Best value laptop for around $350

Hi, hopefully someone can give me some good advice.

I'm going to be spending a lot of time in the hospital and I'm looking for something that'll fulfill my fairly simple needs.

I'm looking for something I can watch movies/netflix, music and play the occasional crappy browser games on.

Thank you :)

  • Could try the new Kogan Atlas 14" laptop (Pentium N3xxx series) with Full HD 1080p display. That's pretty much the best laptop in under then $400 price range.

I would stay well away from Kogan

      • Mind to elaborate?

        • You can go into China's market and buy a cheap laptop and put your brand on it, this is exactly what a Kogan laptop is.

@eXtremist: that Kogan Atlas was actually made by Clevo, a big laptop OEM company based in Taiwan. Laptop itself is likely made in China though.

Whole bunch of refurb Inspirons (and a few new) available fairly cheap here… http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/product…

Take your pick. Aim for one with a longer lasting battery, given your needs. I'd also go for the ones with 4gb of memory, lack of that being the normal bottleneck.

Dell are arguably one of the better brands at the moment, build quality and warranty service are both decent. I'd rather a refurb Dell than a few other brands I could mention. The other alternative is to have a look at MSY if you have a store nearby, you should easily get an ok $350-ish machine.

Strongly agree. You get much better value from refurb than brand new. And Dell has pretty good service.

If you can add another $80 or so, this would meet your needs nicely. Quite tough, good battery life, very bright and vivid screen, and surprisingly good sound. Also, it folds back or you can use it as a (heavy) tablet.

      $412 DFO-3203430IP REFURBISHED Inspiron 11 3000 Series 2-in-1 Intel Celeron Processor N2840 (1M Cache, up to 2.58 GHz)

Or this one, which is more conventional, but will be a lot more plasticky.

      $279 DFO-3029445IP REFURBISHED Inspiron 15 Laptop Intel(R) Celeron(R) Dual Core N2830 Processor 4GB DDR3L 1333MHz (4GBx1)

      • agree as well. I bought a refurb, its just like new. was less than half the price and comes with new warranty. took two day to be delivered.

the two mentioned above are great choices, small screen (about 12inch) that can be used as a tablet if you want, or a 15 inch model.

these are at JB hifi if you want to check out first before you buy.

I always recommend to get hands on with a laptop before you buy it. Check if you like the feel of the keyboard, trackpad etc. Is it responsive when you load websites? How is the sound?

The Kogan as above, with its full HD screen has an amazing resolution spec for the money - but I don't like how you can't check it out before you buy it.

Lower end laptops often do not have a DVD drive, so watch out for that if you want to play movies from discs.
