      • Thank you sir.

Service Packs are no longer used, so you'll be waiting awhile

        • @oak:I'm ok with this

  • I haven't got the notification yet. I have genuine Windows 8 laptop. What do I do to get it?

    • There's Windows update. The reservation application comes through as a optional update which you can install. code is kb3035583

You must install all pre-requisite updates first before it appears. It will not be available if you are using Windows Enterprise edition.

Have the tester version downloaded a few weeks ago… never found time to install it… not thinking to upgrade anytime soon…

  • -1

Do you really want to be a beta tester ? it takes at least 12 months for any new version of windows to become stable, usually 2-3 years, sometimes like in windows 95 and 2000's case, never.

    • +2

Windows 2000 was actually excellent. Basically XP with a few less features. You might be thinking of Windows ME.

      • thank you. Someone who knows their history. Win2k was their first great OS.

        • not windows 2000 pro, i meant windows 2000 me. Ie millenium edition.

  • hell no, 50cent uses a mac

    • The bait is too damn strong here.
      Swagity Swigity YOLO

  • Got blue screen quite frequently , might consider to format and change to Windows 10
    Anyone have the same problem?

I reckon it's because I OC 8350 to 4.5 gHz without changing it to normal clock rate :(

    • Your OC is not stable, so try to be a little more conservative.

I would be running Prime95 for a few hours after making OC tweaks to check for stability. Once you have settled on a clock speed you're happy with I would be testing again for at least 12 hours.

      http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/39979-how-long-should-i-…

      • Thanks for the advice scrimshaw,

I did the benchmark using Prime95 (based on JayZ2cents video) for 6 hours and do 1 hours benchmark daily for 1 week after that and it was ok.
After 2 months or so , my computer crash quite frequently with that blue screen. I'm not sure it occured that way because I rarely shut down my PC at all or maybe because I install new chinese torrent software

My mobo is asus m5a99fx pro r2.0, I think it should be sufficient enough to OC
Anyway , thank you for the advice , will reset the OC to 4.0 see if it crash or not

      • It worked like a charm , thanks to your expertise.
Funny things is when I launch Chinese Torrent Software , it strreit away crash

        • OCCT using the Linpack tab tends to find bad overclocks quicker than Prime95.

OS upgrades are always a worry for gamers. If you visit Steam or GoG listings for older games, you see lots of reports with games not working for Windows 8.

  • I have my laptop I use for work on the RTM version already as well as my wifes laptop and a spare old Macbook.
My main desktop is reserved as well as my old PC I use for media streaming and an old clunker I have as a muck around has it reserved too.
My daughters Dualboot tablet also has the upgrade reserved so will be a mass download on my internet on the 30th!

I also have an old Win 7 machine I may install it on too.

On the laptops the RTM is already running on, it is very stable and I am impressed with it, hoping the other machines have as smooth a ride too once they update.

  • Been running it as a VM on our Hyper-V cluster and it's been a treat. I've had it on an earlier build on a Thinkpad T550 (slipstream from WDS, which was awesome), but lots of BSOD early on.
I'll wait a couple weeks before I upgrade my Elitepad 1000 to v10, mainly to do with not wanting to take a buggy tablet with me to Europe for a month.

  • I'm in no hurry. Rather see what actually happens to others before I jump, if I jump. Check the user reviews after a while in the wild.

  • Can't even upgrade to 8.1 from 8 on my windows tablet.

    • Want to elaborate or given up?

Working on an 8 machine after using 8.1 always pisses me off so there's definite benefit to 8.1.

Could be something simple (I'm a technician and curious).

      • I think it said "This app wasn't installed". Not sure if it meant that it couldn't install 8.1 or it couldn't find the 8.0 to install over.

  • Dont really care much for the operating environment, I dislike having to be in windows because that means something is broken. I preffer to just go straight to the application that I need to use. Once its full screen im in that environment not the os so it doesnt matter if its windows, linux, OS2, or macos. The operating system is a bridge… to entertainment. I must say all operating systems are as exciting as the flashing dos prompt of yester year. The real fun begins after the OS.
So as long as whatever starts after the os, works, I dont see the need to upgrade.

  • -3

I dont think they can make it any worse than 8..oh wait…

    • if you installed ClassicShell, windows 8 was fantastic. You shouldn't have had to, but … It was otherwise very good. Vista, on the other hand, was terrible. I reinstalled 3 times in 6 months. It crashed daily. My wife finally said "enough" after I went from no cursing to saying (profanity) every day, almost constantly. She said 6 months of bad language and a rubbish OS was enough … I had nothing to prove (well, according to her anyway). True story!

  • I've been a preview member since January 2015 and I love it so far. Definitely upgrading when it comes out.

  • +1

I'm going to give it a shot, but I'm not hopeful that my AMD/intel switchable graphics will work.

Going to make a disk image then go for it.

