-ROM drive (but who needs one, I use USB keys)
    - Be aware with the Cashback that you have 14 days to complete the online submission and get the paperwork through to Acer. They did respond once they received mine to confirm that my cashback is processing.

All up a very good laptop for the price, better with a small investment on RAM. Perfectly fine for my primary school kids.

I bought the Quad Core version on Wednesday for Mother's Day present. $261 after cashback
      https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/laptops/acer/ace…

I opened it up to check whether I can upgrade the RAM and perhaps utilise the empty DVD slot.

There seems to be a SATA connection there. I'm going to upgrade the RAM and put in a SSD. Hope it makes it fly.

Do you know if the empty DVD slot works? I want put the original HDD there for storage.

Is it worth the extra $12 for the quad core(I'm guessing yes).

I want a cheap laptop for watching Netflix etc, this seems like it would be fine for that(Maybe with a RAM upgrade)

        • The Quad core should be slightly better, but probably minimal.

          @Kuro:

Can't say performance difference between the CPUs is minimal:

-Celeron N2940 has more than 45% better 3DMark06 CPU score than N2840 (2,191 vs 1,510)
-Celeron N2940 has more than 80% better Passmark score than N2840 score (1,830 vs 1,003 - test clearly favoured more core)

So for $12 or about 5% more price you get significant performance gain from N2940 CPU or Acer ES1-411-C1WD model.

        • There you go, glad I got the Quad Core then! Its for my mum, all she does it watch media, and basic surfing.

Definitely telcast from my opinion, I am using it from last two months. It's going superb.

      • Is there a recommended place to buy these from? I hadn't heard of it before, sounds interesting…

Check out my post on the Teclast x89. Should give you some background on Teclast products. I'm loving mine. Using it with a Keyboard case. It's a full PC with the size of an iPad mini.

I was able to marathon 5 40-45 minute episodes on Netflix. I had batter from 88% to 4%.

  • Does this come with full windows which can be used with software or just the cut down apps thing?

Windows Rt is dead. You get full Windows 8.1

      • Thanks just bought one, looks a decent price for a cheap laptop.
