  • Mark 1?

  • a7ii also really good price, but unfortunately no stock
if they become available - def worth a shot

    • Paxtons also has the a7ii at around that same price - $1597.95 (after the cash back)

    • I see what you did there

  • -7

    Price match at officeworks?

  • wait for MK2 to come out.. it is a great body if you already got sony NEX chop lens (like me), still Mk2 is the one to go for as it has the incam stabiliser, it would make all Canon / Nikon Lens on third party adaptor useful :)

    • +7

wait for MK2 to come out..

No need to wait, it has been out for quite a while…
      (I got mine last year)

    • +2

Wait for the Mark 3 if you want AF. Hopefully it will inherit the a7r2's focusing system, which will allow fast AF with Canon lenses.

    • really? i can use my Nikon 70~200 on mk2? what's the catch?

      • +2

Cant use the lens VR (anecdotal evidence seems to suggest is better in lens than on sensor for longer focal lengths), and, at moment, can't use auto-focus.

Apparently a Chinese company is close to releasing an adapter with auto focus and aperture control for Nikon lenses, but whether it will show same impressive performance that Canon lenses are showing on the A7Rii (not just A7ii) is anyone's guess.

Finally, a lens like 70-200 (I'm assuming 2.8) will be horribly out of balance with a little mirrorless body, and you'd probably get much better balance with a D810 or better still, a D4S.

        • Pretty much on the money here.

I will add that the A7Rii gets a massive AF improvements for the E-mount lenses and adapted Canon EF (via a Metabones Mk IV) due to the new sensor, very interesting stacked design. Having had a play with one it is most impressive, the EF lenses are now focusing almost as fast as on an EOS camera.

        • i have a d800. too heavey.

        • -1

          A D800 weighs in about 1kg (with battery). The 70-200 f/2.8 is about 1.5kg.

If you want to lighten your load, I'd suggest looking at your lens choices first :)

You could also consider something like a D750, it's actually not that much heavier or bigger than the new Sony A7II.

    • -1

Wait for MK8, price for MK2 will be $10

  • Wouldn't get mk 1 but mk 2 is tempting

    • +4

It's $780 cheaper and image quality will be identical.

      • someone already mentioned, mk2 in addition has the in-body stabiliser which helps with taking hand held shots

        • +3

And its also double the price.

        • +3

It also makes the whole camera bigger and heavier

        • @hen dawg:
its still way lighter and smaller than a D800

      • +1

but the A7ii has much better AF than the 1st gen A7.

    • +1

Mk 1 owner here, I didn't upgrade to the Mk 2, but the A7R2 looks good, hoping they bring the sensor technology and AF speed to a Mk 3.

I tested the Mk 2 and the IS is good, but the image quality is virtually identical

      • let me know if you upgrade… hopefully you got that great package deal last year, and you can do me an ozbargain rate on the 7 :)

        • Mines a bit older than that, and it is showing the signs of a well loved camera, so I am not sure if you would want it. That said I am keen to keep it for a while still, no sign of an A7 Mk3 yet.

      • +1

I went from a NEX-5, to a NEX-7, and then finally to an A7 (Mk1) and I don't see myself getting a new one any time soon. It's just about all I could ever want in a camera.

  • +3

I wish the a7R II was closer to my price range. Maybe in a couple of years, or if our dollar unexpectedly and unlikely explodes…

  • Those of you with one of these and a Canon EF lens, did you get a Metabones or a Fotodiox adapter? And where would you recommend I buy the adapter from? Thx

    • and if anyone is selling the whole package. let me know! I'm interested… missed it due to being a retard.

    • Sony was giving away the Metabones Mk III and Mk IV adapters this last time year, the Metabones has all the circuitry to allow focus/IS/aperture control. I don't have EF lenses (Nikon user) but I have used the Mk IV adapter on the A7/A7r and recently on a A7r2.

The Metabones are available locally (hence Sony Australia was giving them away on the previous promotion), the FotoDiox I suspect you will need to head online.

Note the EF50mm f/1.8 II does not AF on the Metabones Mk IV + A7 combination, I suspect you need USM or STM lenses for AF to work, I never did manage to work that one out.

