Actually works in Aus on all networks?

    • is this magical enough though?

  • -2

    Gaming phone, the new soundbar.

    • +2

I don't think it's such a dumb idea, mind you, i never used one current gen gaming phone.

Thermals can be rather bad on most phone when at sustained loads, they were never meant to be used like that, same goes for form factor. In fact, Sony had one many moons ago called xperia play, end before smartphones were even invented, Nokia had the n-gage.

Not mainstream, but has their niche

      • +4

gaming phones are good if you play FPS games, I love my ROG 6 for CODM, the capacative touch buttons help greatly with being mapped to firing/ADS. sucks for just about everything else though.

        • +2

i play codm on my ipad pro with a controller and it definitely feels like im cheating.

          • +1

@Laserface: Yeh on screen controls are horrible, I play with a PS4 controller and smash everyone lol

            • @itsmoe: does it not get boring if you're constantly winning tho? i feel like i would get bored

              • @SkyeMG: I used to play warzone but I think it's discontinued now. So I stop playing but I didn't win all the time because there were other players that were using controller as well.

I'm a keyboard and mouse type is guy so not really that good on controller but it's still 100 times better than on screen controls.

      • bruh i feel like you need a gaming phone's cooling and battery to use android auto wireless that shit kills my current phone

        • Yeh I still using wireless, I'm using wired Android auto.

      • Hell, my Pixel couldn't keep up being a hotpsot for just 1 computer!

    • +1

Like a "gaming chair" or "gaming desk".

      • +5

You'd be surprised. Android chips like this (SD8 Gen 3) are actually pretty good for low to mid range emulation.

This sort of chip is capable of comfortably playing everything from N64 to Switch and can even do some PS3 emulation depending on the game and the drivers available.

The only issue is the phone form factor, which when compared to traditional handheld console style devices, isn't very good at managing the heat higher end gaming can generate.

        • -5

Yeah, but it's not a "gaming phone" it's a phone with high specs.

          • +10

@PainToad: What do you think a gaming pc is?

            • +4

              @oranglama:

What do you think a gaming pc is?

A powerful PC, often in a tacky case and RGB lights.

          • +3

@PainToad: "Yeah, but it's not a "sports car" it's a car with high specs"

            • -2

@BinaryPirate: I've always found linking "sports" with motor racing ridiculous. It's like calling darts and pool sports or calling a jockey an athlete.

Sure, it involves a skill, but it's not a sport.

              "e-sports" is the worst.

              • +4

@PainToad: If that was intended as a retort, I cannot continue with this delightful exchange.

I will not engage in any battle of wits with an opponent who is unarmed.

              • @PainToad: Can you please share your definition of what constitutes a 'sport'? Genuinely curious. Based on your comment I'm assuming you're under the impression motor racing isn't physically exerting, and the exertion is what constitutes a sport. But I'd love to hear your thoughts!

                • -2

@jakmon777: It requires certain level of fitness to be able to do it. But the fitness level isn't the deciding factor for success.

The same as being able to play pool requires a certain amount of mobility. Yet someone extremely unfit with a lot of skill could still beat an actual athlete.

In my mind something is a sport when fitness is the primary deciding factor for success.

                  • @PainToad: spoken like someone who has literally & demonstrably nfi what he's talking about… though I'm sure the F1 drivers will be delighted to know their insane cardio training can be cut out.

p.s If that's what sport is in your mind, you should probably ask for a refund.
Did you remember to keep the receipt?

                    • @BinaryPirate: How about reading what I actually said?

It requires certain level of fitness to be able to do it. But the fitness level isn't the deciding factor for success.

They need a certain amount of strength and stamina to be able to last the race. But ultimately what decides a race is 1) The car 2) Their driving ability.

                      • @PainToad: That's a suitably facile perspective. Those days are long gone. Elite-tier cardio & mental stamina have been mandatory since the late-70s.
How many of those you consider to be elite level athletes could ensure 5-6kgs of rapid weight loss in under two hours & still be at the peak of their talents mentally?

You might want to consider broadening your horizons quite a lot.

                • @jakmon777:

Can you please share your definition of what constitutes a 'sport'?

Didn't Hemingway already cover that, the differnce between a sport and a hobby.

His take seems reasonable, which I would think make would make horse racing (being a jokey) a sport but not darts, chess, computer gaming etal

      • What's wrong with gaming chair or gaming desk?

        • They're just normal desks and chairs, just over priced and often ugly.

    • +2

Not quite sure I'm with you on this one. For a couple hundred bucks you can get far superior sound to what you get from the TV speakers.

      • -3

get far superior sound to what you get from the TV speakers.

The point is marketing targeting suckers with buzz words. Most "soundbars" are just cheap shit stereo speakers, that suck compared to a real home theatre setup.

        • +1

The thing that costs substantially less is worse than the thing that costs more?

That doesn't sound right to me.

          • +2

@jakmon777: The point is most people buy 2.0 "soundbars" that are functionally no different to stereo systems from the 90s…yet people think they're special because of marketing. Your average soundbar buyer probably doesn't know how many channels their soundbar has or even what a channel is.

Not a dig at all soundbars, there are some decent ones out there, just the deceptive smoke and mirror marketing.

    • Whats wrong with a sound bar?
Or you just referring to how its named?

    • +1

Emulation. These are pretty good at emulation.

  • +1

Not sure what exactly gaming is here

    • +1

they trying to game the market

  • +8

Warning: Only 2.5 years of security updates remaining and no guarantee of working with Australian network VoLTE

    • +2

the 9 pro works on all australian networks. Not sure if that has changed with the 10 but I got my 9 Pro directly from China.

