    • I cant imagine anyone buying TWO 970s and then wasting their potential with a AMD cpu

like why? get an i7 of some sort, you're already in the hole $900+ on gpus

      • IT's ABOUT VALUE , that's what we are here for in OZbargain! Value

  • +1

Updated it and loving it. Don't put it off. All my other programs are working just fine. Had to use " Media creation tool" as my upgrade to windows 10 icon disappeared this morning from task bar. Smooth installation and all good. No hardware conflicts on my 30 month old Toshiba P870.

  • Not sure how I'll survive without Media Centre. But the DirectX upgrade will force my hand.

    Anyone tried NextPVR?

    • +1

      Interested myself.
I have many PCs so most will be Windows 10 by the end of the day, but my home theater PC will be staying 8.1 until i find a live/record TV solution thats not totally shit and unstable.

      • Yeah, it looks ok from what I've seen.

Not that my tuner works on Windows 10 (well the preview build anyway). Could be something for you to test before you upgrade that machine.

Mine is still running Windows 7. As I didn't want to pay $100+ for a feature I'd had since 2005. (Why Media Centre became a Pro only option is still beyond me) But you may have more luck if you have a driver which works in 8.1. Though Microsoft might kill that too to give you more incentive to only use an XBoner for live TV.

  • OK, so I tried to do my son's laptop manually using the ISO, but after a very long "Upgrading" circle that went all the way to 93% last I looked, it has now restarted and says it's restoring my previous version of Windows.

Seeing as it's the first out of 5 laptops I wanted to do, this does not bode well at all.

SIGH, when will Microsoft ever get this shit 100% correct????

    • +1

At about "revision 3", or later, if ever. Good luck :)

  • Done and dusted. Automatic update failed twice.

Finally, used the tool here… http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

and now my laptop is running Windows 10.

  • Still not getting a prompt here. Had it reserved. Have tried forcing the update per various links instructions, but it doesn't do anything for me.

    • +1

Still not getting a prompt here.

Yeah, not getting it on any of my machines.

  • +1

Forced it on all three of my machines through either of these options:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
    https://www.reddit.com/r/windows/comments/3eyrre/fix_for_the…

Working really well - few smalls bugs but no major issues overall. Had to reinstall my graphics drivers on 1 PC after upgrade.

    • No major issues except the lack of Media Center you mean?

      • +4

Media Center is so outdated - haven't used it for years. I have a HTPC setup that I use Windows 10; works perfectly. Having said that I don't use a TV tuner ~ but then again I really don't have the need to record TV in 2015.

      • lol media center…
What are you, 50? Use better software.

  • (profanity) yeah!
My current system is working too well and am missing walking on the Edge!

    Chrome 4 eva, though!

    • Edge is really nice but needs a couple more features before it's there; after that I'm saying bye to Chrome for now.

      • Yea, just as fast as Chrome, but Chrome sync and its web extensions is why I'm sticking with Chrome.

  • Interesting; had the icon to register for free W10 sitting in tray for weeks and weeks. Registered.

The icon disappeared today, but no notification.

No matter, I suppose, I'm mostly 'nix anyway.

    • thats me too, didnt notice until I read your comment.
      It was there last night.

    • +1

Same here, but my Win7 Update control panel (Control Panel > System & Security > Windows Update) has an "Upgrade to Windows 10. Start installing the newest version of Windows now." section with [Get started] button.

  • I installed on both my macbook and desktop and it's been pretty good so far. Lack of apps in the store is disappointing but probably wouldn't be using them on a desktop pc anyway, and will be getting in time.

Gestures don't seem to be working on macbook and it says resolution is 2560x1600, but looks like 720p to me.

  • Anyone able to keep their old windows 7 after installing windows 10
by using a windows 7 image?

    • Make an image backup before you upgrade. It allows you to rollback within 30 days though.

      • I mean I want to keep both windows 7 and windows 10…

So I can install windows 7 or 10 on another pc etc..

        • +1

Ah got you. I think generally no. It's an upgrade, not an free extra license. But if you are using volume license then it's a different story.

        • @ITveteran:

It would be good if someone can test this.

I don't see why we can't have both os.

        • +1

          @tyler.durden:

Same reason they won't just give you an additional 5 copies for free…

        • @ozhunter:

well it's not confirm to not work yet.

Someone can test this out, would confirm this would work or not.

          ===

I have been using windows 10 insider preview for a while, and while it is better than windows 8

I would like to keep windows 7 around on another pc, since it is quite stable and has more supported signed drivers for older hardware especially some TV cards. It also has Media center which is now missing in windows 10.

