  • Your RRP on the in-ceilings is a bit much but still a great deal OP (50% cheaper than eBay).

  • Are the 6 and 6.5" in ceilings any good for home theatre? The description for the 6.5 sounds like it is designed for outdoor use not home theatre?

    • They are good for surrounds, would not use them as fronts.

      • Is 6" a bit small for rear speakers?

        • not necessarily, we have done 4.5 inch for rears before.

  • these prices are cheaper that bhphoto - isn't this a good deal then?

thought there'd be more votes. How is this brand? Experts weigh in?

    • +3

This is a well known and fairly popular brand in North America but not so much here… speaker/audio industry in Australia seems to be very much the usual mainstream brands and no one in my circle of friends would know what NAD or Wharfedale was if I did a name drop. Back in the day (like Denon, Cerwin Vega) Boston Acoustics used to be really high end stuff but since it has gone down a little but not much. That is just my opinion though and they still make some great gear. To be honest though I haven't been looking at audio equipment for a while.

The pricing on the speakers is a bargain when you compare to some of the other products on the market:
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/8-inch-Pair-Glass-Fibre-In-Ceilin…

Now look at the back of the HSi 460T2's:
      http://www.avgearshop.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/imag…

Now that is a solid little speaker! I bet it has some weight to it as big magnet is ALWAYS a good sign. Reckon I'll pick up a pair to use as surrounds as this deal is too good to pass up.

Such a good price it almost makes me want to buy a house just so I can install a home theatre! :P

  • I take it single stereo speakers need both left and right cabling.
Can a pair of these be used as normal left / right speakers?

  • So the Boston speakers are sold as singles? need 2 for stereo?

    • Each speaker is sold as a single but they have dual voice coils so one speaker can do stereo. Which I am not sure how that would work as a surround but that type of hook up generally would be best if you were only installing a single speaker into a hallway or in a single room. Otherwise if you want to use them as built in wall surrounds (that is what I am doing) you pick up two and just connect one speaker in series or parallel.. I can't remember which.

      http://www.regiscoyne.com/tech/spk_cab_wiring/

I think perhaps the rep can chime in here and answer a couple of these questions.

      • Presuming each speaker has separate inputs, you'd want to wire them in parallel - nominal impedance is 8ohm… Series would give you 16ohm, parallel would give you 4ohm. You'll (arguably) get better sound quality using a low impedance setup.

That said, it'll work either way. Great price for decent gear!

        • Does this apply to a single stereo speaker?
If it's rated at 8ohms, is this with both channels connected or just one?

        • I'm assuming the 8ohm is per channel here based on what Third_Gear said and the tech specs listed on the vendor's page. It stands to reason that if they are advertising it as a discrete stereo speaker, it would have separate left and right inputs rated at 8ohm impedance per channel.

General rule - connect a pair of speakers in series and you double the impedance. Connect them in parallel and the impedance is halved. A speaker will be rated by its impedance across +ve and -ve inputs, so it stands for a single stereo speaker, a two-way, 8-way or 100-way… the impedance across inputs is what matters.

  • Hi Rep, Can you do a deal on the Boston Acoustics SoundWareXS 5.1 Special Edition Home Theater Speaker System?

  • Wow i didnt know they made an In-Ceiling Subwoofer.
Boston Acoustics HSi S6W2 Dual 6" In-Ceiling Subwoofer
    http://www.digitalcinema.com.au/boston-acoustics-hsi-h6w2-du…
really like it but pretty sure rents would tell me off for cutting holes in my ceiling for the speakers.Although it does look really neat.
Just wondering how much does it usually cost just for the installation of Ceiling speakers ?
Kinda thinking of spending my tax return $ on soundproofing my room as well haha

  • Fantastic deal rep!
Just bought the in ceiling sub and 6.5 speaker.

I've seen a mounting bracket mentioned while googling the subwoofer - I'm building a new house - is this needed, and if so do you sell it?

