Lenovo is having a price drop on their current gaming laptop range Y40 and Y50. The base model actually gets the most discount.

Lenovo Y40-80 999

  • Core i5-5200U
  • 14" Full HD
  • AMD Radeon R9 M275 2GB
  • 8GB RAM
  • 1TB HDD + 8GB cache

Lenovo Y50-70 $1,199

  • Core i5-4210H
  • 15.6" Full HD
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 2GB
  • 8GB RAM
  • 1TB HDD

You can also get a Dual Mode WL Touch Mouse N700 for $1 more. AMD Radeon R9 M275 2GB on the Y40-80 is probably only good for low-resolution gaming and GTX 960M on Y50-70 is significantly better. Add $300 more to Y50-70 also gets you upgrade to Core i7-4710HQ & 256GB SSD.

  • Why do manufacturers continue to insist on HHD hybrids on computers made for gaming. It's a stupid bottleneck.

    • Two reasons:

      1) it's a lot cheaper

      2) most tests run show virtually no improvement in gaming going from HDD to SSD, with the exception of some poorly optimised games like the ArmA series. As long as you have a sufficient amount of RAM

Do you get kick backs from Lenovo for each purchase redirect from ozbargain?

  • Damn, when did Lenovo start to sell Y series in Australia? Wouldn't go for Dell if I knew this.

    • Lenovo products have high failure rates and poor support.
I had a Lenovo tech come out last week to troubleshoot a problem with USB, replaced the mobo, fried the new mobo, put the old one back, fried that one as well.

I would go Dell over Lenovo, all else being equal.

      • Sure it wasn't just the tech considering he friend both mobo's?

        • Given a USB issue required a new MOBO on a 3k laptop that lives in an office environment and was < 1 year old, I would say it was both.
If they cant employ good techs, what good is the support?

    Don't forget 7.2 percent cashback.

    • I forgot, how do we achieve this again?

      • +2

Click on "Cashback" just below "Go to Deal" above, and click on Cashrewards' logo as they are the one offering 7.2% cashback.

        • Thanks for that. I did a search earlier when I was on my phone and I think I found a list of Cashrewards and one was for 10% off… I'm trying to find it again.

  • Is the Y40-80 much better than the mid-high end E450?

    • +1

It has better GPU but (1) heavier (2) more expensive and yet R9 M275 is still slow for games from the last 2-3 years, if you want to play in FHD.

      • Mainly want a decent lappy to stream live sports as crisply as possible onto my tv. IS the E450 able to get this done well enough?

Nice deal.. FYI - The entry Y50 model however is only a 2 core i5 (4 threads) and the 4000 series. The Y40 has the more updated 5000 series CPU (but all dual cores - even the i7).

  • Good deal, not sure if Lenovo changed the FHD screens on the Y50. I saw a couple of FHD (1080p) Y50's on display in taiwan and the screen colours were all washed out. Apparently Lenovo was using Chimei displays and alot of people who bought them ended up replacing the screens.

The Y50 4k version on the other hand uses a Samsung IPS-equiv screen and the colours are amazing. Having said that, the 4k screen tears when playing games such as bioshock 3:

It's true that Lenovo support is hopeless. I lost a back panel screw on my Y50 and was looking for a replacement. Got transferred to three different numbers, then asked to email them the problem (saying they will reply instantly) and never heard back. I did buy my machine overseas and it isn't supported locally in Australia but one would think they wouldn't mind giving you the part number for the screw.

    • but one would think they wouldn't mind giving you the part number for the screw.

Compared to other manufacturers, they have at least tended to be pretty good at making maintenance manuals publicly available. Seems to remain true for the Y50.

Sometimes they contain little errors, but compared to working on the internals without any guidance, they're a godsend.

      • Thanks, yes, i ended up resorting to the online maintenance manual but couldn't find the screw on sale any where.

    • I don't think the 10% stacks with the GAMING coupon code.

    • 10% off doesnt stack with the $600 off :(

  • Is this enough for video editing HD videos?
