IT Estate: Problem Getting Money Refunded

Hello fellow Ozbaraginers,
I am having issues with this company IT Estate!
I bought some Eneloops from this short lived deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/204316 and did something I wouldn't normally do, I paid with bank transfer. Their ancient website shepherds you into a poor choice as they have no Paypal (warning sign) and they add a 3% credit card surcharge that no-one wants to pay. I had "kind of" heard of them though not bought before and I know they have had quite a few deals up on Ozbargain.
Problems started pretty much immediately, although at first I was not worried.

I had to register to make the order and that all went as expected with an order number and normal-looking account but once I logged out, that was it, I was never able to log in again. I did not receive an email confirmation of the order but luckily I copied the sale page.
After hearing absolutely nothing, I called them early in the week to confirm the order. I was told it was over subscribed (sound familiar?). I said OK well lets just cancel it then. Still not worried.
Come the due date of the return and no money, I called again and this is when it starts getting dubious. The woman I spoke to, Sindy, said that there was a "problem" with the details of my return (computer store having problem with data entry for a refund, right…) and it had been returned to them by the bank.
The woman got strangely brusque and I got the idea this was certainly not the first time they had had "problems" with refunds. She said they would send me a remittance form to confirm my bank detail "within five minutes". Got home about five hours later… no email. I checked my original email at the beginning of the refund process and all my data was 100% correct. I have since emailed them all the data (again) with a large font request for confirmations of the email and the refund. Nothing.
A obvious question occurred to me as soon as I hung up; "why wouldn't an honest business call or contact a customer immediately if there a refund was returned by the bank?". I didn't like the obvious answer I came up with.
Searching here revealed a long history with these people. See the recent Sony thread:

I've bought stuff from them before, no major problems (case, fans, stuff like that). I did have an issue where they took a few extra days to deliver something. Never had to get a refund though, and always paid by credit card (or maybe they had Paypal then? It was a year ago now, I guess).

How much money are we talking? Do you live near their store at North Rocks, NSW?

I had a similar problem at the end of last year, I placed an order and got a confirmation but it never shipped. I cancelled my order after they didn't respond to 2 emails or answer their phone. I sent another email and made several more calls requesting a refund but they never responded.

I was eventually able to get a refund but I had to go in to the shop and request one in person.

From reading other peoples' experiences here and on Whirlpool, it seems personal shopping is OK. Its online where the game playing begins and especially if they are holding your payment but can't deliver. In the Sony thread linked people were speculating they pull stunts to get over short term liquidity issues. Google reviews are equally interesting.

  • I think IT Estate sprung up just about overnight from the ashes of Custo (who I believe went bankrupt) many years ago on the same site. Thought it may have been a scam then but that was a decade ago and I've bought quite a bit over the years without issue since then.

Would just keep calling/harassing to get that refund, but as far as I know they are legit.

  • it estate are legit. they've been around since the north rocks computer markets. always collected items from their shop and paid with cash or eftpos.
