Secret of Mana $4.99 (50% off)

Initially released in Japan in 1993, Secret of Mana took the world by storm with its innovative real-time battle system and gorgeously rendered world. It continues to stand out among other action RPGs for its seamless gameplay that anyone from beginner to veteran can enjoy.
One of the most memorable elements of the Mana series is the Ring Command menu system. With the single press of a button, a ring-shaped menu appears on the screen, where players can use items, change weapons, and do a variety of other actions without needing to switch screens. This Ring Command menu system for which the Mana series is so well known was first introduced in Secret of Mana and has since appeared in most games in the series.
Play as Randi and his two companions, Primm and Popoi, as they adventure all around the world. At the center of our epic story is the mystical power of Mana. Battle the empire in its quest for control of Mana. Befriend the eight elementals who wield the forces of nature itself. Numerous encounters await at every turn.
This game supports peripheral controllers.

This game was awesome on the super famicom…. anybody tested it on the android system?

    • +1

pair your phone / tablet / android media player up with some bluetooth joypad and play it just like it was on the famicom :) that's how I play the majority of my retro games now, on android / emulator / using a bluetooth joypad.

      • +1

i assumed you play outdoor? because if indoor would it be better run the emulator on laptop or desktop (bigger screen) using bluetooth joypad?
anyway, which joypad you recommend? thanks

        • +1

nah, indoor - during lunch. didnt bring tablet or joypad with me today, will post when I'm home later tonight.

EDIT: hmm, after reading some reviews it appears that multiplayer is NOT supported at all with the android version, so IF I was going to play this, I think I'd fire up my SNES emulator, sync two or more joypads and then play it under the emulator rather than on the (technically inferior) android port.

      • You pretty much need a bluetooth gamepad for it, because with the onscreen controls and the selection wheel it gets really annoying otherwise.

    • Works pretty well on the HTC M8, actually a very decent port.

Also curious to how it is on mobile… Totally wouldn't want to ruin my very fond memories of this game….

Thanks! I loved this game as a kid

  • Cant wait to try 2 players on one phone

whatever you do, don't look at the asking price of the original snes cartridge of this on ebay.

    • The cartridge that I used to own, along with Secret of Evermore and left it in a house when I moved out overnight :(

    • Jesus! Chucked out my copy years ago haha

      • The original cartridge with undamaged original box can fetch up to $500 on ebay straight-up. I've seen it go regularly for more through the auctions format. I paid off two weeks of my mortgage selling this game with a working SNES.

As nostalgic as i was for the lot, I have the rom and emulator on my desktop, and sad as it is to say, it's a better experience using an emulator on the PC than it was on the SNES.

        • i think the one with an average box goes for about 150+ on ebay. 500$, it must of been one that was mint condition.

        • @godofpizza: Received two copies of it as a kid for a birthday gift years and years ago by mistake. Never even opened the second game. That was the one I sold along with the still-working console.

So tempting to get this, but I already have a ROM of it on my original xbox though.
I doubt this would be a better playing experience.

    Best Action RPG ever made!
And what's better is you can play with 3 people simultaneously.
Very curious on how to play multiplayer on Android.

Still have it on my phone through SNES emulator, stopped just before going against the Mana Beast.
    My all time favorite game.

    Thanks!

Apparently, it's a port of the iOS version which doesn't have multiplayer… wonder if anyone can confirm that…

It's fine on Android. Controls take a little getting used to, but it's nothing too annoying.
Just two virtual pads on screen, it doesn't detract from the experience at all.
I haven't gotten to control the girl yet, so can't comment on how switching characters would work as there was no Select button from what I could see.
They've probably mapped it to something else.

The game is exactly as I remember, although I've only played about 10 minutes in.
Well worth the $5, I bought it at full price using my Google Survey credits, so can't complain.

Best game ever IMO, and the game I always go back to when I'm bored.

I never knew their names were Randi, Primm and Popoi!
I coincidently named my hero Randy once lol

Can't believe they're selling at $100+ on Ebay now.
I sold this a while ago for $50 for just the cartridge itself.

Anyone wondering SoM. (I've owned the IOS and Android versions for years.)

The mobile ports are slightly "harder" then the original. Monsters will now spawn on screen. (Instead of the original where you had to walk away and come back for any remaining ones over the 3 on screen too appear.) So leveling up is kinda faster.
Monsters don't have to be on the screen for them to use their magic on you where as you need to still be able to see them.
    Story is slightly improved.
    Weapon names are different.
Characters are changeable by clicking their portrait. Bringing up the menu brings them back to your location if they run off or get stuck/left behind.
Game is one player no multiplayer.
Music is the same as the original but video is runs on the Sword of Mana engine so GBA quality.
Now has a Auto save function

The game used to be buggy as when it was first released on mobile would crash randomly and music wouldn't loop but they have fixed the bugs in later releases.

    • How do you find the controls?
And do you think it is worth it?

      • +1

For $5 yep it's worth it. I have bought it 3 times at full price.

Controls are easy enough. Might be a bit random at first if you haven't played any games similar on phones/tablets. :)

  • Ahh, the memories!!

  • SOM on ebay is crazy. but better still look at the price of Harvest Moon

  • DJay 2 for $0.20 is great. Can hook up to Spotify and mix directly off your streaming music.

    • Lots of people complaining that the dev's failed to port it to Android properly and it's a poor beta that is ultra buggy and doesn't serve it's purpose.

Furthermore, there's nothing on that that states the benefits of the pro version over the free version?
