  • Few cents cheaper than your last post https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/155610

That's not a variable temp iron though… Though I guess if you're working with the grade of solder that matches the heat output of the iron it wouldn't be too bad… definitely wouldn't recommend trying anything lead free with a plug and go though

  • Out of stock… Soldering iron that is
Anyone know a good deal on a weller?

This is bulls—t. I specifically checked postcodes 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000 & 6000 before posting and there was stock in in every store for C&C. Now dick pulls a curly one coz he thinks he may be selling them too cheap, or maybe because he didn't want the coupon applied to this product in the first place. Seriously, this store needs to get its act into gear and stop taking people for a ride. What a joke they've become. Rant over.

  • Forget that soldering station, you can get a good one that is pretty much equal from hobbyking for half the price.

I've owned all three of the Hobby King, Dick Smith and Hakko FX-888D stations. The Hobby King unit is a bit tacky but it gets the job done if you're not a demanding user. The DS station is a bit more solid and is better for regular/frequent use as it has a cooler grip and takes up less bench space with its integrated holder. The Hakko unit is awesome if you can afford it and need to use an iron for more than an hour a day.

I use the T2200 all the time, mostly for retro console repairs or guitar projects. Quick to heat, variable temperature and easy to use. It's a solid unit! My only complaint is the cord from the station to the iron is a bit stiff and takes a little while to loosen up. Highly recommend it though if you can score it for that price.

If you need tips for the Dick Smith soldering iron you can get them from ebay seller wonderco_buy. He has a variety of styles to choose from and will do a special mix if you ask. Check out the selection chart in the listing. The iron is made in Taiwan by Xytronic. The seller is in Taiwan so these could be genuine tips. Suggest you order at least three tips to spread the postage cost.
