Tasting Notes
This superb red is produced by McGuigan Wines – a 5 Star James Halliday Rated Winery located in the Hunter Valley. Aromas of dark cherries, blackberries and a hint of cinnamon and vanilla waft from this rich red. The juicy berry flavours carry onto the palate and are complemented beautifully by a subtle oak structure. A full flavoured wine with a smooth finish.

Australia-Wide Delivery
Bootleg Liquor will get this wine to you within 7 to 10 business days. Please allow a little longer for rural and remote areas.

  • Thanks DJR9000 - yes, that was a typo. This is a lovely Cabernet Sauvignon.

    Premium? ! ha.
The McGuigan family long ago sold out to the corporations, and now comes from the same vats as Passion Pop.

Despite what the linked page says, this is NOT a Hunter Valley wine . (The bottle just says SE Australia)

    • Well it is being sold at a place called "bootleg", did you expect genuine hunter valley wine? :)

Note: the site you linked says the winery is Pokolbin, which is hunter valley.

      • The company sources grapes from all over SE Australia for their brands.
You don't think all those mega-litres of McGuigan -labelled bottles actually come from the McGuigan winery?

  • I love some McGuigan and have visited their Cellar Door on numerous occasions, but haven't gotten to try this variety. I'm curious, but CabSav isn't my favourite right now so I'll pass for the time being.

As noted, this is from 'South Eastern Australia' wineries, not specifically HV. Blends are pretty normal for inexpensive wine. No big deal there to me.

Here are the tasting notes and more information from McGuigan itself. Original price was $12/bottle, so this looks to be a good deal…if the wine is decent. :)

    Thanks for your feedback Manic.

Yep, it’s true. McGuigan Wines became a public listed company in 2008 under the banner of Australian Vintage. We do know that vigneron, Brian McGuigan is still heavily involved in the business.

McGuigan Wines is an iconic Hunter Valley Winery, and James Halliday continues to give these guys 5 Stars. We’ve edited our website to highlight that the grapes for this wine are sourced from South Eastern Australia (SEA). Apologies if this wasn't clear.

Quick fact - the number one selling wine in the country is McGuigan’s Black Label Red, which also uses SEA fruit.

For $4.66 a bottle we reckon this red is awesome value!

    • Thanks for the response.
The old black label is decent cheap booze. Great value. I just take issue with it being presented as a Premium Hunter Valley wine.

I will say that budget Australian wines are far superior to the Vin de Table from France, let alone the Spanish and Italian bilge water.

then again, this is the same company that makes Passion Pop. :)

Please remove "Australia-Wide Delivery" from the post.

I suffered from being misled by Bootleg Liquor in the past. They happily took my money; almost a month to get a refund, then only because I complained about not having received my delivery.

They do have a FAQ http://btlg.com.au/faq which contradicts the very prominent delivery policy, but hey, who reads the FAQ when every page of the website says 'Australia-Wide Delivery'.

"Which areas do you deliver to?

We deliver our booze right across Australia.

Legally we are not allowed to deliver to some areas, the Northern Territory is ‘dry’ for instance. Also there are a few remote locations we just can’t get to. Please take a look at the ‘no go’ areas at the link below for specific postcodes we don’t deliver to."

The whole of the Northern Territory (including Darwin) is 'dry' according to this lot. Fancy that! It's a while since I've been to Darwin, things must have changed a bit since then.

    • Hmm, don't like replying to my own posts, but it still says "Australia-Wide Delivery".

      Time for a downvote.

  • Hi Its4Me,

    Apologies for the delayed reply.

Yep, unfortunately there are some remote areas in Australia that we can't deliver our alcohol to, and yes there are places within the Northern Territory where you can consume liquor.

For your reference we use Fastway Couriers because we can charge our customers a flat $6.95 delivery fee, which we feel is affordable. On the downside they won't drive alcohol through 'dry areas' and given that our warehouse is in Sydney, it makes things pretty tricky.

We get that the low delivery fee is of no help to you and we're sorry about that. We've had a poke around and Dan Murphy's is now delivering to some Darwin postcodes. There are a few restrictions in place and they charge $19 per case but they can get it in.

We are going to leave Australia-Wide Delivery up on our website because we do highlight the remote areas we can't get to - http://btlg.com.au/faq/

Its4Me, would you mind dropping us an email regarding the refund issue? Did you purchase the alcohol directly from www.btlg.com.au or from another deal or the day website? Having to wait a month for a refund is totally unacceptable and we will investigate this.

My email address is [email protected] if you would like to drop me a line.

Again I'm very sorry for the inconvenience.

    • Some of your "remote" areas are outer suburbs of Perth, such a two Rocks or Sawyers valley.
Arguably not metro, but certainly NOT remote. (60xx and 61xx postcodes are Perth.)

    • Hi BootlegLiquor,

I've forwarded email correspondence I had with your company from last month to you.

I still don't think that it's a good idea to advertise Australia-Wide delivery when you have so many exclusions. Relying on a couple of paragraphs in a FAQ isn't good enough. Who reads the FAQ when the order goes through the system.

At the very least you should fix your ordering system so you don't process orders from areas you won't deliver to.

I just mentioned Darwin as an amusing example of a 'dry' area from your FAQ; as manic mentions above you don't deliver to some Perth suburbs either.

  • I thought I'd just point out that I'm currently halfway through my first bottle of this red and it's bloody great! This is definitely a $12-$15 quality red (in my opinion) - wish I had grabbed a couple more dozen while the voucher was valid!

    • Hey CamTheSnapper,

Thanks for the feedback! We reckon it's a bloody great drop too.

      Glad you're enjoying it.

We will do our best to keep the ripper red deals coming!

      Cheers,
      The Bootleggers

    • Hey again CamTheSnapper,

If you are keen to get your hands on a couple more cases of McGuigan's feel free to email [email protected] and he'll sort something special out for you.

      Cheers,
      The Bootleggers