        • @tyler.durden:

I'm willing to bet the Windows 7 copy would still activate if you have the original key.

        • @DrStinge: Is this confirmed anywhere? I want to know… don't want to lose access to my windows 7 HP retail just so I can try windows 10 for longer than 30 days.

  • +1

Tested today. Has found quite some issues including vpn support, ie bugs and trouble with store (ltsb edition). So for those prefer usability over curiosity, it is wise to hold and wait some more time.

    • +1

Even worse there is no more Media Centre.

  • +1

Good OS but 'too many' bugs. Needs a few more month polish.

  • +1

I have been using a clean install of Windows 10 Pro preview for a couple of months now on an old Vista PC as a test machine in order to determine whether or not to upgrade my current Windows 7 PC.

The only impressive thing about it for me is that it uses about half the amount of ram compared to Vista (ie. 1.5 GB compared to 3.0 GB on Vista).

I think on a modern PC it would work fine as it appears to be extremely CPU and HDD resources hungry, but with an older PC you may encounter problems such as overheating and possibly the issue I am encountering.

Certain people say that there is nothing wrong with automatic updates/features. That is true when it works correctly, but when it doesn't it's a PITA.

I have had nothing but frequent problems with my test PC due to the daily "Automatic Maintenance" feature.

This is because you are currently unable to "disable" it altogether and run it manually. You can't even change it from running "daily" to another cycle such as "weekly" or "monthly" in order to delay or prevent the issue from occurring.

For me, every time Automatic Maintenance runs in the background, it will cause an irrecoverable display driver crash, which will effectively turn the PC monitor signal off permanently unless you do a hard reset. NOTE: This is with the Power settings set to "Never Sleep" and "Always On" for everything.

What is most annoying is that it will randomly happen at the most inconvenient times.

Until Microsoft sees the wisdom in allowing automatic updates/maintenance to become user controllable again, I would not be upgrading to Windows 10 until the very last minute on 29th July 2016.

    • Did you get the home or pro version?

If you got home then yeah you're stuck but if you got win10pro then you can use the group policy editor to make updates optional again (instructions are floating around.)

Hey guys, does anyone know if it's possible to do a clean install on an OEM windows copy. I understand you first have to upgrade, then install a clean copy from USB/DVD, but you need your product key? I used Belarc software to (supposedly) retrieve it. Would this method work?

    • -1

      There's this guide here
      http://lifehacker.com/how-to-do-a-clean-install-of-windows-1…

There's no need for the product key. According to Lifehacker:

If you were previously a Windows 7 or 8 user, you are eligible for a free upgrade. However, according to Microsoft, you have to upgrade an existing computer to do so. So, even if you want to do a clean install, wait for the Windows 10 update to hit your computer, then install the upgrade first. It feels like a waste of time, but it’s the only way to ensure you you get your free license. Once you’ve done so, you won’t need a key—Windows will just “know” your computer from then on, even if you erase the drive. Just skip any prompts for license keys, and after installing Windows 10 it should activate itself automatically.

I think Microsoft is actually collecting some kind of digital fingerprint from your device and using it to automatically identify and then validate Windows 10 when you (clean) install.

      • +1

        that is of crap

cos if I get a new motherboard or cpu or install on another pc

I won't be able to install windows 10 on it.

At least if the CD key you can install it on any pc.

      • Great. I've got around 10 standalone PC's in my work environment I want to upgrade from Windows 7 Pro 32 bit to Windows 10 Pro 64 bit.

Seems the only option is to upgrade them all and then do a clean install to 64 bit.

      • Hi mate. Followed these instructions, seems to have went well. Upgraded first, had a mess around, then went for the clean install over the top. All seems to have worked, but for some reason it's install the 32bit version. I was on Windows 7 pro 64, then to 10 pro 64 bit, but the clean install is 32. Where abouts did I screw it up?

    • Upgrade your current 7/8 version then clean install. Worked fine for me.

    • +1

Can confirm upgrade then clean install works fine. Just skip all the key request and it will activate once you log into windows. Don't need your key.

  • when it does happen i have prepared a spare drive will run win 10 on it and see if it goes as good it claims.not any good just reformat the spare drive and continue with the orginal win 7 drive….

  • Tried, got "Something Happened" gave up.

    • During installation or trying to get the update? If the latter, just download direct from here http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

      • I got the installer from that page and chose update.

