To increase the coverage in your house, the simple answer is that you need better antennas or more access points (connected by ethernet cable to your modem/router).

Range extenders have their own limitations.

The problem with wifi extenders is that they are unstable and halve your bandwidth.

Try getting a more powerful router. I can recommend you trying the Airport Extreme. Im sure there are other routers that are as good at a cheaper price point, you can give them a try if you want to.

  • I heard good things about the Archer D7 from TP-Link; might be worth looking into.

  • I don't like range extenders, you're halving your bandwidth and doubling your [lan] ping.

Run a cable to another part of the house and plug in another router. Or look at EOP

  • You can get wifi that has really high wattage. There's a limit to how high the wattage can go up to legally but I've been told my boss's wifi has a 2km range in his property out back.

    • Dont know how that can work in a practical setting - the data may reach the device with a high watt router, but the signals need to make it back too for actual communication! Its not a FM radio :)

  • I bought the TP-Link D7 modem-router on one of the OZB deals a while back (+ got the free dongle by mail). Set it up in the new place last month— & unbelievably, the room I'm now using as an office, which is only about 30ft away (1 std wall & open doorway between) disconnects my desktop PC frequently. I'm wondering if it's the PC's sh*tty wifi onboard…

Anyway, I put back the old Netgear DGND3700 & connected back up my Linksys E1500 router which I'd flashed with DD-WRT firmware (thus creating a "wireless bridge")- done! Instant, high-grade signal with live LAN ports, too.

I still get amazing speed, to boot.

    FYI

  • what did you end up going for op?

    i'm in the same boat
