cubox-i-4x4-solidrun

The latest offering from SolidRun has an introductory special price as per an email I received today. I have tried the cheap ebay android units, the more expensive minix units, and some expensive overseas options. This little unit (I have the previous CuBox-i 4pro) is by far the best at full HD playback. The built in wireless was not up to the job of Full HD streaming, but once on the ethernet port all HD Streaming worked flawlessly. If playing local content from USB etc it plays everything! The only unit that has come close in terms of performance and price is the Raspberry Pi 2, but I do notice how much faster the CuBox is. And all low power consumption. I replaced two full desktop computers that I was using as media centers with 2 of these units and love the very small footprint. Each to their own in regards to what you use to run your Kodi on (there will be comments, I know), but I have been through lots of devices and these are the first I am happy to use every day.

With Eco Post and current paypal exchange rate, 1 Unit total cost was AU$229.84

  • the power adapter is uncompatible in Australia (we are 240v)??
also what operating system does this run? and can it support netflix?

    • There is a 110v AND 240v option, but the 240v has Euro plug, so you will need a travel adapter for it.

It runs either Android 4.4 KitKat, or OpenElec. There are a few other options being worked on, but best to check the forum for more info. I only use them with OpenElec.

I guess if you use it with Android, then there would possibly be a way to get Netflix to run.

FYI, most of this information was available on the link……

      • The US plug option is multi voltage 100-240v even though on their website it states 110v (from memory the Euro one is too). The Euro option is a bit unwieldly when plugged through an adapter because of the design of the pins makes the main plug pack poke out really far so if you are going down that path then get the US plug option.

Otherwise buy a 5v dc 3amp plug pack with a 2.1mm plug locally such as http://www.jaycar.com.au/Power-Products-Electrical/Plugpacks…

probably cheaper to buy a ps3 and use the netflix app.

At this price I would also heavily recommend the N2820 Celeron NUC. It needs RAM and storage, but depending on how you configure it, could be as little as another $100.

I use one for my HTPC and a basic NAS and it does an admirable job.

Add Windows 10 for free and it can run anything you throw at it.

    • Alternately take a look at HP Microservers. Avoids the need for a NAS, reducing overall power consumption.

      • +1

Alternatively, look at a full height 19" rack mounted server, then add custom watercooling. That way you will have sufficient space for at least 10 hard drives, and the noise levels will be more acceptable for use as a HTPC. That will store anything that you throw at it.

If there is a deal about an iPod, should we make suggestions that a better alternative would be a full 7.1 channel surround sound system with subwoofer?

Is there a contest to see who offers the least logical, most "totally missed the point" suggestion for alternatives?

    • On a side note, can the N2820 NUC handle h265 decoding (720p or 1080p)?

      • No hardware decoding so it's software only. I'd hazard a guess and say it won't play it smoothly.

For the same price you could even get one of those mini PCs that has an Intel Day Trail Atom and runs Windows 8.1 and not even need anything extra.

Much better for HTPC use than an ARM running Android in my opinion.

  • Has anyone used these small media centre style boxes for steam streaming? Any reports or recommendations?

    • +2

I have a Raspberry Pi 2 running OpenElec and kodi and it's awesome.
I paid about $85 all up for all the bits (rpi2,case,usb wireless and micro sd) and it streams stuff off the nas downstairs amazingly well.

I went with this configuration as I have unblock-us and use the NBC sports center add on to get golf channel but it is one fantastic box. Coupled with xioami 10400mah power bank and I have a portable media player

      • Just curious, how long does the battery lasts playing videos.

      • Sorry about the late reply - sorry I was actually referring to Steam In-home Streaming for gaming.
I have an rPi and it works well as you have it - streaming video using Kodi/OpenElec from NAS. In fact I recently got a Slice (they ran a kickstarter campaign) which is also working really well - it uses the rPi Compute Module. Love the Power Bank Idea - good one.

  • Which is better, this or the Xiaomi Mi Box 4K Version?

  • It looks to be a 1.2Ghz quad core Arm A9 processor; I think that's why they don't mention a clock speed.
