I saw these for about $5 at KL last month…

    • +3

Yes of course but most people were upgrading to Rolex for $10, right? :)

        Only the rich ones…

I prefer those Rolexen, they are lighter than the ones we get here, and the back pops off so you can change the battery…

    • Holiday in KL..nice

      • Strictly business trip… ;)

Very misleading to state these don't require a battery.

    • Thanks @s2purple but how so?

      • They don't work without a battery…

      • +1

Open one up and you'll see a li-on battery. Remove it and the watch won't work lol.

        • Thanks. Whats the model of the Citizen that you have? I'd like to follow this up with Citizen as well.

        • @Star Jewels:

I don't remember the model. Sold it off years ago as I moved onto mechanical watches.
Don't bother following up with Citizen. They know about it running on a battery as the only way to get it changed is to send it back to them.

Don't get me wrong they are great watches especially for the price range. Had mine for 4 years before I sold it as 'working in perfect condition.'

        • @s2purple: Thanks

        • @Star Jewels: From memory they use light to power the watch, so there must be a power bank (i guess that's why there was a l-ion type battery in there) for the watch to store the energy it gets from light. So the statement should be they do not require battery REPLACEMENT.

"This technology, now known as “Eco-Drive,” can generate power from any light source, artificial, natural and even dim light to keep watches running without ever replacing batteries." - From citizen website

I had 2 of these very long time ago, my wife had one as well, all 3 stopped working we got 2 of them repaired under warranty they again stopped working again not long after. I personally would never buy one again .. just personal preference though.

@Star Jewels: I owned one years ago; from memory the battery is supposed to last about 25 years. Yes it has a battery, but very few people will ever have it replaced.

        • @macrocephalic: Thanks. We still get people coming in with the first gen Eco Drives. The worst instance was one where it used to lose 15-20 mins a week but it was a golden oldie. Cheers.

        • @Star Jewels:

I think all Eco Drive watches are like this. A lot of people don't understand that they actually do need a battery. Its just that you don't need to change it (until the battery reaches end of its life span).

In the blurb on your webpage:

..never needs a battery change. ..harnesses the power of light and converts it into energy which is stored in an Eco-Drive energy cell (read: battery). It recharges continuously in any kind of light to run forever.

        • @Scope:

I bought one in 1999 or 2000 and haven't had an issue with it. It's only off by a few minutes a year.
Obviously it has a battery, as it has an alarm function and count down timer function on it too, but I've saved a significant amount of time and money by not having to get the battery changed as I did with all my other watches.
Much better than an automatic watch too as I can put it in the drawer for a week and not have to reset the time when I want to use it again plus as noted above it has an alarm and countdown function which I've never seen in an automatic watch (if anybody can provide a link to one please do).
In conclusion this has the best watch functionality ever and I'm not going to even consider a smart watch until my Ecodrive gives up the ghost.
          (I've probably jinxed it now.)

        • @coldturkey: Thanks for that. We had a quick chat with Citizen yesterday and it was the capacitor / battery talk. In our next meeting, we will be able to get the update directly from them. Cheers

For those who are after a leather strap, please have a look at http://www.starbuy.com.au/citizen-eco-drive-bm8470-03a . The rest of the deal is http://www.starbuy.com.au/watches/citizen-mens-eco-drive-wat…

  • Didn't you guys always used to have free shipping? :(

    • Sure did and do for Star Jewels. It just got a little hard to convince some customers, when they were comparing prices with overseas sites, to add their shipping charges and not just the headline number. Had to give up explaining after a while and hence the policy on StarBuy is just the headline number. We will have some free shipping offers later as well. Thanks

      • +1

You mean the free shipping isn't really "free"? :)

  • I think we have been OzBargained!! Website down. Techs are just looking at it now. Sorry!

Got one of these, a titanium metal edition, HIGHLY recommended, I leave it in the draw for months, take it out its still ticking and still perfect time, wear it a bit, give it maybe 20mins in the sun and back in the draw

A Citizen bit of genius really

  • Do you have options to change the strap of BM8470-11A to the leather one?

    • Hello. We only supply factory direct watches as pictured. Any good watchmaker will be able to help you with a leather strap. Thanks
