Good that it's a camera and not lens deal
It's not just a lens, it's a camera body with a one (single kit) lens, as opposed to two (twin kit) lens.
I have this camera, it's decent. Only gripe is that I have found that photographing certain colours (like purple) throws out the auto focus and I have to switch to manual. For price comparison, I got it from Good Guys with the twin lens kit for $449, local store was clearing some models. These have the EF-S lens. People buying this aren't after pro cameras and lens anyway. It's a affordable transition to a DSLR.

There would be many things which would fit this filter.
Curved glass can be very expensive and there is a lot of EOS models with EF-S mount.
On top of that - as mentioned by many before - this a a camera body with the lens.While lenses don't seem like they're worth much to a layperson, there's actually a lot of precision and expensive glass that goes into making one along with motors for auto focus and image stabilisation for some lenses. Expensive lenses are also a 'buy it for life' item, meaning it should easily last you a lifetime.