      • +1

If I'm not mistaken, some phones with all the necessary connectivity have still been blocked from some networks like Telstra or Optus.

I can't remember what post, but someone on OzB commented in another post that they have a few Chinese import phones, many of which support the same connections (including emergency service over lte), and they said that some of them work fine, others are blocked.

So simply checking the network band set does not ensure it will work on all networks.

Someone please let me know if I'm wrong and I'll remove/edit this post.

        • +1

Yup, the telcos lobbied for horrendous legislation that would make them have a legally enforcrable whitelist of phones. Sounds bad for them, but really it just means they can pick and choose what phones they want on their network, and they can block imei's if they detect it's a grey market phone. Rather than make aussie sold phones cheaper, they just decided to ban a random number of aliexpress phones…

However, any phone sold in Australia by an Australian seller must have their phone work on the network 100%. So basically, having an aussie middleman means any phone will work

  • Is it worth waiting for the 10s pro to drop?.
My instinct is that nobody knows but I would love an educated guess.

    • +1

It already has dropped to $1100 but if you are looking at the 10s pro . Id probably wait the 11 pro announcement in three days. It looks really good and may be worth the extra money

  • -2

    "Gaming phone" lololol

  • +2

no headphone jack. Rare for a gaming phone

  • +11

256GB for a "Gaming phone" with no expansion slot falls quite a bit short considering the sizes of native and emulated games that you'd want to run on it. If you are after anything serious mobile "gaming", then at least go for 512GB+ for storage.

    • -4

The vast majority of games this game is going to be capable of playing will run perfectly fine off a 512gb SD card. Unless you're playing certain Steam Games directly through Gamehub or Winlator or whatever, there's not really any need to go for more storage.

      • +6

Except this doesn't have an SD Card slot according to the specs.

        https://www.gsmarena.com/zte_nubia_redmagic_10_air_5g-13797.…

      • +3

Lmao this doesn't have a SD slot, read his comment

      • +1

If you want to do Gamehub/Winlator or anything "recent N!ntendo", even 512GB is not really going to cut it. People putting GTAV on it already takes up 70GB, let alone any other AAA game on it that will range from 30-100GB.

Native new AAA Android games range from 10-40GB in size these days (CoD Mobile, Genshin, Odin Valhalla etc).. You'll burn 256GB (realistically 180GB "free" after the OS, System / boot and GB/GiB differences). It won't go very far unless you only want a couple of games installed at a time.

    • +1

The vast majority of mobile gamers aren't playing emulation.

      • +2

Casual gamers wouldn't "need" a phone like this though. This will be overpowered for someone who is playing Candy Crush or even Clash Royale.. A <$50 Supermarket phone can run those.

With this phone, you'd expect to be playing Mobile versions of PUBG, CoD, Genshin, Fortnite, Elder Scrolls etc etc. All of which will require more than 15-20GB each in storage with monthly updates that bloats it up further.

  • +8

Beware - very good hardware, and shit software. Can confirm this on their recent Astra tablet

    • +4

and to clarify a few examples
      - Poor OS implementation eg. unbound navigation under some settings
      - Screen rotation icons disappear in 0.5 seconds making it impossible to switch manually/easily
      - Poor language translation
      - buggy 'TV or console mode', resolutions dont apply easily and you need to manually do it in random OS sub menus.

Overall fine, but slightly annoying if you are used to more polished OS

  • +18

Everyone here who doesn't understand what a gaming phone is - it's got a huge battery, triggers on the corners and a real cooling system to prevent the phone overheating when under heavy use for extended periods. This is an excellent price for a phone with those specs, even without all the extra unique features.

    • Couldn't have worded it better my self!

  • -2

    9% discount… Ok…

  • +1

for those who don't know, REDMAGIC is a sub-brand of Nubia, which is an affiliate of ZTE

  • looks great, full screen with slim borders.

  • have they finally got a decent camer on these things? I need to replace my ageing oppo find x2 pro.

    • If you're after a camera, go for the z60 ultra or z70 ultra as they use similar chipsets and vapour chambers to the red magic counterparts for their respective years, just without the cooling fan (you get IP ratings instead).

A bit clunky though, my z60 ultra with the latest update has some connectivity issues that often require switching Bluetooth off and on again and manually pairing with devices. This has happened with some earbuds and occasionally Bluetooth pairing to my car.

      • Having used several Sony's and found them to be very fragile, I'm pretty gun-shy to go back.

        • On AliExpress, I managed to find a whole 3d camera glass protector. It's a chunky 3mm thick glass protector that has cutouts for the lenses. Downside is that it can catch some stray lights, upside is the photo quality is good and no risk of camera lens shattering.

  • I ran a ROG phone 3 for a long time. I didn't really do a great deal of gaming, but I appreciated the nice specs/screen and huge battery and it gave me many years of good service. My only problem with this offering is that it doesn't support Esim from the reviews I have seen.

Must have for me now, and seems a little odd it isn't supported in this day and age

    • what was the battery size on that phone?

  • Crazy specs

  • This + controller or steam deck?

    • +2

If you don't want to carry around two devices, get this.

  • Check its IMEI number 86956707xxxxxxx in both Telstra and AMTA checker website.

While telstra says "Ok not blocked",AMTA cannot confirm its comparability only showing "Check" status

Not sure if I would take this risk by getting one and pray for usable in my Vodafone

    • +2

My Nubia z60 ultra (the non gaming phone version) works on Vodafone prepaid so I'd assume it should be fine.

  • +2

Somehow the back of this phone is giving me like Android 9 vibes…

The cameras look small compared to the stoves we have on newer phones Haha.
