    Too expensive!

  • Down to $41.65 for two people with coupon, thanks OP!

  • +2

plus 5.6% rebate with cash rewards

  • So its 40 now?

  • +1

Buffets on the whole are way too expensive for the average people for the quality of food you get. For 45 bucks most people can get a really good feed from a good restaurant.

    • +3

Obviously you haven't been to Chinabar should try it once

      • +5

Been to them more than enough times that I'd like. Obviously better than the crud you get at the likes of Food Star, but nothing to write home about. While there is variety, the quality isn't that stellar.

      • +1

I've been to the one in Burwood 3 or 4 times, it's terrible.
Much better feed for the money up the road at Persian Flavours (very good and stupid cheap) or down the road at Glen Waverley.

        • Why do you keep going there if it's terrible? You'll think you'll stop going after one or two times max.

        • +1

          @aaronbaron:
Family commitments, after the second time I didn't want to go back but unfortunately my relatives' eyes expand at the sound of "all you can eat"

  • +1

thanks op. my friend and I can eat at least 8 dozens oysters together. So $88 can cover the cost and we can enjoy some other seafoods plus asian food.

    Great value to us

    • duuuuuudddeeeee

Wow, so wrong on so many levels…

        *So Wong on many levels

        • +5

why must you use italian accent on it?

    • that is a lot of oysters!

    • yeah I had about that last week!

    • Oyester lover too, what oyster is in CHinabar? pacific, SA or TAS?

      • Does it matter?

        • He wants to know pacifically

anyone who wants to experience a good quality buffet experience should go to the Melba at the Langham Hotel atleast once in their life. It is arguably the best buffet restaurant in Melbourne. While prices are not cheap, it is completely worth it. Lunch prices are around $55pp while dinner prices are around $85pp. The entertainment book and red energy member booklets have vouchers offering $40-$45 off the bill. Highly recommended! I would rather take my business to the Melba restaurant than the superficial China Bar.

    • +1

True, Melba and Conservatory will be more up-class than China Bar. But for the price, China Bar's offering is great.

    • +6

I've been to both and although Melba is miles ahead of China Bar signature I still think it's worth going to, especially for this price. Melba is $85 on monday to Thursday only, then on weekends is between $99-$109, and is the higher price every day in November and December.. the price difference would definitely add up to a lot if you were going with a few people.

But man, Going to Buffets in Vegas has ruined me haha, the Wynn and Bellagio buffets were like double the size of Melba and less than half the price, which included unlimited drinks :( I was spoilt when the dollar was above parity.

      • Yeah, the food and variety at the buffets in Vegas are generally much better. Bacchanal was my favourite by a mile - amazing food especially for a buffet.

However, service absolutely sucks in buffets over there even with tipping up front at buffets. Service at Melba and Conservatory is much better since they're not ridiculously understaffed unlike Bacchanal or others.

Atmosphere at Conservatory also blows away other Vegas buffets too, which look tacky at best!

        • I didn't go to Bacchanal, but looking at the photos of the food it's definitely on my list to try next time, looks like they have some really delicious and unique items.

I personally found the service at Wynn excellent, they took our plates away the second we were finished and never let our glasses get empty. Bellagio was lacking a bit however.

Conservatory is indeed lovely, I do prefer the food at Melba though and would probably pay the extra to eat there for that reason.

Going to Thailand later this year so hopefully can try out some more amazing buffets there!

      • +1 for the Wynn buffet. That was pretty much the only reason why I was there.

        • I want to go back there, but I can't justify it right now with everything being 30% more expensive :( it's okay though, going to Thailand in October, plenty of amazing food to pig out on there too!

The Wynn buffet was incredible though, it's the first buffet i've been to where I really had to think carefully about what I wanted to eat, I had a tiny sample of a tonne of different foods and still didn't get to try a lot of others as I was too full. Heh, the table next to us was just 2 guys eating absolutely nothing but plate after plate of crabs legs. They must have had about 50 each. I think it only cost us $40 or so

    • Agreed, Melba and Conservatory are in a totally different league to china bar.
I would rather go to those 2 over china bar, even if they are double the price.
Much better service - the service at china bar is rude & abrupt, not suitable for any restaurant other than cheap & cheerful asian restaurants that i frequent.

      • At over a hundred pp, that's fine dining price, I'd rather go to a nice restaurant and relax than have to fight off the throngs of people for the crab legs

        • Either you are exaggerating or have not been Melba and Conservatory. Of the countless times we've been there neither of the places have people lining up to grab food. The service to fill up empty glasses, drinks and takeaway the plates is always been very prompt. Cant say that about Chinabar. Though i do agree $100pp is prohibitively expensive, thats probably why we only go there for lunch on the entertainment vouchers.

        • yeah Melba's weekday lunch prices are great for $55 per person and includes almost the same variety and quantity of food as the dinner and both lunch and dinner have fabulous seafood offerings. Though dinner offers the opportunity to take in beautiful night views of city skyline. Entertainment book voucher and red energy member booklet voucher saves me $90 in total over 2 visits. Personally I prefer Melba over Conservatory since I feel the quality of food is far superior. Melba's excellent service and good seating arrangements are just toppings on the cake.

      • wow! why would you care about service in a self service buffet?? LOL i can agree about the dinning atmosphere of Conservatory been up there with the best but i wouldn't give 2 rats about service in a all you can eat buffet environment which is SELF SERVE anyway. China bar has more variety than Conservatory while Conservatory has slightly better quality. as long as they take away the stacked plates once in a while i'm happy.