      • How will this help in trying to get the update? The update icon wont show up on my Windows 8.1 Pro desktop. It came up on my windows 7 laptop. I tried the "get windows app" and it says everything is fine. I also tried the CNet App and it needs me to muck around with the registry files which I don't feel comfortable doing. Will this help me?

        • Did you try this? It will download the iso for you.

        • @ozhunter: But don't I need to upgrade to windows 10 through the existing windows to get the CD key? It looks like this is for someone who is trying to clean install rather than get windows 10.

Edit: Turns out by changing the language to English (United States) fixed the problem.

        • @El Grande:

But don't I need to upgrade to windows 10 through the existing windows to get the CD key?

That link is for you to download Windows 10, which you then will upgrade your current Windows 7/8. It doesn't matter where you get Windows 10 from, but that link is to get it directly from Microsoft.

    • +1

      @fruit try this

Control panel > region > change location > Administrative > change system Locale > change it to English (United states)

      • You sir are awesome. English (Australia) was causing all the problems with me not getting the upgrade icon.

    • Same , I've gotten the something happened on 3 machines, tried that site using media tool upgrading and dloading the ISO, always 'something happened'. I officially give up.

      • +2

@t_C to fix "something happned" try changing the region to English (united states)

        • Thanks it looks like its working now, is Australia not yet supposed to receive the upgrade or is it a bug?

  • i have a question… how do i upgrade!? D:

  • As soon as I get uncapped Vodafail data this weekend I will be updating my i3 NUC which I have built as a testbed for W10. Wifi Sense and automatic driver updates have me a bit worried though.

    • +2

      Wifi Sense

      What the???
Thanks, I had missed this new 'feature.'
While I'm not (yet!) reaching for the tinfoil hat and shotty… this is a whole heap of bad.
And it's on by default (express settings.)

If anyone wants more info: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/wi-fi-sense-fa…

      • +1

Yep….its bad in a big way for a lot of us…..but I intend to safeguard all my AP's and turn off the bloody "feature". No need for tinfoil hats yet, just add "_optout" to your SSID (ie "Home_5G" becomes "Home_5G_optout")

  • One of my notebooks upgraded this morning. Took about two hours all up.

But I'd forgotten that I had secondary Cakewalk and Melodyne installations on it. None of the synths work any more. To be expected I suppose, but on past experience it will take cakewalk a year or two to catch up.

  • I was keen on windows 10 until I got an email from our info sec guy in the office today.

I have serious concerns about my privacy.

I won't share his email; but this summarises it quite nicely.

    http://thenextweb.com/microsoft/2015/07/29/wind-nos/

    • Just go through all the settings and turn off all the Microsoft "spyware". Only takes a few minutes.
      OR
Use a secondary Windows account that has nothing on it and let that be your PC's windows account. Anytime you need to do private/business work just sign into your main WIndows account through a web browser.

      • Fair points. Will probably jump regardless, but want to make sure what I'm getting myself into.

        • I installed it yesterday. It is soooo good. I have WIndows 10 Pro because I'm a student and I get that massive discount for the Pro version. The Office 365 has become a lot more enjoyable to, because all MS products have been streamlined to work with Windows 10 with ease. It is so easy to manage files and access them with a few short clicks.
I love everything about it except the fact that Microsoft Edge (new MS web browser) does not support plugins. Multiple desktops, Cortana actually WORKS, boot times are extremely quick, DX12 games coming out at the end of this year, the search bar and notifications side panel on the taskbar are extremely responsive and useful. Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 is excellent and has everything I need to develop software. I could go on for a while.

Just a heads up, when you install windows 10 it will take you to the mini setup wizard where you can choose the name of the PC and turn off all the MS spyware. Just click "customise" as oppose to "use recommended/express settings".

        • +1

@tendollar: Also make an informed decision about whether you want to opt-out of having your Internet bandwidth used for peer-to-peer update sharing.

If you've got multiple PCs on your LAN, you might like to set it to "PCs on my local network".

        • +1

          @Thrift:

Thank you so much!! I wonder if BLizzard Entertainment's desktop application has this option, because I know it has p2p updating, but I have never seen an option to turn it off.

        • @tendollar: thanks for the thoughts, folks

  • Tested Windows 10 exhaustively with 3 laptops on all the sw installed. I am very happy with it. TIP: Unless you have to go for a clean install, go with Microsoft installation process eg let it download and install by Microsoft processes. (Hope you have the bandwidth purchased)
Everything in my laptop works as expected and more, specifically my cctv cameras that works on XP & Vista that doesn't work on Windows 8, now works on Windows 10. (btw, my cctv cameras are "cloud" recorded and I can review realtime or recorded)

If anyone still having problems and getting the ultra helpful "Something happened" message, you can do the following:

    1. Download the ISO from here : http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10. Make sure you select the right version (32 bit or 64).

