Hey guys,

This camera is making quite a headway. It's the younger brother of Samsung's NX1 DSLR that uses the same 28MP sensor.

JB Hifi is selling this for $699 for the body alone or $999 with the 16-50mm kit lens.

Features of Samsung NX500 28MP Kit (16-50mm) Mirrorless Digital Camera :

  • 28.2MP BSI APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • DRIMe V Image Signal Processor
  • 4K HEVC Video Recording at 24 fps
  • 3.0" 1036k-Dot Tilt-Touchscreen Monitor
  • NX Autofocus System III & Auto Shot Mode
  • 205 Phase-Detection AF Points
  • Up to 9 fps Shooting and ISO 51200
  • Dual Command Dials & Hybrid UI
  • ED-SEF8A Flash & Built-In Wi-Fi

Here is a youtube review for those that are interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kk4_GkSMjxo

Please keep in mind it does not have a built in EVF (Electronic View Finder), but your smartphone can link to the camera and act as a remote electronic view finder and remote control.

Hope this helps someone out :)

I don't even bother with becextech at all on principle.

  • So as far as cameras go, does a general consumer need a camera this good? Or could we look at a lower model say NX3000 and still have impressive shots?

    • +1

I will tell you a secret, impressive shots come from Adobe Lightroom. The main advantage of the 500 is the 4K video (good for getting stills from the video so you don't miss the shot), it has a really nice sensor at 28MP but that increases the risk of blurred shots. EVF is no big loss, I don't have one on NX300M and I don't miss it. As a general user you won't be using the 1/6000 shutter speed and 51,200 ISO is a gimmick, the photos are so grainy they are useless (just because it has it doesn't mean you should use it).

In short, IMO if you don't want the 4K video you are better off buying a 3000/300M (I prefer 300M) and putting the rest into a nice prime lens.

      • I like the idea of stills from a video. So for this to be worthwhile you would need 4K.. A standard 1080P video would be too low quality?

        • +2

No no, you can still get decent stills from 1080 it just depends what you want to do with them. Think of it as if you take a still from a 1080 video (1920x1080) the image is 2.1 megapixels, but if you took one from a 4K video (3840x2160) then the still image will be 8.3 megapixels. So whilst the framing of the image would be identical as it's done with the lens, you will have a lot more detail in the 4K still and have the benefit of larger prints if that's your goal, you will also keep more detail if you crop out the subject. Just remember that if you're using it for video you'll be in a wide angle ratio and you'll need to invest in a fast SD card.

You can see the difference in size below, the 4K still can be printed around twice the size of the 1080. If you just want to view it on a standard laptop or phone then it really won't make a lot of difference.

          1080 - http://web.forret.com/tools/dpi.asp?width=1920&height=1080
          4K - http://web.forret.com/tools/dpi.asp?width=3840&height=2160

The connectivity and tech is pretty leading edge going into this camera.

I was set on a Panasonic LX100 but ended up getting a NX500 with this 16-50 wide angle lens and the 50-200 zoom.

Two different cameras but I did not want to be short changed on the power of the zoom after my LX3.

I shoot wide angle for 90% of the time but the other 10% not having zoom was a total pain in the ass.

    Loved my LX3 tho.

Prior to purchase from either this store or the sister companies (one mentioned by Spackbace & Blahman) known for sockpuppeting in media like Ozbargain and such, have a read on Consumer Affairs, Testimony of former disappointed customers, & More to understand what kind of business the owner is running in Australia.

    • i c……

      are they grey import?

      • You must be very lucky to have received a grey import stock than what most shoppers did, which are potentially repaired, refurbished, used or defective stocks. The owner himself is the boss, customer service, warehouse stockist, and refund department. So be aware of malpractice.

  • No EVF I would avoid.

    • Why? Some people prefer to not have it. Its not a reason alone to avoid. But yeah I am not going to buy Samsung till they get more lenses.
