Uniball Jetstream Retractable 8-Pack Pens for $12.50 @ Officeworks (In-Store Only)

800

Great price for 8 pens: 5 black + 3 blue (about $1.50 each, compared to $4.50 each in a 4-pack and $4 each in a 12-pack)
According to the website, only available in store.
Bought a couple of packs which I found in one of the bargain bins in the Hornsby store over the weekend - not sure about availability elsewhere, but worth it if you can find it!

Well the larger 12 pack is $48 ($4 each). This is a very good price.

I use Jetstreams nearly exclusively, usually 0.7mm though not 1.0mm. I import them from Japan or buy them every time I go to Asia.

The cheapest I can import the refills (no pen barrel) is about $1.60 each as a pack of 12. The pens themselves are about $3.50 each to import.

Just give these pens a try, you will simply not be able to go back to the 30c bic rubbish you usually get here.

I for one will be picking up a pack straight after work today if there're any left.

Well the larger 12 pack is $48 ($4 each).

        Where ?

      • do you look for them on eBay? i've been trying to find the laknock pens by Uniball, but they're elusive buggers. big fan of those since i don't really use gel like the jetstream (still own a couple because why not)

        • eBay, or if I'm ordering lots of stationery I sometimes use Jetpens.

      • I have a 0.7mm Blue Jetstream and while I like it, it is a bit thin. I was thinking of trying the 1mm. Why is the 1mm not recommended?

        • The 1.0 is still great, just not as good as the 0.7 in my opinion. I just find the smaller stroke width to look neater on paper, and I suppose it would use less ink too so it would last longer.

        • If you like the 0.7mm, you must try the 0.5mm from Pentel Energel.
It is the best pen I have ever used and I have been using it for the last 8 years.
          Perfect everytime.

        • @he88388: Yes I also have Energels and Hi-Tec Cs too

      • Where do you order your Japanese stationery from?

In the past I've used www.stationeryart.com — who have some good prices and cheap shipping but very limited (read: crappy) stock, and a couple of others I can't remember off-hand now.

        • eBay or sometimes Jetpens.

      • The 0.7mm used to be my favourite disposable pen, but haven't seen them stocked anywhere recently.

The 1.0mm is ok, but think they must be manufactured elsewhere as I've had a few duds.

        • Still made in Japan I think, but I find the larger the ball diameter the more likely it is to blotch (though still much less often than cheaper pens).

    8 pens for 12 bucks?
    whats the bargain?

    • -8

      whats the bargain?

looks like the normal price to me…

      • -1

        may actaully be cheaper.
        12 for 48 bucks - maddness

        • That's the "gel" ink, not the "permanent" ink…

        • @jv:
you have a good eye sir.

        • @tuzii:

you have a good eye sir.

          and a bad one…

        • @jv: They have the same ink, just labeled differently by OfficeWorks

        • @cbeard:

          They have the same ink

website shows different tip and different inks…

        • +4

@jv: Rollerball is stainless steel. Jetstream ink is both gel and permanent. They are identical refills inside. Trust me, I'm a Jetstream fanatic.

        • +1

          @cbeard:
i love the jet stream as well

        • @jv:
Described differently by officeworks but is the same ink and same pen the the 12pack vs the 8pack

  • +4

    Smoothest pens I've ever used

Uniball jetstreams? Best writing experience without spending $200.
Pity that writing is a dying art - almost worth taking it up again having used these fantastic scribes.
Another + with writing? No automated spelling corrections, get it "write" first time;)

    • Agree. I like writing with nice fountain pens and the Mitsubishi Uniball family is my fall-back option. At this sort of price - very attractive.

They also make the nicest mechanical pencils (Kuru Toga)…

      • Me too.
I wish that finer point pens of this type were more commonly available.
Thinking Rollerball makes me think Rollerball (1975).
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rollerball_%281975_film%29

      • +1

Kuru Toga pencils are a nifty design, but I hate the 'tip wiggle' they have. I love Pentel Kerry mechs myself.

        • +1

Might have to look at those (Pentel Kerry).

What I do like about the Kuru Toga design is the way that the lead rotates so that you continue to get a sharp point.

    • +1

The cheap chinese fountain pens are also quite nice if you like writing but not breaking the bank. There are many reviews on reddit and other forums. Some are just as good as their more expensive branded counterparts.

Sadly, the only time I write properly now is for birthday cards and sending things off in the post. Even the latter can be replaced by a label printer. I used to journal but I moved that to my computer which I am reconsidering.

  • -4

We get similar nice gel pens at work, and somehow a few just randomly end up at home….cost $0 :p

  • Anyone got any recommendations for pens comparable to uni ball without the uni ball price?

Got some (like 50 lol) really cheap really nice metal paper mates with gel insert cartridges that are nice. Got them really cheap like 50c a pen cheap from dimmeys but was wondering if there's something comparable but way cheaper than uni ball.

    • +1

Try "Pilot", it's way better than Uni Ball for that price.

      • Excellent thanks any particular range in pilot I should look at?

        • Try Acroball or Super Grip series.

  • +2

Uni Jetstream aren't normal ballpoint pens, nor are they actually gel or rollerball either. These are an emulsion ink, which makes the colours brighter and richer.

