I wouldn't entrust my families safety to an ionization alarm . If your going to have a smoke alarm make the first one a photoelectric smoke detector .
All new homes since 1997 have to have mains powered smoke detectors to be installed by a licensed electrician . IIRC flats can have battery backed devices so long as they are li-ion batteries .
These smoke detectors are really only good as an extra line of defence but better than nothing especially for a few sheckles .