  • Already been using it for so long I can't remember how long

It's great best windows OS so far IMO

    Windows user since windows95

  • +1

well its the 29th but no windows 10 yet?

    • -2

It might shock you to learn that it's not the 29th in the US yet.

    • It's distributed in order, some will get it earlier than the other. I think it was server related decision.

  • +1

This seems like it couldn't possibly be true but… if you've reserved the Windows 10 upgrade does it install automatically (on home editions)?

I don't want to install it right now, I just thought I'd do the reserve thing.

But this morning I've got a failed attempt for the upgrade to install in my Windows Update log. Surely they don't try and install it in the background without getting user confirmation?

It seems like such a bad idea that it couldn't possibly be true. But there's that failed update attempt and I can't think of another explanation.

EDIT The only thing I can think is that this morning I opened the "Get Windows 10" app and looked at the system report. Maybe that registered as a failed attempt, for some reason?

    • i thinks its in the process of downloading the update, this may be an interesting read

    • Playing around clicking things in the app doesn't seem to cause it. Restarting the computer doesn't seem to cause it. But I've now got 3 failed upgrade attempts in the log with no notifications ever appearing on the screen.

I'm not too concerned 'cause I have a small SSD with no personal data as the system drive and the CDs/USBs etc. to do whatever I need to do, but it's weird.

      • Hasn't been a failed upgrade attempt for 8 hours now. Just those first three. Now nothing. Huh.

  • Has anyone started downloading their Win images yet?

If you have, you should notice a new directory in your system drive

    C:\$Windows.~BT

Has anyone worked out how to halt the download or prevent it from happening? I only need 1 PC to download it, the other Pc's in my home don't need to waste my internet bandwidth.

    • Maybe cancel the reservation if you've done that in windows update?

    • I'd like to know this as well (I'd rather not risk it with my main PC yet).

  • +1

Installing Windows 10 now (I know I said I might wait out, but it's just for my laptop).

    • has it let you get to the point of actually installing?

      • Yeap, it's on 91% right now.

      • +3

AND, it's done. Writing from MS Edge.

        • and how is it, many/any problems that you can tell?

        • +2

          @PVA:
Maybe he can't answer because his PC has rejected its new heart.

        • +1

@PVA: As far as I see, it's fairly decent. Edge don't work with some of the websites I visit, but I have Firefox as well (and W10 comes with IE as well). Some of the UI changes collide with the custom theme that I had for Firefox as well. For Windows tablet, at least, I don't think I can find anything that pisses me off yet.

That said, people who have not used a Windows Phone or never used metro UI and had Windows 7 will be lost for awhile I think (it might be because I am using Windows tablet for it though). They've implemented Metro UI style on many things, including setting (So all the control panel stuff is hidden, you need to find it). Also, they've changed the metro UI so that it's has some elements of Windows Phone style. I personally think it's better for new users, as the UI elements are not as all over the place as before (some Metro UI, some old Windows style, in short a complete mess), but it's a change. I personally think the UI feels more woven in with the metro UI (in a good way, where you could see that a human being with a functioning brain put at least some thoughts in user experience, which is a good change from Windows 8). That said, they could've made the control panel more accessible.

I can clearly see why this will piss off some people though.

I still need to use it for awhile before I can give anything definitive, who knows, 2 hours later, I might be complaining about BSODs or it opening a portal to another dimension or something. (I've not responded because I was off Ozbargain for a bit)

        • @AznMitch:

          thanks Mitch

Is this link Windows 10 preview or is preview the same version as the one rolling out today?

I got that above link from here, http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/preview-faq?ocid=…, which got when i clicked more support from the "failed to install windows 10" in update history.

  • +2

    have tested it extensively

it doesnt do anything better FOR ME, than windows 7 with chrome etc.

i kinda dont need the appstore or S&P indexes or the weather or a news.com stream right on my desktop

why you force this on me?

ie. right now on an i5 laptop with 4gb and 120gb ssd, smooth as on windows 7

    • +2

But but but, it's free and it's got Direct X 12!

I agree for most regular users who are set in the old ways would probably continue to use Windows 7 until the very day they decide to buy a new system and use whatever is included with their system. But upgrading definitely has more pluses than there are minuses.

However I wouldn't upgrade if you're in the middle of a big project and system stability is crucial. I'd probably just upgrade my HTPC and spare laptop first.

      • +1

yeah for a games machine or htpc or whatever… go for it, i'd even go as far as to say, sign up for the insider program

free o/s is free and if it goes bang, it aint the end of the world

but i strongly believe the o/s isnt that important in the scheme of things… an o/s is effectively middleware

you use it to support your hardware and your apps, the o/s doesnt actually do anything directly for you

to me, microsoft is always about selling the sizzle rather than the steak as far as windows goes

windows 10 is not something revolutionary, certainly it shouldnt be revolutionary when you're building on the mess of windows 8 but microsoft has to create that buzz every 3 years

i would love to be proven wrong with DX12… i hope its something really good but i doubt it, and really thats something more for nvidia and amd to sell me

    • people were saying exactly the same thing for XP.

eventually you will get win10 and be fine with it.

