Went looking for a new AV Receiver found what I thought was a decent price for risking import. Total comes to about $1280 AUD including shipping and import duties (Amazon.de charges the import duty at checkout). Selling locally for over $2000 AUD.
VAT Tax comes off the listed EUR 799.90 at checkout to EUR 672.19

  • No international warranty. Big saving and big gamble.

I took the risk with a Denon AVR-1612 from Amazon.de in the past at >50% saving over AU pricing.
Mine has been running fine now for 3 years (touch wood).

My thinking was that if it failed then the repair or replacement cost again would still be cheaper than paying full price locally.

      • i did the same with an onkyo. Sadly, it was a model with a common and widespread fault which rendered it a paperweight. Luckily, i have family in the UK so i sent it back with him on the last visit to return to onkyo for me and i'll get it back in 2 months time. Pain in the ass but i had my old kenwood to use in the mean time

Most common issues with AV receivers are not expensive to fix. Not a problem. I mean, you could get a lemon but a receiver is all pretty simple internally.

There really shouldn't be any duty on this item as it's under $1000 AUD for the item cost alone. Shipping shouldn't be used to calculate duty value.

      Key point translated:
"If the advance payment of the import charge exceed the actually paid import duties, please contact Amazon.de a reimbursement of the difference."

So by all rights you should be able to contact them after you've received it and get your 77.89€ refunded.

They're probably using their rip off Amazon conversion rate which may be putting it a shade over $1K

Don't forget to ensure their price subtracts the 20% VAT EURO tax! If it doesn't, contact Amazon support!

  • Would the text on the display be in German? Is it switchable? Achtung!

    • +1

Nein … sollte kein Problem sein … der Text auf dem Display des Receivers ist immer englisch … sogar in der deutschen Variante :-)

      • Danke

      • Such a romantic language

        • Haha … it is! Nicht!

On a serious note: you should have no problem with German on the Display … I haven't seen any "German" on a receiver … all the terms are english even on a german receiver.

  • Text is in English. Bought the AVR-X3100W for AUD$864 incl delivery a couple of months ago.

Took seven weeks to arrive as it went missing between Amazon and UPS i-Parcel, so Amazon.de shipped a replacement. Looks like the 3100 is no longer available for shipping to Aust.

BTW, use Chrome to translate Amazon.de webpages, much easier than pasting into Google Translate.

    Thank you for contacting Amazon.de.

I checked your potential order: Denon AVR-X4100W 7.2 Surround-AV-Receiver (WLAN, Spotify Connect, 4K, Denon Link HD, Dolby Atmos, Auro-3D ready, 3HDMI out, 200 Watt) schwarz And see that the german VAT of 19% has been excluded.

There is however an import fee for items imported to Australia. This an estimated amount to have your parcel cleared through customs.
Should the amount payable be less, you will be refunded.

As you might know, orders that are shipped to countries outside of Germany may be subject to import taxes, customs duties and fees levied by the destination country ("Import Fees" - "Importgebühren"). For your convenience, when we use AmazonGlobal Express Shipping to eligible countries, Amazon EU Sarl will estimate and collect an Import Fees Deposit, and such funds will be used by the carrier to pay the Import Fees on your behalf (or on the recipient's behalf) to the appropriate authorities of the destination country.

You can see the amount of the deposit at the end of the order process on the order form.

You can find some more information regarding the deposit of import duties below.

I hope this information has been helpful to you.

Thanks OP. Been wanting to buy a decent receiver for a while and this price has made me take the plunge. What speakers/sub you guys using/going to use with this?
