Looking for a Laptop for School

I am looking for a computer which you can bring to school under my $900 budget. I want the computer to have long life battery for school, a fast processor to load up programs fast and at least 13 inches. Please also help me find deals relating to this and I am looking to buy online so maybe one of the big tech stores in Australia.

Thanks for your help.

  • No harm in running with a refurbished (or new) Macbook Air. Also have high praise for the Dell Latitude 7000 series that occasionally go on sale at Dell's refurbished outlet. Fantastic laptops, light, built well and feel fantastic to use.

Occasionally - you can also snag on a second hand spec-ed up Thinkpad Carbon X1. Absolute workhorses of a machine.

    • Aren't MacBook Air's over $900?

Don't get a MacBook. GEt a real laptop.

Find a laptop with a 2015 INtel 5000 series processor and see if you can get it on special. That'll be fine for you.

Going to contest this statement right here. What defines a MacBook not a "real laptop" as such? What in your opinion, do you define as a "real laptop?"

To begin with - there is no such thing as a "2015 Intel 5000 series processor". The "5000 series" you are referring to, is in reference to the video card implemented into that specific chipset. Series has also been around since 2012 and is that of Haswell and Broadwell architecture.

OP said they wished to use the laptop for educational purposes, indicating lightweight is most likely to be a priority. This narrows the choice of laptop into an ultrabook-form factor or a slim laptop form factor. What laptops under the price of $900 can you suggest that provides around 10 hour operation in real world situations whilst maintaining a light and thin profile?

Please avoid attacking perfectly fine consumer products without any given points to back it up. Am most certainly not an Apple fanboy myself and whilst it is fine to give your opinion - it is not quite fine to bash a company's product solely based on that of your own opinion.

        • @professorturtle:

I honestly can't be bothered getting into an argument about apple vs windows laptops. I am biased and want to get as many people as I can to not buy from that despicable company. I have been to many FABS across the world and I absolutely despise Apple's work practices.
The Intel 5000 series I was referring to was the Broadwell series of Intel CPUs and not whatever you think I said.

Oh and I'll attack whichever I products I like and I don't need someone who knows less than me about computer hardware to tell me otherwise.

OP if you're reading this then just go into any major retailer and have a look at their 2015 releases.

        • @tendollar: Well I only have a prepaid Visa card which you can only use online, you can't use it within stores.

        • @WestSide:

Honestly man there are literally hundreds of laptops around that price. This is a good deal, though.

If you want good battery life then you need to go for an ultrabook.

        • @tendollar:

Again, you are entitled to your own opinion. Won't argue with that. However, "I don't need someone who knows less than me about computer hardware to tell me otherwise." is a blatant claim, once again in accordance with what I have said in the first post. What is there to say that you are any more knowledgeable about computers than I am?

Smart remarks don't get you anywhere. Again, you meant 5th generation. "5000 series" does not exist in regards to chipsets. It is only in reference to the graphics cards with the chipset.

OP, try for a refurbished Dell Latitude 7000 series. Similar to the Inspiron 15 that tendollar recommended; but in an ultrabook form factor with much better build quality. Also doesn't suffer from the underside heating problems which the the '14 15" model suffers from.

      • Macbook Airs will go around the $900 range when on sale; they occasionally pop up around here and there for that price. Refurbished and second hand allows you to go much below that.

  • What are you planning on doing on this computer??

    • Work and assignments, and for personal use at home like watching videos and games, but mostly work. And my family can use it too.

      • So internet browser ,VLC and word. What type of games do you plan to play?

        • Just some online games, not too many.

  • my son has a mac air. I dont like mac os but he thinks its fine. Battery life lasts all school, its small, its light, and its tough - been dropped plenty of times.
    Get a second hand 13inch with 128SSD.

    or a refurb Dell

I have bought one of their refurbs, was like new, never had a problem. i wouldnt hesitate buying another that was an Inspiron 15 5000.

  • $900 will get you a nice ultrabook.

  • I'd honestly recommend a Mac for school. You can get refurbished ones for under $900 in good-condition. I use one for school and it's tough and reliable. Battery life is great and it loads everything pretty quickly. Even if you're a Windows fan just load Windows on it via Bootcamp but the build quality of these laptops are amazing and have outlasted all the plastic Ultrabooks other students bought which have cracked, snapped and failed time and time again due to poor build quality. Certainly not an Apple fanboy, I only talk from experience. :)

Macbook Air fits your requirement perfectly. Its tough, has great battery life and has the fastest program loading you can get for under $2000 courtesy of its PCIe SSD. You may need to go over $900 to get a 13" one though.

Failing that, get a Dell Latitude from the Dell Outlet. I recommend Latitude 12 or 14, 7000 series.
