I am currently on a trial of Bitdefender Mobile Security and noticed last night (when I checked to see how many days left I have) that the app was offering me a buy 1 year, get another year for free subscription. 2 years for AU$14.95
I know that free subscription codes do come up for this, but thought I would post anyway. Maybe free codes will extend this subscription out even further?

If it's capable of running an app then it's capable of getting a virus
If you stick to google play, then there is absolutely no reason for an AV. If you use other means, I would suggest AVL pro, they have an inbuilt function that decontruct an app and you can see whether it's safe or not (they have their own database).eg, I downloaded whatsapp from other methods, and found it had some issues.
Plus most of the functions in these AV apps (backup, antitheft) are already inbuilt through the android system.
Another good AV that's light on the system is line antivirus and bitdefender antivirus free
Considering how often they throw around free subs I think it might be hard to convince people to pay for one.