      • yes but not right now

i didnt give up XP until Windows 7 came around.

Windows 10 could well be Vista to me. Hell Windows 8 was Vista to me.

There's no impetus for me to move from Windows 7 unless Windows 7 becomes untenable and/or Windows 10 (or 11) is that awesome.

As it stands for 2015, I cant see moving to Windows 10 on my main machines… on a htpc or a throwaway machine yeah…

        • Pattern goes:
          Win 2000 followed by… Millenium
          Then XP followed by… Vista
          Then 7… followed by Vista8/8.1
          10!

        • @McFly: Millennium.. don;t remind me :(

        • @iChopstick: CEMENT?

        • +1

@AznMitch: as hard as a rock and dumb as a brick
          most definitely

          PS: No portal?

        • @iChopstick: Portal?

        • @AznMitch:

I might be complaining about BSODs or it opening a portal to another dimension or something

        • @iChopstick: hahahahahaha, no, it did crash twice during transition between tablet and laptop mode. That's about it. :P I am actually fairly surprised. I was expecting several BSODs at least (or at least a glimpse of hell while using it), but it is holding up rather fine (though since it is a Surface Pro 1, I don't think it's a massive feat).

Some of the metro apps probably would improve over time though, they are still technically a Windows 8.1 app (apparently).

  • what happened to windows 9?

      7 ate 9

      • there are 10 types of people

        *Smirk , Giggity Giggity Goo

    • Windows 9 is too close to Windows 95, 98 etc.
Plus MS want to align with the other OS versions.

      • Next weeks annoncement, Mac os XI

  • Well it seems most of you are getting your downloads.

Anyone who's still waiting for anything to happen? Like me?

5 machines here. None seem to be in the process of doing anything.

    Free genisys upgrade… I means windows 10

Must have wasted 30 gigs of download now, trying to force this to install. It keeps deleting itself 8Z

  • Is it possible to download the Windows 10 ISO?

  • Worked for me. Downloaded Windows 10 (32 & 64 bits) ISO and backed-up on DVDs before install.

  • Some people are reporting some gains in gaming performance in Windows's native DX12 API.

I'm going to do some benchmarks now and compare it to later when I upgrade to Windows 10.

  • I just updated three machines
One a desktop at work, tried a clean install but serial number I had for win 8 wouldn't work. It's running but not activated.

At home I updated a gigabyte tablet and a desktop PC previously both running 8.1PRo with different serial numbers.
After upgrading to Windows 10 I used a program to check the serial number installed on the machines to see if they have changed.
Both the serials on the tablet and desktop have changed, BUT they are both using the same serial number.

This can't be a good thing. I have 7 machines all up running either win 7 or 8.1 pro which I want to upgrade. Surely they can't all be using the same installed serial.

Gonna do a clean install now on the Desktop with the new Serial that got installed with Win10 to see if that will work.

    • Let me guess… 8N67H-M3CY9-QT7C4-2TR7M-TXYCV?

      • Nah mate starts with VK7JG.

just doing a clean install and the new serial number has been accepted and windows is getting files ready for installation as I type this.

        • +1

          Oh VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T.

        • @McFly:
          That's the one lol.

  • Has anyone encountered compatibility issues so far?

    • Yeah - Media Centre!

But seriously, tried it on an old (but stable) Dell (Vista) laptop and it all seemed fine, but would blue screen every so often.

  • still cant install it :((

    • How are you trying to install it?

You can download the ISO from Microsoft and either make a bootable USB and then update it or you can choose just to update.

      • I've downloaded from the website as well auto update download. I've tried the iso as well didnt work. Tried "media creation tool" which kinda worked until it told me windows 10 installation failed. :(((

Fix for the 80240020 error when trying to install Windows 10

      • Did it many times, still wont work. :(

  • DirectX 12 will support the double VRAM for SLI and Crossfire user. However The game should be able support to DirectX 12 in order to get this feature
Witcher 3 is DirectX 12 ready. So happy & rare to see developer that "polish" their game so well for customer and most importantly care about the gamers experience.
It's a Good news for gtx 970 sli user, it will make the BEST VALUE EVER for performance.

2x Gigabyte (preference) / MSI GTX 970 make beast performance with most reasonable price.
Quick warning: for you guys who plan to SLI 970 with FX 8350 , you will get averagely 15-40% bottleneck for performance.

So sad to see AMD fail to impress us with their "customer win" trait with their current Fury and R9 3xx series
Hope that AMD Zen CPU , 2016 next year able to knockdown the intel & nvidia for their monopoly price
