Penfolds Koonunga Hill Seventy Six 2012 Vintage $12.80ea @1st Choice Instore+Online (NSW/WA/ACT)

80

Saw this instore yesterday, and same price is online. Pretty sure it's a clearance since the original instore price was $16, and new price appears to be 20% off. Decent deal considering RRP/Penfolds cellar price is $25, and cheapest competitors online are between $17-$20. http://www.winesellersdirect.com.au/red-wines/shiraz-caberne….

It's hard to find many bargains amongst the Penfolds range these days, and I think this one actually hits on the quality/value ratio. It's a definite step up for the standard Koonunga Hill, plus it has the sexyretro label. Oh, and it's from a renowned good vintage for Barossa/SA wines (it looks like the seventy six hasn't been released in the poorer years, perhaps in order to preserve quality).

For extra value, don't forget:
+ Further 5% off if buying 6 or more
+ Free Delivery for orders over $150 (get a dozen and add another $6 bottle to qualify)
+ Cashrewards on 1stchoice
+ flybuys

      • Doesn't work for me either "Sorry, we can't find that page.".

  • The wine expert at the Melbourne good food and wine show said that this is a very very good wine to cellar.

    • seems about right - notes on the penfolds site state that original bottles of Koonunga Hill (from 1976) still occasionally turned up at their clinics for re-corking when this 'homage' was first released in 2006!

  • not available at that price in Melbourne I think.

    • thanks, have updated.

I have cellared these bottles in case lots for up to 10 years after purchasing. I can attest that they get better every year. What I would do was write on the case what year I would drink it and then that year I would have 1 bottle a month. Totally worth it. It has a bit more bite when young (still good though), but just mellows over the years.

If you have the space I highly recommend getting a few cases to put aside (and a couple of loose ones for now to 'set the benchmark'). It will amaze you how the flavour changes with time.

I think in the 90s they were about $10 a bottle and I would buy bulk when on special at about $5-$6. So allowing for inflation.

  • Thanks Op. Just order 2 dozen. My dad loves Koonunga Hill. Thankfully I have nice relatives in Sydney to accept my order.

  • Thanks OP, grabbed a dozen. I'd recommend the Zilzie Shiraz as the bottle to get you to $150 for free shipping. It's a decent drop for under $10.
