Perth citizens have to PAY to park at public transport stations? Wow… Imagine if Sydney started charging commuters to park at their train stations… Imagine the backlash…. then imagine the amount of profit the government would make, Glad they don't charge for parking in the eastern capital cities…

That's a little like Sydney citizens paying for street parking. The whole idea is to discourage reliance on personal vehicles where possible. People were not happy when Transperth started charging for parking, but we moved on. Sydneysiders would too.

  • We, too, pay for street parking (the locations that matter anyway) here in Perth. Simply 'moving on' isn't the solution. The whole point of providing 'park and ride' facilities is to encourage the use of public transport to and from the CBD via train, charging to do so seems to be grossly contradictory of what they're trying to achieve in my opinion. No surprise though, the government is known not to make the wisest of decisions…every so often.

Appears to be free for tomorrow as well…..

An absolute disgrace to charge for parking at a station that doesn't have enough parking bays or smart rider machines (all stations) to then miss a train because the government hasn't ordered enough carriages to service the lines and is so incompetent they can't even have a ticketing system functional.

BTW Transperth I loved all those years of 50c train fares to anywhere using the smartrider they gave me in school….Tickets please….ummm sir you are not supposed to use this card yet….ummm you gave it to me 5 years ago when I was in school….the system is not ready yet sir please buy a ticket next time…rinse and repeat the next day.

Parking will continue to be free at Transperth car parks tomorrow, Wednesday 17 June, due to ongoing software issues with the SmartParker machines.

There is no need to tag on to the machines or buy a cash ticket. No fines will be issued except for people who park outside marked bays or in disabled bays when they are not eligible.

A software upgrade was carried out over the weekend and it appears to have affected the majority of the machines on the network.

We are working to rectify this issue as soon as possible and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

    • thanks for the update….!!

  • They even take the piss in their stupid emails

Yeh because everyone is so inconvenienced being able to park for free. (that’s if there is a spot available)

  • The whole idea of public transport is to discourage motor vehilce use. Charging to park in a public car park sounds like a money making scheme but say for example we here in Sydney accept the fact that Bondi Beach always charges for a parking space with meters. Yes some parking spaces would be taken up by shopkeepers and other non commuters but when l get on the train of a morning there a whole area of parking bays but no potential for non commuters to use the bays other than say the nearby doctors surgery and nearby Centrelink office. Plus l bet much more commuters are simply parking off street to avoid the fees in Perth too… and councils and residents up in arms by overcrowded suburban streets in the likes of Clarkson and Mandurah etc etc…

  • The idea behind charging for parking at the train stations was to discourage people from parking their car at the train station and either car pooling to work or cycling to work - thus making car parks unavailable for train commuters.
The $2 fee is a reasonable small fee to pay for the convenience of parking and discourages the above behaviour.

The problem with trains in Perth is that the stations are located in the middle of freeways, away from suburbia. At most stations, to avoid parking you'd either need to walk a minimum of 1km to the station from your home (no homes closeby) or catch a feeder bus to the station.

  • Looks like this 'bargain' has expired.
