    PROS:

    The hard drive itself is constructed very well; it has a very sturdy feeling metal casing that looks very high quality. It is very slim and small in dimensions, roughly the size of a modern smartphone. It also has a neat LED feature that is blue when connected to USB 3.0 ports, and white when connected to USB 2.0 ports. The device draws power from your USB port, so no external power supply is needed. Toshiba also includes a micro USB 3.0 to USB 3.0 cable, so you can immediately plug and play at the high speeds USB 3.0 has to offer.

    Transfer rates with this device are very quick. I'm seeing write speeds of around 120 MB/sec for copy/paste folder backup. I also did a full system backup (about 165GB) in about 25 minutes.

    This device also comes with this cool software called pogoplug. It's normally a $30 software package that allows you to use this hard drive or any hard drive as a cloud storage device that you can access from any other computer/phone/tablet using WiFi or data connection. I haven't messed around with it a lot yet but it seems like a pretty useful program and a neat addition to this product.

    CONS:

    I gave this hard drive a 5 star review because of its great construction, quality, and high speed transfer rates. That being said, the backup software included with this item is pretty terrible. Not only is it painfully slow, but did not allow me to successfully create a full system image backup, which is a very basic feature. Supposedly this software is capable of this, but I was unable to get it to work and tech support has not been able to help me either.

    Of course there are many free backup programs available for personal use, so I ended up finding a new program to use. Now my backups are super quick and very easy to complete.

    Overall, I would highly recommend this portable hard drive. Sure, the software isn't great, but it is very easy to download other great backup programs for free.

    • I dropped it from 600mm height and the HD was gone. Opening the HD it comes from the same factory that makes Samsung and Hitachi HD.

  • I ordered one. I need another one for work. I'm all out of space on all of my HDDs. I hope its a good one. I haven't had a Toshiba HDD before.

  • Will the code ONLY work on this model?
    Does anyone know if the hdd is removable?

  • This is only 1tb, 2tb drives are quite common now. And although this is built well and very slim, it is going to be more expensive and thicker to get 2 of these rather than 1 2tb drive.

    • NOT really, if you want 2tb Slim portable drive
      Go for the Seagate Backup Plus 2TB ($134 after discount)
      Even Slimmer than the toshiba slim drive but still with 2TB, and probably lighter!

      "The surprising thing is that even though Seagate offers this drive in three capacities, all three weigh and measure the same."

      • but its a Seagate

          Seagate are known to make some of the best hard drives

          @Benjamin7711:

          Not definitive but this was compiled from the use of 40000 consumer hard drives:

          https://www.backblaze.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/bl…

          Also the Seagate Expansion series was well known for the click-of-death issue.

          @dazweeja:

          That isn't portable drives.

          Every manufacturer has had high failure rates in particular series of drives, or firmware debacles. It's very hard to know how good a drive is until it's been out for a couple of years.

          Seagate did have some pretty bad screwups, but I've avoided their problem drives and I've only had one very old seagate die as a result. I've lost just as many hitachi, wd and samsung actually.

          If you want to be sure, always buy two drives from different manufacturers and keep a full backup. And check the backup once in a while.

          @unco:

          Worked! Yeah have to use postcode approach. Thanks.

          Anyone know if MacBook TimeMachine works with this?

        • +1

          @freelife: Yes, any HDD does, just use disk utility to format it. MacOS extended. Mine different brands, WD/Seagate, are formatted as "MacOS extended (journaled, encrypted)" which means I also have a password to gain access to the drives when I connect them.

        • @ozf1:

          Using as Time Machine now! I saved all the built in files from the HDD first onto my Mac so I can use them in the future if needed.

        • @freelife: Cheers!

  • Thanks OP monty.melb! Bought a silver 1TB and a black 1TB at Officeworks Chadstone, Vic. $66 each. One will get left at my mother's house as off-site backup. They beat it by 10%, not the usual 5% for some reason. I didn't ask why, didn't want to lose the bonus 5% off if it was a mistake; -)

    • Is it just a case of showing them your checkout on dicksmiths site, with click and collect, for them to beat it?

      • Yes. I got to the checkout with the discount price on my phone at $74 and went into Officeworks. One of the guys did the same on one of their pcs to verify it then I went and bought them. The $74 reduced to $66 each. It has "Price Guarantee -$7.40" on the docket.

    • +2

      You got lucky, OW shouldn't be price matching with coupon codes.

      • Yep, they weren't sure so they just did it without any fuss. Then I got another 10% off instead of 5% so I was lucky, I agree. If they weren't going to match it I'd just order Click n Collect in two single orders. Note eveybody that the OZBTUES code worked on a mouse over $50 that I just used to test the code on other products without the hdd in the basket. I got an M325 logitech mouse at Officeworks for $13.50 in the same transaction: a price beat for this mouse at MSY at $15.

  • bought one and picked up when doing shopping, same design as the 500GB which I got for free with Macbook Air purchase before, quite tough and reliable. Thanks OP

  • Caroline Springs Officeworks have 6 units left, they close at 9pm, so nearby peeps' better hurry.

    Ooops, nearly forgot, Thanks OP and thanks Dick Smith and Officeworks for their price beat policy.

  • No one's pointed out that the pictures both here and on the DSE site are all wrong. The drive has a "fat" middle line, not the super thin line as shown in the pics. Or is it just me??

    This is what you actually get:

    Not this:

      Did some research and the fat vs slim versions have identical names and identical model numbers (weird), but the slim version is 12.5mm thick whilst the fat version is about 15.0mm thick.

      Really bizarre that they have the same model numbers but different dimensions.

    • edit: nvm already answered above.

  • Has anyone else noticed this device is pretty slow?
    I was transferring about 20GB of photos to it yesterday and it was writing at about 30mb/s.
    I have a Samsung 1TB USB3.0 portable drive which is a couple of years old and I was seeing about 80mb/s doing the same job on it.

    Having read this, now I'm wondering why mine was so slow.
