  • "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get."
    Forrest Gump's Mum

    • I don't know what kind of boxes of chocolates they have in the Southern United States, but every one I've come across in Australia has made the distinction between different chocolates abundantly clear.

      • +2

In my house when i get a box of chocolates, by the time i get any, i always know what i'm going to get. The horrible nut ones that no one else wants!

        • The horrible nut ones that no one else wants!

Well at least that applies to your chocolates and not your parents. :)

        • @Scrooge McDuck: Ha! Oops.

      • actually that quote is paying homage to Norwegian Wood - a novel by Japanese by Haruki Murakami. interesting story and it captures what the writers of Forrest Gump where trying to get across with regards to Forrest's character.

  • +5

If you always do what you always did, you always get what you always got.

  • +6

"You say it best, when you say nothing at all."

    • most polite way to say STFU

  • “He is able who thinks he is able” - Buddha

  • +3

Unless one is able to live fully in the present, the future is a hoax - Alan Watts

  • Make hay while the sun shines.

    • But Hay is 723 km from Sydney so what time would I have to start driving to make hay while the sun shines ?

      • about 8 hours depending on traffic. So you could leave by 10am and still make it while the sun shines, but probably best to leave earlier.

  • I got two of them (not necessarily positive/success motto) that I thought was nice and quite true.

    1. Life is what happens to you when you are busy making other plans - John Lennon
    2. Love is when a person hurts you and though you try to hurt them in return, you can't coz hurting them would hurt you.

The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.

    Reinhold Niebuhr

  • There are two kinds of people, those that do the work and those that take the credit.

    • I hope you understand that it's the latter who get ahead in the world.

      • I have been in this situation before and most definitely agree with the latter.

  • +3

Pride is the worst value a man can have.

Read The Art Of War or Way to Wealth.

A proud man is the easiest to defeat and deceive.

I have read the below probably 15 to 20 years ago and it has stuck to me like no other. I thinks it's from Tolstoy.

    "Humans are fractions.
The numerator is what one is and the denominator is what one thinks of oneself.
The larger the denominator, the smaller the fraction."

Another one that I remind myself in tough situations is:

"Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger".

These two have helped me a lot to keep up my sanity!

    • "Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger".

Would a crippling medical condition make you stronger?

      • Depends on what your definition of strength is. I'd say yes, mentally.

        • I'd say yes, mentally.

But not nearly enough to outweigh the loss of physical strength, otherwise wouldn't you intentionally give yourself a crippling injury?

Does PTSD make one mentally stronger?

A psychologist walked around a room while teaching stress management to an audience. As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they'd be asked the "half empty or half full" question. Instead, with a smile on her face, she inquired: "How heavy is this glass of water?" Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz. She replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm will feel numb and paralyzed. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn't change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes." She continued, "The stresses and worries in life are like that glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer and they begin to hurt. And if you think about them all day long, you will feel paralyzed – incapable of doing anything." It’s important to remember to let go of your stresses. As early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don't carry them through the evening and into the night. Remember to put the glass down!
