Microsoft Lumia 640 $179 (Locked to Optus, 3 Months Netflix) - $80 to Unlock

410

Saw that Optus have started selling the Lumia 640 for $179 prepaid which is pretty cheap even if you need to pay an additional $80 to unlock the phone (within first 6 months, $25 after 6 months).
Has the same internals as the Lumia 735 (Snapdragon 400, 1gb ram, 720 resolution) but slightly bigger screen (5" vs 4.7").
Camera is 8 megapixels (6.7 on the 735).
Phone costs $299 ay Harvey Norman and $293 from the Good Guys.

  • Honestly couldn't you just buy a 920 for ~150 on gumtree 2nd hand, slightly smaller but get the better camera
All these models from last year are so confusing

    • Couldn't agree more. The 920 even had wireless charging.
Not sure what MS is doing since the Nokia acquisition, but the higher model numbers do not dictate a better phone than the previous ones all round.

      • +5

In what universe is 920 a lower number than 640? Its a flagship vs the mass market version, of course its not comparable.

This replaces the 630 and 635. If you want a better 920, buy a 930 or 940 in a couple of months (if rumor holds true and its the flagship win 10 device).

      • +2

        Definitely go 640

        1. 128 G SD card
        2. much much better battery time
        3. 4GX network support
        4. On par performance
        5. Glance

The only benifit for 920 is OLED display, but not a must

        • 920 does NOT have an OLED display, and it DOES have glance, also I found the battery to be on par with the S4, better than iPhone 5, I owned all the above phones

Inbuilt wireless charging was also a huge benefit

        • +2

@marchi: ah, then maybe 920 has a bit better camera? And yes the onboard storage is better, but you can install app on sd card anyway.

At $179, 640 really cannot be beaten by any budget phone including Moto G 2, which can be found around $250 around. It only supports 3G and has problems after Lollipop update.

        • @belrose: I found the camera was amazing, some photos just had that feeling of a DLSR, no other phone I have owned took such impressive pictures but it also took some duds at times

Bad points where no Chrome and was rather heavy and bulky

        • The 640 doesn't have band 28

        • -1

@belrose: provided you use optus. If you need another network then the zenfone 2 looks way better.

        • +2

          @marchi:
No Chrome, but it will have Microsoft Edge (aka Project Spartan) when upgraded to Win 10

        • +4

@Ronnnie: From the linked optus website:

          4G NetworkBand 1 (2100 MHz), Band 2 (1900 MHz), Band 3 (1800 MHz), Band 4 (1700/2100 MHz), Band 5 (850MHz), Band 7 (2600 MHz), Band 8 (900MHz), Band 12 (700 MHz), Band 17 (700MHz), Band 20 (800MHz), Band 28 (700 MHz), TDD-LTE: 38, 40

        • @Ronnnie: From the paper, Zenfone 2 looks better. But from Zenfone forum the battery life is terrible. Also the price is much higher than $179, and it is from ebay or other grey import, vs 640 local stock

        • @belrose:

Yeah you are indeed correct, microsoft even has it listed in their specs. GSM doesn't, which is where I looked. :)

          @belrose:

It's not $179 if you don't use optus. It'll be $240 vs $279 if you get the Viet unlocked model off eBay. The Zenfone 2 battery issues seems to be with the 4gb version, the 2gb model seems to get around 5 hours ost. The intel chip performs at around the s800 level or better, and the camera does better in low light than most other phones. And you have better app store, each to their own, but it's a consideration over the 640 unlocked version.

      640 has
      better battery
      larger screen
      quad core
you can add micro sd card up to 128GB
      newer bluetooth
update to win 10 by carrier
      2 year warranty
Optus Chaddie had one on display
      great phone for this price

      • +1

Snapdragon 400 vs Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960, core number doesn't necessarily mean it's better.
WP 10 is guaranteed on any lumias out there right now, to a degree (I think 520s get a butchered version because of the spec) (In fact, my lumia 925 was on WP 10 TP for awhile)

Though everything other than this, I sorta agree. Btw even though Optus has it in their display, they don't provide Optus app for WP.

The comparison is really unfair, since 640 is a budget line from this gen (the 1st digit is the position, 2nd digit is generation and 3rd digit is for variant of the series, I believe) and 920 is a flagship line from 2 gen ago (though I think 920s still hold fairly well, in terms of performance at least).

        • Used vs new. May as well say pick up a used 930 or 1520 and have a wp flagship for a little bit extra.

        • @Ronnnie: He was comparing those two in terms of spec, so I simply corrected his errors. Though, yeah, 930 or 1520 probably would be better if you don't mind getting a second hand phone since they are far ahead in terms of spec. Also, other than what I've mentioned, I did say that I sorta agree.

        • @Ronnnie:
On a 930 on ebay you will pay double that
for a used phone and no warranty
          better specs agree

        • @costas60:

eBay isn't the only place to pick up used phones.

And you stilll have microsoft warranty if it local model, as that covers the phone for 2 years.

  • Might replace the last iPhone in the house, a 4S, with that… Using a 735 myself and really like it.

    *months

  • have read somewhere Optus has the unlocked version for $240

    • That is correct, $240 for the unlocked version with a bluetooth speaker included.

      • Do you have a link to this please?

  • How does this fare with Virgin Mobile given they use Optus networks?

    • Amaysim also?

  • +1

    not a dual sim :(

    • a lot of $1000 phones
Iphone 6 galaxy S6 not dual sim
so not sure it is a handycap on a $179 phone

      • +1

no aus networks offer dual sim at this stage but ALDI, yet dual sim is the way to go, as it prevents telco monopoly
even apple secretly want dual sim by aiming to push its AppleSim that capable of holding multi telco data on a single sim card, eliminating the need for SIm cards at all

If possible I want Tripple Sim, cause i have sims of All major networks.

