WD Elements 1.5TB External HDD - $148 @ BigW (Starts Boxing Day)

300

Starts Boxing Day. Officeworks have it for $159 (although could price match), but the cheapest on StaticICE is $165: http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?sourceid=Moziā€¦

Need an external HDD for my NAS. Probably won't have the rush like the Verbatim HDD a while back, but still a good deal.

  • Might get this to get my data of my POS Seagate (click of death, never getting a Seagate again). The problem transferring 1TB of data USB-USB takes FOREVER.

    • USB2 480mbps. Not much faster any other way. don't let the 3gbps sata claim fool you!

      :)

if you go USB > anything, its limited. if you go sata > usb it's of course limited.

  • I wouldn't recommend transferring usb to usb, do some and perform a hash check after to verify, enclosure is some kind of plastic but good price for all in one package

    no e-SATA?

    • Don't you think ur asking for too much??
      I mean it's 1.5tb for $148, ofc it has no e-SATA. Why ask…

  • power supplies on these things suck. I bought two of the OW 1tb ones and both power supplies died within 6 months, just ripped the case off and threw in the bin. Now I have two 8mb cache super slow internals.

don't waste your time or data.

  • my power supply died too… a quick google shows this is a rampant issue

I almost thought the drive itself died and thought all my files went down the drain, but it turned out to be the damn power supply (which they are not willing to replace just by itself! - which forced me to buy another drive just to recover my data)

    • I think you will find that these power supplies always die. ever since the WD 500gb drives til now, they are extremely poor quality and always die for no reason.

If you like your data, don't use this as a backup drive :)

      • Oh, now you have me worried. I use the 1TB version as a backup. Do you recommend a good brand?

        • if you plug it in one day and it doesn't turn on at all, go to Jaycar and buy a similar powered adaptor. The drive itself is fine, the power plug seems to die 99% of the time!

  • WD is about as reliable as hard drives get. I've got half dozen WD external drives and never had a trouble. I have had 2 seagate externals and both died within a week

  • This is alrgight, but it's a pretty cheap case. The elements are budget range, last i knew they weren't even made by Western Digital, only have a WD hard drive in them. I've read reviews of over heating on the elements previous models.

  • i believe with the new wd elements range that power pack has changed and is identical to the ones in the essential range.

  • I have had alot of problems with these drives. They have 1.5Tb WDC Green drives, which have a feature of parking the heads after 8 seconds. For some OS's that have accesses every 10 seconds, like LINUX. You will have very fast load/unload cycles with this drive.

The one I bought I returned for a new one, after transferring data to it, it would slow down to <1mb/sec transfers. If you google for it, this is a common problem, as the drive loads and unloads the head.

You can get a program called WDIDLE3.exe, which turns off this feature. It however still doesnt fix the problem for me.

  • Got one of these today at BigW Macarthur Square. They seemed to have quite a few left.
