Oneworld Sapphire (Air Berlin) Status Match for non Oneworld Frequent Flyers - FREE

380

This isn't valid for everyone, and I'm not sure if it's necessarily a "deal", but if you happen to have elite status with a non Oneworld alliance airline, you can get a free 12 month status match with Air Berlin to their Top Bonus Gold level. This is Oneworld Sapphire, which gives you automatic access to Oantas Lounges for you + 1 guest, along with the usual elite status benefits.

The bonus with this is that Air Berlin seem to have a partnership agreement with Virgin Australia, so with the one card, you can access Virgin Lounges when flying Virgin and Qantas Lounges when flying Qantas.

My status match to Star Alliance Gold came through in 2 days. I don't fly business on domestic flights, and don't fly enough domestically to get status, so it's quite valuable for me.

I wonder if i can get them to match my Etihad Gold Status - I got earlier in the year.
(still havent got my card yet…..)

    • why not

      • +3

Because it's a waste of a status match if you've already got Qantas and Etihad gold. You don't get anything extra and you've used your status match with airberlin.

Better waiting until one of them is near expiring before matching with airberlin. Airberlin reguarly have status matches, but you only get one shot at it

Matching now could cost you an extra year or two of benefits, which you could have extended with airberlin

but he's wondering whether he can get them to. not whether he should. I don't see why they wouldnt

        • @edwinlin88: not having a go. just wanted to warn people. Quite a few of us took advantage of the Etihad status match deal. Gotta maximise the future benefits :)

    • Etihad gold, nice! Fly much? Or is there a better way of getting it? cmon tuzii share the secret!

      • +1

        ozbargain is my secret
I fly enough to keep my silver status, but now ill keep a lifetime gold status

        • +1

@tuzii Lifetime gold status?? how do we get that?

        • @skyanyan:
You fly more and you keep up you Tier Segments and your fine.

        • @tuzii: LOL :)).. I thought there was something else I was missing.. Hmm 40000 miles a year is tough.Anyway need to worry about it only in 2018 when the current gold card expires..

Personally, I wouldn't do it - if you currently have QF and Etihad gold, which gives you access to QF and Virgin lounges, what's the point of holding gold for three airlines at once (unless of course, you're planning to do a heap of Air Berlin flying in Europe)?

Airlines are very unlikely to status match more than once if you can't hold the status, so you could be left high and dry in 12 months if you don't requalify for any of them (and it sounds like you won't if you're currently pulling silver). I'd wait for another offer to present itself (these Air Berlin ones do come up frequently), closer to when your Etihad gold will expire.

        • +2

          Plus plus this.

Be strategic as by all accounts you've only ever got one shot at a status match with an airline. I'm etihad gold curtesy of the QF gold status match. But I'll be waiting until one of them runs out before matching with anyone else.

    • I too haven't got my Etihad gold card yet. The email said they will start sending it out after the new card designs are out by end of May. So hopefully it should be here in a months time.

    • I also havent got my card yet… Wonder when they send them out? Could use that to get the AirBerlin status match. Maybe you can get it with a copy of Etihad's welcome email?

      • +1

I got an email yesterday saying my card would be sent before the 10th of July

        • Thats good. Haven't heard anything from then since the welcome email.

        • @Hikey: Me too got the same email. So another two weeks waiting..

        • @skyanyan: Just take a print out of the email, works the same as the card, the card it just a plastic version of your membership number, which goes into the system anyway.

No problem to show the email to Virgin staff.

    • Just got my email, they have matched my Etihad Gold status which I got from the previous offer.

Qantas Gold runs out in <2 weeks so I am a happy chappy.

      Thanks OP

      • when did u apply? i applied last nite no response yet :(

Yesterday @ 11am then got the confirmation today at 5:40pm.

@dazzywazzy: thanks lad. hopefully they still processing mine :)

  • :( pity about it having to be non-one world, would have been nice for them to match my QFF Gold Status then use the airberlin FF card to get into Virgin lounges

  • +1

Wonder if they would match Virgin gold? Any idea how long the promo runs for?

