I wish they put the next model that has a HD tuner on sale soon!

  • does it do 720/1080p MKV? its not worth anything unless it does.

    • Yes, it does.

    My friend bought 2.
    I bought 1.
    could not resist the tempation.

    Skinny,
as for the ap-360T model with build-in HD Tuner, you need to be aware that the unit will convert the signal to analog before recording it. so no digital full HD recording.
This is stupid and was the reason why I didn't buy the ap-360t model.

    Noise36
    yes to both 720p/1080p MKV.
IMHO, This aussie player is better than the WD TV.
I returned my WD TV to buy this instead.

      Skinny,

I bought the 360T and as far as I aware, my HD channel recordings are in HD. It has a built in HD tuner that it records from and the file info suggests that the resolution is 1080i (same as it is transmitted in). The quality of recodings are amazing - just ask my kids, they love the animated movies that have been on lately.

On the negative side, the unit is full of bugs and problems with ongoing firmware updates trying to fix some of these issues. Buyer beware… if I had my time again, I would wait for some more postive feedback in the user forums. Tomm many issues at the moment that are not worth the hassle. Astone need to do some serious corrective action very quickly!

Will be a great unit once all is running smoothly though.

Hope this assists some of you buyers out there:

I can confirm the Astone AP-300 plays 720/1080p MKV just fine. It also plays most FLV and WMV files also, which is great for downloading long YouTube videos and watching them on the big TV. Networking is very smooth and I play things from a network server daily, and can also copy things to and from the media box via the network from my PC using the NAS feature. There's also a very useful feature that lets you copy files from a USB stick or network server directly to the internal hard drive, so I never have to go near my computer to add files.

Subtitle support is great and with new firmware the colour, size and location of text-based (SRT) subtitles can be adjusted while playing.

Unfortunately, I've had a few severe issues with two Sony Bravia LCD TVs. Usually the picture appears pink when hooked up via HDMI and it takes four or five goes of unplugging the HDMI cable and plugging it back in to fix it. Last night I simply could not get HDMI to work and after ten minutes of screwing around had to resort to just using the A/V jacks. Astone reckons they've fixed the Sony Bravia pink problem with their latest firmware, but after updating it to the latest firmware HDMI audio output is completely broken on the Sony TV. If you always play your files through an amplifier connected via optical or coax cables this isn't an issue, but for the moment I'd completely avoid the box if you own a Sony LCD. I hope a firmware fix will solve these issues soon. No issues whatsoever with my LG LCD via HDMI.

The box is currently no good for using as a shop display playing multiple videos (eg my video store where they have multiple movie trailers playing from a single folder) because a menu is displayed at the top of each video for about 5 seconds whenever it begins a new file. It's quite annoying when I'm watching a TV series and the menu suddenly appears when playing the next file. There also appears to be no way to find out Time Remaining while playing a file, which is annoying when you want to go to bed soon and don't know if there's 10 minutes or 40 minutes left in the movie you're watching.

I would also HOPE that these heavy units are well packed during transport, because on three occasions I've purchased things from CoTD and 1SaleaDay and they've been damaged in transit because there was simply no padding provided whatsoever, just the heavy item thrown into a Jiffy mailer.

Basically it's not perfect, but a fantastic deal for the price. They seem to release new firmware every two or three weeks so it's a bit of a work-in-progress, so hopefully things will improve rapidly.

    • good work, greenie.

  • Thanks for your detailed comments. I want to buy a good media player, but can't run through the complex information and bugs these things have. Probably it is better to wait till these things are in more user friendly formats more like PnP.
