    Tried Gumtree yet?
Try travelling out of your suburb a bit and into the surrounding places. Go to every shopping district you can think of and look out for

    • notice boards with job ads
    • job ads posted on shop windows
    • new businesses that are opening and are looking for staff

Take note of all the business names and when you get home google them, and research to see if they have open positions available.

Retail part-time or casual jobs are the easiest to find but it can be a bit harder to get in if you do not have an open schedule — as a casual you will be expected to be available at all times in case they have a person sick.

If you are not employable then make yourself employable — take a short course in coffee making (Barista) and also take up the a cert with Responsible Service of Alcohol + Gambling. You'd need this if you want to work in a bar, cafe, club or restaurant.

Nothing beats a well presented, well spoken and motivated walk in. Put aside a day and put yourself out there. If someone is motivated enough to go store to store, odds are they will work hard and business know this. Anyone can send a resume online, not everyone is willing to do hard yard to land a job.

Masters or Bunnings…good for you and good for us.

    • what do you mean by good for us?

It would be handy to have someone on the inside to list bargains..didn't think I would have to explain it.

    • Op - You seems to all over the place. Retail/desk job/Fast food, etc… Just narrow it down to one of those and go crazy. Your focus should be to look for a job. You mentioned you wanted to work weekends, so dedicate two days during the week to look for a job and you will get one in no time.

  • Hi OP,

My suggestion is to try airtasker.com for your area. There's always lots of little odd jobs you can pick up (while you search for p/t work), or if you take it seriously enough, perhaps it could BECOME your p/t work. eg if you have Excel / Office / PC skills, you could help others with those. Or music / video editing. Or web design skills. Also if you're happy to pick up/deliver/transfer items in your car. Also quite a few jobs on there for office admin type roles too…

    Best of luck. :)

  • Thank you all

Maybe I should have been more specific, the large retailers that have their own HR department will require you to go through a formalised process and walking in will have minimal effect. The smaller retailers and privately owned and run businesses and franchises are your best bet. Dress nice, practice your speech and unleash once you are talking to the right person (don't waste it on the front desk if they are not the manager/owner). Key things they are looking for is that you are flexible with your hours, after something long term and willing/capable to learn new things.

    • you need to apply online for these stores, same with Hungry Jacks, MacDonald Coles, Big W etc.

keep trying, but also go online .

  • Thank you all

    • Any luck yet?

  • No, still trying :(

  • If you don't mind cleaning, put an ad on gumtree or see if any of the cleaning companies need people, they are never short of work- we have trouble getting a cleaner sometimes