    • I hope so. I just sent mine off! :) crosses fingers

    • +1

Yep, worked for me though I've read of people being denied. Got my email saying it was approved so logged into topbonus just to make sure and yep, pretty gold card sitting there with sapphire oneworld status! WIN!

      • Still waiting on a reply. When did you submit your email? I sent mine am 16 June….

  • Great deal. Thanks OP. Have just sent away application. FYI I sent in using my Etihad Gold which I got through the status match from Qantas in the previous deal.

    Cheers

    • Urg. What do you need airberlin for if you've already got qantas and etihad gold? Minimal additional benefits and you've used up your match with airberlin.

Save your status match for when etihad or QFF runs out. You are unlikely to get another shot at it.

      • +1

Urg. My Qantas runs out next week and I'll be back to silver. Heading to Europe in 21 days so this is perfect timing. Thanks for your concern though.

        • oh good. Just trying to warn people is all.

        • +1

QF sometimes will comp you another year of gold if you'll only miss it by a small amount or if it is your first year missing for a while.

        • @Matt P: I know, they did that for me last year! Had gold for four years whilst in mines, and haven't been able to reach again unfortunately.

        • +1

@dazzywazzy: ahh gotchya. I only got to 595 sc's last year and i got comped, this year i'll fall way short due to a change in career but sadly because of last years comp, i doubt i will this year. I had even planned to jump on a quick return just to get the points but didn't because they comped me :(

  • So I can match my Virgin Silver? I see they are affiliated but virgin are not one world. Any ideas people?

    • You can try. Some people have been matched to their silver from another silver. Not a whole lot of benefits to silver membership though, except for priority checkin

      • Cheers

Need status credits in a month so looks like the ole priority check in is all I've got.

  • caution! For those wanting to match their new Etihad gold, which was matched from their earlier deal

If you've already got Etihad Gold and another Oneworld Gold then there is little point to this unless you're actually flying airberlin a lot.

If you take advantage of the status match you will have used up your chance with airberlin. Wait until your Etihad or OW gold is about to expire, then try a status match to extend the benefits with airberlin

  • +1

Awesome - my dad has Star Alliance Gold status so this is an ideal way to get him up the OW ladder straight away.

  • to OP, what is your expiry date on ur topbus gold card?

  • Applied suing Star Gold back in April, they replied back within 1 day, stating that it was approved.. you will get email like below. I never received the 'red' card but received air berlin gold card in two weeks.

  • How to get star alliance gold ? I flew Lufthansa a lot while in Europe and honestly I quite enjoyed it. Any tips for star alliance status match ? I have etihad gold and virgin Australia platinum.

  • Note that there is a check box asking for Euro117 per year when joining Top Bonus but it isn't mandatory.

Does anyone know if there are any StarAlliance airlines that are free to join and have a status match with Virgin Platinum? I have already sent an enquiry email to Lufthansa.

    • TK, which is a Star Alliance airline, operates a non-publicised, discretionary status match. seems that there's no hard and fast rule…so some get it, some don't. and apparently, it can be a real pain with requests for various documents. the one commonality seems that non-alliance airlines (emirates, etihad, virgin, etc) are rejected outright.

  • I agree with previous comments that if you do not need this, do not apply for it as you are wasting your one and only chance to get a status match with this airline

  • +3

Hope is not another Regus membership flop

  • Hi Guys,
Is there an expiry date with this offer? My Gold status Start Alliance will expired in June 2015. cheers.

    • this is perfect for you then. If you apply today, you will get one year free!

You guys are awesome !!! Great Deal !!!

  • I'll give my VA Gold a go but am wary due to this article which says they won't accept Virgin Australia.
    http://www.ausbt.com.au/free-airberlin-topbonus-gold-oneworl…

But if they do. I'll just use the Air Berlin card for everything (Velocity and Oneworld partners) and claim all my flights for them as well and then only require one card to rule them all!

    • +1

I got my VA Gold status matched, I read that article too and was worried, but went through without a hitch!
