Feature request: Parent / child posts

Feature request:
Adds an additional link to allow a user to create a new bargain post that is based on (i.e. a child of) an existing post.

This establishes a two-way parent-child relationship between the original and the new post.

Multiple childs can also exist, and in instances where a more complex network exists (more than one child post) than a group is formed. If a group exists, users can subscribe to a list of 'trending deals' and receive newsletters / desktop notifications on deals originating from that merchant.

this also fixes concerns relating to this forum topic

Usage Scenario

A twenty percent off deal for eBay pops up on Ozbargain. Or some kind of Woolies catalogue special featuring over dozens of items, some not mentioned.

Obviously lot of other posters will spot other items within eBay that are related to the post and may wish to post a bargain that falls under the same domain / merchant.

Under normal circumstances, you'd submit a new deal, untick the 'not a duplicate' checkbox, populate all the existing fields and insert the same coupon code again, and if you were a good Ozbargain citizen you'd ideally cite the original post, but that's all automated if the user simply clicks "create new related post"

The new post will have

  • automatic citation of the previous deal and linkback to original post
  • automatic prefilling of coupon code (can be edited?), and other metadata such as deal start time and expiry date
  • automatically expires when the original deal is expired

The original post will have

  • A pingback notification to the original poster "Somebody has shared your post under a new bargain"
  • Positive vote adjusted by +1
  • A 'show related' button that links to a list of deals that have been created as a child post under this deal
  • Any users subscribed to this deal also automatically receives notifications that a child post was created and has hit the front page and has hit a vote count of (x) value.

Comments

  • Highly support this!

Also, can the comments be ranked Reddit style (best/top/new)?

  • +1

It's been suggested a few times before (i cant remember if on site discussion or moderator discussion), but requires a lot of redesign to make it work.

Also, if a user neg votes either the parent deal, or the child deal.. does it show on the other deal?

I think it would be easier just to "nest" top comments up the top of the original deal. I.e. if a comment gets 16+ votes, and 3 reports as "new deal" - it automatically adds it to the top of the deal (Just above the related store box), and the user gets his comment karma as deal karma.

    • Highly support the "top comment" suggestion. It was tried some time ago and then it was taken off for some reason. Showing the popular comment on the top would be an extremely useful feature, especially for popular deals which has over 100 comments. Most of these popular comments have useful information relating to the deal, which can easily be missed if they are on the 3rd page of the deal for instance.

      • IMO The problem with the old top comment method was that it just encouraged people to be snarky, and the comments didn't make much sense without context.

This idea would display like top comments, but would use the current title guidelines.

Maybe the reporting function could be used to write the "title" of the deal, and would hyperlink directly to the users comment

        i.e. +1 Davo1111 Acer Laptop $369 with code

When a comment gets +18 comment votes + at least 2 "new deal" reports it would automatically be added to the top deals list.

I think as well, there needs to be a "bottom sticky" on the front page. That stickies a deal at the bottom.

      • Highly support the "top comment" suggestion. It was tried some time ago and then it was taken off for some reason.

It's still there. Just click Top Comment on the yellow bar next to Mark All Read and Top. Test on this thread

        • Nice..Has it been reintroduced recently? Because I remember about having this feature and then it wasn't there for some time.

        • @mr_alligator:

It's always been there. It only activates when there are enough voted comments though.

        • @neil: ahh that explains why. thanks

  • I partly agree with this, mainly the part about when the first post including the specific code is marked as expired all deals after it with said code automatically get's marked as expired.

  • I suggest having a list of items on the right hand side of a deal page (where the top deals/new deals sit).

    • Users will be able to add the name and the price of an item to be upvoted/downvoted just like the old voting system.
    • Highly rated items would sit on top of the list with a maximum number (let's say 10) showing for organisation and overall page aesthestics.
    • Selecting the list heading (perhaps Items?) opens up a new page to view all items
    • Users can comment on an item by select reply to a sub-item which will have it's own post thread in the main deal.

I think this save people from listing multiple products from the same company on the main deal page as well.