    2. Once the ISO is downloaded on the PC that you need to upgrade, right click and mount the iso.

    3. Double click on setup.exe and enjoy the ride.

    4. You can thank me later.

Has anyone been able to clean install without an upgrade?

I want to buy a key for win 7 or 8 off redit for the PC I'm about to build, but never install that version of windows and then just use the 7/8 key to install 10? Or do you have to upgrade first?

    • +1

      You have to upgrade first.

I clean installed without upgrading on my macbook, and it won't accept my windows 8 key.

      • So after you upgraded, did they give you a new key or is it the same key, but the "upgraded" status is recorded on their remote server?

        • +1

Once you upgrade, Windows 10 will be activated. If you clean install afterwards, it will still be activated(just click skip when asked for the product key during installation)

The product key is pretty much gone.

        • @ozhunter: Wait, so every time you install it in the future it will never ask for a key again (or rather you don't have to enter it)?

I presume it recognizes your computer based on the hardware inside it and that computer is linked to the key. What if you've deactivated it and want to put it on a different system?

        • @lostn:

Wait, so every time you install it in the future it will never ask for a key again (or rather you don't have to enter it)?

          Correct

What if you've deactivated it and want to put it on a different system?

No idea, likely have to call microsoft.

        • @lostn: What if you've deactivated it and want to put it on a different system?

I am betting you can't do this becuase of the licence.

        • @lostn: You can't do this because of the licence - it's tied to the machine (apparently mainly to the motherboard).

I upgraded my test laptop, then swapped the HDD with a new SDD and clean installed. Skipped the key steps, Windows finished installing, and checking the status shows "Activated".

  • I installed it and then had to unintelligible it. No network connection. Atheros network card doesn't have a compatible driver for windows 10 yet….

  • It asks for a Product Key on my HP250 laptop with Win 8.1.

The laptop does not come with a Windows CD or DVD, and it won't accept the serial number that Speccy finds for me.

    • Are you updating or clean install?

      • That could be it, thanks.

        I downloaded the ISO file.

  • Speed, in particular the boot up time, is supposed to be better than Windows 7. Has anyone noticed this?

It's one feature which could possibly swing me to upgrading.

    • Yes it is faster than 7. Windows 8 was as well.

  • No I won't be upgrading.

I'm happy with win7, I don't need a content driven OS nor want it, I don't like the Privacy T&C, I don't like the forced updates and beta features. I don't find win10 terrible at all, simply that it's not for me. I'll update my sons laptop though he may like it.

Having said all that I've not booted into win7 this last week, since trying OSX86 Yosemite 10.10.4. Never thought that'd happen.

  • is android dead?

  • +1

Tried win 10. Made my computer so much slower!! Going back to 8.1.

    • How much slower?

  • I updated 2 desktops and a tab all working fine. Desktops got updated then clean installs.

Tried updating a laptop but its asking for a serial at the start of the upgrade. Never appeared on the other three machines.

  • If there aren't any W10 drivers for your hardware (yet) should you use W7 or W8 drivers? Which is better?

    • Windows 8 drivers.

  • Does anyone know how to disable the confirmation that sometimes appears where it says you need Administrator privileges to perform an operation? I have UAC on Never Notify, but it still has to notify me for Admin privileges. W7 never had that problem.

Also, a bunch of my older apps don't work in Win 10, and some of my hardware doesn't have drivers. :(

I can't plug my Galaxy S6 into my PC anymore. I can plug it and it will charge, but I can't put any files on. It doesn't appear in My Computer.

    • Are you looking at the "Quick Access instead of "This PC"? (just checking)

If you've upgraded from Windows 7/8.1, reinstall the Samsung drivers, that might help.
I am having no problems with two of my devices, so hmmm… If you want to check whether the phone is recognised by the Windows 10, I guess you could use the Phone Companion bloat app that's new on Windows 10.

  • I went back to installing Windows 8.1 Pro (fresh), but when I enter my license key, MS complained that the license key can only be used for upgrading to the "Media Centre" and cannot be used for installs. I don't have my original Windows 8.1 Pro key.

How do I find what my Win 8.1 Pro license key WAS before I upgraded to the Media Centre pack?
I tried uninstalling Media pack, but I am still on the Media Centre license :-(

    Thanks
