By George CodFish Filets. $2. Coles (Nationwide) - Further Reduction

140

Nothing fishy about this bargain.

Spotted by the better half last night in late night shopping.

Was $3 in other post about a week back. Now $2. Can not go wrong at 1dollar a serve. There were still about 50 boxes when we left last night.

Best of luck. Expiry date and condition (ethically/sustainably sourced) was good for about another five months.

Hopefully it helps out some.

Be gentle. First post from a long time lurker.

Next week it will be $0.50.

    • It is amazing to think of the margins they make by offering these products to consumers at such inflated prices. I still think that 2dollars is above the break even point for them and would not be surprised if they had some sort of back log. However, when looking at all the other brands and the "quality" on offer it would only take a consumer with an average IQ to buy these quick smart. From the below comments it seems it may be nation wide now. I will try and amend title.

  • Spotted these in SA the other day too :)

  • My george croumbed HOKI wedges i got on sale while back contain only 55% of the fish according to the ingredients. Still a bargain tho at $2

    • soon… they will get to the point, when it is advertised as Cod fish 'flavoured' fillets, and add in the point that it may contain traces of fish.

      • And the Cape Merchant frozen prawns i bought from woollies i thought were from a bay somewhere in Australia called Cape Merchant… silly me.
Turns out that's just the brand and the prawns are imported from Asia somewhere.

I do really need to pick up my game.

I bought some crumbed prawns for half price recently, thinking i got a bargain. When I cracked open the bread crumb, the prawn was tiny, school prawns actually. But with the crumb on, can easily pass as a decent medium-large prawn.

      • or maybe the ingredients will just say "cod fish" in quotation marks, and presume we will appreciate it's, you know, just "like" "cod fish".

    • These are a decent chunky fillet that taste exactly like cod - which is sufficient explanation for the U.K. predilection for smothering battered cod with malt vinegar. It will take just about any flavour you throw at it, and the texture is firm but "flaky".

I'm making freezer space _now :-).
      TY OP.

  • Supermarkets selling way too much ready made premixed food now days. Even going to seafood section, I just wanted some mussels or clams and the only crap they have are mussels in some sort of sauce.

    • Yep - but these are fillets with two little blobs of the curry/cheese/bechamel sauce in a "bake'n'shake" plastic bag. If you just open the bags you have two 150g fillets of a neutral flavoured firm fish to play around with. For all that I've dissed cod, it it several rungs up the ladder from the pasty flavourless bits of industrial waste being pulled out of the Mekong:-/

      • Oi, oi. I don't mind basa. It's nice blank canvas to your sauces!

        • True - but cod doesn't collapse as you pour them on, and you don't need a spoon, you can eat it with a fork:-p

Keep an eye on the expiry date. Some at my local expires in August, while others are way into 2016.

    • Should be alright beyond the expiry as it's frozen food

    • Very true about the exp. these ones were in to 2016. Again. I didn't see the reason for the heavy discount. But again take off all the extra cardboard packaging and you are able to cram about 3-4 times as much in to the same space. Should keep well for a year if need be. Although I am more of a meat pie guy myself. As far as "healthy" options goes. This is at the direction of the boss.

Nb/ quantity bought was at my discretion. Although I did leave some 50 boxes behind. It was a temping offer to get more. All types were on offer.

      • Expiry dates are pretty much for arse coverage by sellers. If you check that the meat is still good, you can eat it. I cannot imagine how much still edible steak that gets thrown out just because the little label say's its expired. Seriously, the closer to the expiry a piece of steak is the better its tenderness. Any butcher that know's their stuff would ask you when you want to eat your steak before picking out an appropriate piece for you.

        • I miss the days when my local Foodland would throw out wax-coated Margaret River vintage for 99 cents as it was past the "best before". I was careful, and never kept it longer than 2 years before breaking in….

          "Use by"s OTHO…

  • Are these nice? I like the Sealord's Dory Fillets!

  • About 20 [mainly spanish cod, tho 8 cheddar and 2 red curry] left at Parkholme [SA] @13:15 local time.

  • I bought a few of these today. I ignored the instructions to cook in the oven in foil package… honestly who does that these days? I emptied the frozen contents into a bowl, covered in glad wrap and 6 minutes in the microwave. Added some cous cous and hot water and five minutes later I was scoffing the lot.

  • We were looking the other day but none with just beer batter:/

They did have haddock fillets though - 2nd best.

    • Haddock second best? It actually tastes like fish - cod is merely a good fish texture to support the sauce or for the batter to crisp on!