        • +1

How can that be worth it from a cost perspective? If you are gonna recharge or post pay 3 SIM cards you'll may as well just get an unlimited calling SIM which can be had for around $30 to $40 a month now.

        • +1

          @simmomelb:

if you had Five sims at the price of less than one of those 50 dollar plans today, which would u do?

  • Have been using Virgin sim at the moment
on 2 Optus unlocked phones No problem
I think they are network locked not carrier locked

  • Just be aware, Optus do not provide an app for Windows Phone. You need to track your usage by other means. The data sense does its job very well and you could use the web interface, but I think it's worth putting it out there.

    • +1

If you're prepaid a free txt to 9999 will return all your balances. I find it no less convienient than an app

      • I have moved to Android since my brother's phone was not being used (+ my phone has that yellow tint right now). I at least prefer having the app support, as it's easier in many regards. You can see the balance on your home as a widget (Data Sense does similar but 1. Doesn't show balance on calls 2. It's different from how Optus keeps track of it, so there is a chance of differences). I think I couldn't make the payment on my phone when I started to be on this postpaid plan as the web interface for me was very clunky, as in, Optus was constantly signing me off as soon as I log on etc etc.

I think it's one of those things that you sort of take as granted on other OSs, but not really there for Windows Phone. Everyone assumes that Optus app would be there for a product that is locked for Optus.
I have to admit that data sense is better than the one that my Android phone has, but, I get the official Optus app which gives me the info I need.

  • Silly question…. will this phone work with Vaya as it uses OPtus network?

    Cheers

    • +1

      yes it should
as I said above network locked not carrier locked

      • +1

Can I assume this will work with Jeennee too?

  • Usually, after 6 months I've had Optus locked phones unlocked at no charge (as I have more than $80 credit) or even before that period is up (if the Optus unlock site says this is not locked Optus device & I have to send the IMEI via a firm to Ootus for them to request a unlocking code from the manufacturer).

The front facer on the 640 is only about 1MP compared to 5MP.

    • +1

According to their website the unlock after 6 months is $25.

  • Just bought one of these for $179, popped my Virgin SIM in, works perfectly, what a beautiful phone for the price.

  • Will I regret getting a windows phone? Broke my android :( using an iPhone atm, blech

    • +2

Definitely worth a try, for their price, they do more than what you would expect from other OS. Just be aware that there are a lot of apps that you would not have on Windows Phone (that you might use or need, i.e. Snapchat, bank apps, google apps (though they do have a third party apps for them) etc etc), and some of the functions that you would use might not be available as well (i.e Accessories like miband, etc to other functions)

I made a move from Windows Phone to Android, because it was not being used and my old phone was getting a yellow tint on the screen. To be honest, both systems both have their pros and cons, so it's really up to you. There are definitely a lack of apps on WP, support on those are usually poor as well as WP is not a mainstream OS. That being said, barring that, Windows Phone is an alright choice imo.

      • Ended up getting S3 from KMart that was posted here about a week ago. I was using Note 2 before, it's kinda a relief not having the S-Pen anymore cause I'm free to muck around with custom roms. Miss the pen though…

        • I think the S3 deal was amazing… I was almost tempted to get that and give my gf S4 active :(

  • Hi, anyone having the phone with optus prepaid sim tried the hotspot yet? I wonder if Optus blocks hotspot on windows Lumia phones just like iPhones on prepaid?

    Thanks!

    • I have an unlocked Lumia 735 on Optus prepaid and can create a hot spot. Hope this helps.

  • Once Windows 10 is released, most apps will be available in Windows Phone. I am waiting for Lumia 940 to arrive later this year.

    • +2

As much as I hope that'd happen, (and how much I think it's possible), it's not guarenteed. Windows 10 Mobile (or whatever name they are going with) apparently made it easier for app developers to move from other OS to Windows by making the codes reusuable, doesn't necessarily mean that they will make that move.

As I said, it's more than likely, but not guaranteed.

      • Android apps won't run on the system the way people think. However, the code can be run through a Microsoft system that will effectively "convert" most of it for use on Windows phone. There will still be development involved in porting, however it won't be as much as it once was.

        • +1

I think it's for the best, since if they did what Blackberry did, 1. it would've been awful since Android apps would run through a virtual machine, meaning that it will require serious processing power for them to be fluent (which is absent on WP). 2. it would kill off what's already almost dead WP app market (Why make a WP app, when you can get away with making an Android app).

        • @AznMitch: My feelings exactly. However, if a dev can do a port with as little effort/resources as possible, then why not? I feel this is a very, very smart move by Microsoft.

Thing is with apps these days, there is SO MUCH shovelware!!! I used a small handful of apps on Android, and have found versions of most on Windows Phone.

        • @IHateFrasierCrane: I think the problem with WP apps is, shovelware + not enough official apps from banks and apps that people actually use like Snapchat, miband, or even Optus apps.

  • Bought this phone today! Fantastic and so much better than the Galaxy S2

  • Will this prepaid phone work with Vaya sim (Optus reseller sim). Have anyone try yet?

    • I am in the same boat. I currently have a vaya sim and so I went into Optus shop today to ask the question would it work. The sales person advised that it wouldn't work without unlocking. I asked if he was 100% sure it wouldn't work and his reply was that I could spend the $179 and find out! I ended up calling the optus call centre and was put through to pre paid phones and they advised that only Optus sim cards will work with the phone without having to unlock.

    • I bought a Optus Prepaid S3 from house of KMart yesterday and put my Amaysim sim card in it and it worked no problem.

  • Just bought one. Put a Virgin sim in it, no problems. Nice phone

    • Does that mean that the phone is unlocked ?