        • +2

Because a good buffet can be casual and relaxing. Self service lets you eat at a your pace and whatever that takes your fancy at that moment in time.
Not all buffets are about pigging out and eating as much as possible.

china bar's target market is probably just those who care about quantity and not service.

        • -1

@chir0nex: right. you can still get what you listed above from a fine dinning restaurants with better service and food than Conservatory/Melba at $100+ per head. Most people go to buffets for a big fill and fine dinning restaurants for service and quality.

Complaining specifically about service in a buffet setting is like complaining that KFC should serve more healthy foods while providing a better dinning atmosphere for eat ins with plates and solid cutlery.

        • +1

@Creamsoda: So you're china bar's target market. Crap service, cheap food.

You can do more chatting and be more social at a buffet. As I said, its more casual and more relaxing than fine dining where the environment is dimmer and more hush.

So you don't understand buffets with nicer environment and service, doesn't mean everyone who goes to them doesn't care about how they're treated.

      • Melba > Conservatory.

        • Tried Melba on Wed night, not impressed.

It has less options than Chinabar.

        • @baoluo:

True, Chinabar has a big range of chinese food.
They also cramb tables in and are understaffed, leading to terrible service and attitude.

Chinabar for a cheap and satisfying feed, for sure.

My birthday is coming up and I have 5 people in my family. What to do? D:

    • +2

…well. I would go to each family member individually and tell them about this offer. Getting the hint, the four other members of your family then each buy a voucher and invite you as their guest to celebrate your birthday. They'll all feel good about getting a good deal, and you'll get go to ChinaBar four times~

      • Arrange it all n the same day, and you can eat 4x as much!

    • +2

      Drop the weakest link.

    • As its your birthday, You get to go for free. The condition is that you need to bring 3 guests along.

  • +1

With these "groupon" deals, normally you have to book and mention you have a 'groupon'.

    Any condition like that here?

I can't see to find it, it just says "Reservations required and subject to availability" so implies a regular online booking is OK and can just present this voucher upon arrival?

      • Tried booking online using the above code, doesn't seem to be working…maybe blocked for certain dates? Tried a Sunday 26/7

Also tried a few other random weekdays, still not working - might have to call.

  • Bought 2, tks OP!

  • this is devastating. finally went with 2 friends last Friday after agonising about the cost and believing it had never been on ozbargain before. luckily I love food so really liked it and had a lot. my friends didn't though, so this is pretty bad timing!

  • When I buy a ticket, it says I need to put the location I intend to go, I was under the assumption I could rock up to any of the 3 locations…?

  • I used to visit the China Bar outlet in the Chadstone food court regularly… Until the Target redevelopment closed that entire section of the centre :-\

  • We bought this deal last time, twice, after the first time you'll be over it. We went to the city one btw.

  • I put in the LIVSOC promo code in the online reservation box but it said invalid promo code? Was there a specific way to may a booking or do you just make a reservation and bring the voucher on the day?

    • It isn't valid until the 13th of July

      • Stupid question, but does this mean I can't make a booking until the 13th of July? I assumed this meant I couldn't use the coupon until after then.

        • You need the voucher number to make the reservation, and the promo code to buy the voucher! Lolx..

        • @Clementt: On the livingsocial voucher it says "4) Be sure to mention LIVSOC in the Promotional Code field" so I did this rather than the voucher number. May try using the voucher number. Thanks

        • @dan1985:

Did the voucher number work? I tried all the options, LIVSOC/voucher number and they both don't work and give error code saying promotion code not valid.

        • @3rdEarth: Still nothing for me. I'm going to call.

        • @dan1985:

Called up and they just said book and in the comments section mention the "livingsoical" promo and bring the voucher on the day.

        • @3rdEarth: Thanks, I tried it again and it worked! All booked in for 5.30pm so I can get at the good stuff before anyone else - lol

  • I just worry about 'Drinks not included'.

For sure they provides water - but any buffet dish that can resemble nice watery dessert?

  • I've been to China Bar- Burwood east several for office events & it surprising quite good for buffet food. Saturday nite is the best time to visit. Of course, you'll need to book in advance

  • I want to buy 2 vouchers for my family, but I can only choose 1 for me and 1 as a gift
Does anyone know if we can use these 2 different vouchers at the same time (one booking)?

    • It shouldn't be a problem.. Gift can be for a family friend that was invited to the lunch or dinner.

    • yes max two vouchers per booking

  • How can i claim cash rewards ? Can anyone help! Thank heaps.

      1. go to cashrewards.com.au and sign up for an account
      2. search for livingsocial on cashrewards website and click on link to go to livingsocial website
      • but i already bought my voucher through livingsocial website, can i still claim cashrewards after the purchased ? Thanks

  • I hope lunch is valid on saturdays and sundays… is it??

  • Misses and I have been twice and both times it was 'good' not 'great'. It wasnt cheap and especially if you factor in a few beers/drinks on top. The Peking duck was the best thing, while desserts were a huge disappointment. Id say go for it at this price - just dont expect the best quality.

  • Where to put the coupon provided?

    • nvm.. found " add a promo code" link at the bottom

  • I'm allergic to sea food. Do they have a lot of chicken and other variety foods available?

    • Yes they do

  • Anyone know if they have seafood and oysters for lunch? Never been there for lunch before..

  • only epping left :(