  • If I buy 2 of the ceiling speakers for the bathroom, what else would I need to buy to set them up with an auxiliary dock? Thanks!
They seem like a Very good deal ???

    • you would need an amp that the dock would connect to

  • Great deal thanks Op. I went for the ask for forgiveness' rather than 'approval' option and picked up the in ceiling Subwoofer.

I'd replace my existing in ceilings but they're 8inch so my cut outs are too big :(. Any deals on larger in ceilings? I guess I could fill the gaps with some plasterboard and use 6.5's ?

standby relliksalta working on something for you

      http://www.digitalcinema.com.au/boston-acoustics-vsi-580t2-2…

put code "relliksalta" will bring it down to $189

      Only 2 in stock.

      • Hi rep.

Any other larger speakers in stock? Came back to get cide for 6.5" and sold out :(

        Thanks

      • Says out of stock… I guess I lose out ?

        • Yes, they are gone - you got ozbargained

        • @atish digitalcinema:

That's pretty crap. Maybe if you're going to make a deal from a specific request then you msg that person directly ?

And now I miss out on the 6 inch that I could have bought.

        • -1

          @relliksalta:

Either way you had to measure for the 6 inch anyway…

          You snooze you lose

        • @atish digitalcinema:

No I didnt. The 6 inch is SMALLER than my. current speakers so I know they fit. 8 inch were a bit bigger. Any other deals on larger speakers.

        • @relliksalta:

That makes no sense whatsoever - if the 6 inches are smaller that means you would have to re sheet or make the hole smaller somehow but if they are larger speakers all you need to do is make the hole a little bigger. I am sorry mate but you lost out.

I do have one single one left and a single one left of the non stereo version, externally they both look exactly the same. SO if you planning to use the stereo speaker as a mono speaker I could work something out for you.

        • @atish digitalcinema:

Go back and re read my first post this morning and tell me it makes no sense. I said id have to fill the hole but wanted to get larger to avoid it if I could. :)

These speakers are separates ie. Need one for left and one for right channel running off seperate amp channels.

        • @relliksalta:

Would you like the single one I have?

or have you considered these? http://www.digitalcinema.com.au/boston-acoustics-hsi-460t2-6…

        • @atish digitalcinema: so what's the deal for the 8's

        • @relliksalta: same deal

        • @atish digitalcinema:

Ah ok not sure about the 2 diff speaker config for the same deal. And the hsi ones look like the poor cousins. How did you so eloquently put it to your customer. I make no sense and I snooze n lose :). Thanks though.

        • +1

          @relliksalta:
To be fair, you're being a bit harsh on the rep. You asked for a deal, the rep gave it to you, you weren't sure if they'd fit, you got ozbargained, he offered you something else.
No love lost on ozbargain - it's Gumtree rules - if you've got the $$ and are quick enough you get the bargain

        • @driveahardbargain:

I see you've been busy negatively voting. Well done to you . I was the one who asked specifically for a deal. He even used my name as the code. All it needed was a msg, as we all know what ozbargain is like and there was only 1 pair. It's not like the 8 inch were part of the original deal.

I was then told I didn't make sense when my comments weren't read. I've not said anything harsh to the op and thanked him for his time.

  • Cheers, I have to get up in the roof when I get home top make sure that they'll fit. Assuming no one will cut in on me in the mean time :)

  • If these are only wired to one channel, does one of the tweeters just stay dormant?

Or any chance of a deal on a pair of standard in ceiling speakers??

  • I'm looking for some in-ceiling speakers for a games room I'm building. Will primarily be used for music although I might use them as rear surround speakers down the track. Can anyone make a recommendation? I was a bit slow on these - jumped on last night and both models had sold out.

  • Can you still do a deal on this one ? http://www.digitalcinema.com.au/boston-acoustics-hsi-460t2-6… code "thruston" brings down to $99

I notice that it is out of stock. Will you have any more at the $99 price ? (or something equivalent) Thanks!