It's not just the smoothness, but also the intensity of the colours that come out that makes them worth it.

If you want some cheap ones, get them in bulk off the Rakuten Global Market. There are many varieties including multi-pens that combine 2, 3, 4, colours with or without a mechanical pencil, and more luxury models (e.g., Jetstream Prime).

    • -7

but also the intensity of the colours that come out that makes them worth it.

except for the black ones, because black isn't a colour…

      • +1

The black is darker than regular black ballpoints as well.

      • +7

Black is the darkest color, the result of the absence of or complete absorption of light. It is the opposite of white (the combined spectrum of color or light). It is one of the four primary colors in the CMYK color model, along with cyan, yellow, and magenta, used in color printing to produce all the other colors.

Once again showing the true depth and breadth of your knowledge.

Well, couldn't stand to sit there while Jetstreams were such a good price so I took a "smoko" to go buy 2 packets. I can confirm these have the normal SXR-10 refills inside, brilliant pens.

OfficeWorks sells the exact same individual pens for $5.98 ea!

If you haven't tried them before just go and test one out in a stationery store. They are miles ahead of every other gel pen, you wouldn't realise it was gel except it feels so smooth to write.

If you want to know why Japanese pens like this are so much better than other brands, remember they have to write complicated Kanji sometimes 20 strokes each in a very small space without any blotches or smudging. Having one of the most complex written languages combined with their advanced industrialisation has meant the Japanese have produced many of the best advancements in stationery tech.

  • This is one of the best Pens and it is a great price too.

  • +1

Great pens but be careful not to drop them as the ball on the tip will break rendering it useless. I`ve done that too many times..

    • That would explain why my kids' pens keep stuffing up… Otherwise these are my favourite pens. Great price. Cheaper than Ebay refills even.

  • It's been this price for a while now. At least for the past month in store.

  • +1

When i went to the Castle Hill store, i tried to look for them everywhere. They werent near the pens section, but at the back left of the store, second last aisle towards the end of the aisle. Price is marked at $15.49 or soemthing, but scans at $12.50. >10 packs remaining.

    • +1

They're merchandised in a bulk stack, not as a regular line in its home location, so you may have to search around the store a bit to find them.

      • But i found them in the aisle with all the food, biscuits etc. Just sayin

        • By the sounds of it people chew through em.

  • +1

Never used these - are these the 'gel' ones that go through the paper and can get smudged easily?

I personally prefer papermate kilometrico - light, thin and goes for ages!

    Kilometricos FTW!

    • +1

+1. I like my pens how I like my women.

      • +2

        Not wet? Owch.

    • +1

No, these aren't your typical wet gel pen. They use a hybrid gel which doesn't smudge and doesn't go through the paper.

Give them a shot sometime. Once you Jetstream, you can't use anything else.

      • My jetstreams keep dying with 3/4 ink. Any tips to fix the tips?

        • I haven't had that problem myself. You could try heating the tip gently. Some people say you can open the pen and blow gently with your mouth over the end of the ink tube but haven't tried this myself.

  • Jetstream are my favourite. Been using a Jetstream multipen for 5 years now and it's my favourite!

  • If these are the kinda ones I'm thinking of…
I wrote with these for many hours a day (first time in 20 years). Writing like a madman, expecting cramps… but not a single one. On the other hand (pardon the pun), they were expensive, and each pen didn't even last a week!!!

  • +1

Thanks op. Great pens, smooth and quick drying ink (that's why a lot of left handed people like them)

  • Bic Atlatis pens ($4.90 4 pack from Officeworks) are the second best to the Jetstream. Super smooth (1.2mm) and fast ball pen.

  • Love my parker jotters and fountain pen.

Always been thinking of a cheap change so I'll see if I can nab a pack of these.

  • There's quite a few left at the Glen Waverley officeworks. Right towards the end of aisle 4,to the left at the very back where the aisle ends.

I see 17 on the shelf.

  • THanks man this is a decent deal. I was in Tokyo recently and spent about 4 hours looking at pens in Ityo and Loft.

These are good pens and cost about $1-$1.50 in Japan. As much as I like them my first one (.7mm) went to shit about an hour into usage. It's started to have those glitches in the ink where one side of the stroke won't have ink.

  • Great deal, thanks for sharing. Using mine right now =D

  • +1

you can get free pens from NAB

  • None left in the Townsville store. The only ones they had were the 4 pack for $17.78, so this price is definitely a bargain.

They are fantastic pens and I don't use anything else. Picked up a ten pack of blue and black refills from eBay a while back and just keep re-loading my old pens. 0.7mm for me, 1.0mm is way too thick and doesn't write as smoothly.

  • +1

For the Sydney people, still plenty at the Hunter St officeworks

    • Tried Glebe NSW and they had no stock, and sure enough they're not on your list - so would strongly suggest everyone check this list before heading into a store if you want to get these pens.

  • Wow these are popular!! Bit of stock left at Russell St Melbourne. I nearly got ozbargained as I wasn't the only one asking for them at the store.

  • never used them before but grabbed one to try out thanks to Ozbargain

    Punchbowl had stock.

Also, the packaging on this is ridiculously big. Its bigger than my head. I have a big head.