NOTE: I don't work at a camera store anymore, I did up until about a year ago, but I still try to stay in the loop

      • Thanks for the info. The issue is that the Metabones Mk IV is nearly 4x the price of the Fotodiox Pro. You are right though, I can only find the Fotodiox online.

Both apparently support the auto functions of the Canon EF lens (though AF is not that fast). I have a EF24-105 f/4L which would be nice to have working on the full frame Sony.

Just curious about people's experiences with such adapters and whether it's worth the cost for the results obtained.

        • The EF24-105 I have used on the Metabones IV, it focuses, IS works, aperture works, just glacial slow with the AF (on an A7). Its a good lens, I would suggest you try to ebay/gumtree a metabones IV as a lot of people were claiming those at the time with little intention to use them so there may still be a glut of them on the market (it was most re-sellable adapter - Canon users are gulible) i claimed a LA-EA4 when I got my camera, since then I have acquired some old Minolta lenses to use with it, but I have mainly stuck to adapting the M-mount lenses (Voigtlander VM-E Close focus adapter) and my Nikon lenses (Novoflex NIK-LEM). The small, manual focus primes work really well on the camera, adapted AF lenses tend to be large, bulky and heavy leading to an unblanced kit.

        • @aim54x:

I have a Nikon 50mm 1.8D AF, and a Nikon 35mm 1.8G AF-S - which nikon adapter would you recommend?? I'm just about to splash out on this super sexy A7 deal argh :S

        • @ankor: Keep in mind you will not get any auto focus using Nikon lenses. I would recommend the Novoflex NIK-LEM adapter, its a very expensive, precision milled unit that has an aperture control ring so you can set your aperture on the G-type lenses, however they are expensive. I have also used the Metabones but I cannot recommend them, not for the cost (fit and finish is a disaster on those, a lot of the time you cannot get the lenses on without using serious force - both the Nikon F and Leica M variants). The other option is to try your luck with one of the cheap ebay ones, I have used Pixco and Kiwi adapters for other mounts, but you run the chance of the adapter not being the correct size (ie you focus past infinity, or it acts like an extension tube).

Is your 35/1.8 a DX lens? I have not tried this one on my A7 so I am not too sure how much vignette you will get (note to self I will try this when I get a chance).

        • @aim54x:

I was thinking that it would only be the 50mm to be adapted. I've been manual focusing with it in prior usage so that won't be an issue with the A7.
The 35mm is a DX lens, so I don't think it will actually work on the a7.
Thanks for the tips, I've been looking at the novoflex but considered it too expensive.

I might try to roll the dice with the Fotodiox Pro lens with aperture dial.

        • @ankor: The Novoflex is very expensive, I'll be interested to know how you go with the Fotodiox unit if you go that way.

        • +1

          @aim54x:

Just received this fotodiox today. It took B&H 8 days to get it to me from order date.
It's quite well built, the tolerance is very good and I've had no issues with either the 35mm or 50mm nikkor lenses that I have.

Since the adapter adds nearly 5cm to the length of the lens, you will find that the balance point with either lens is just past the body of the lens. I actually found it easier to manually focus on the a6000 compared to the d3100, since I was holding the lens like a rifle barrel, and the smaller size of the a6000 made it easier to focus.

          Having said that, I've now put up both nikon primes for sale, because I've won a hexanon 40mm, and then accidentally won a flektogon 35mm off ebay. :}

        • @ankor: Does this mean more mounts are on the way? M42 goodness

        • @aim54x:
yeah- already received the flektogon. Everything else looks great but there seems to possibly be some fungus on the rear element. uh oh..

Hopefully the m42 mount comes asap so I can review the image quality and see if it's affected at all.

If there's no effect, then I will continue using the lens, but expose it to heaps of UV light to try and stop the growth..

        • @ankor: stick it in the sun for a few hours, it will probably affect image quality unless it is small, but better to make sure it is killed off now rather than later.

Depending on what you have spent you could try to clean it.

        • @aim54x:

Well there were two imperfections on the rear glass, which can actually be unscrewed without removing the back plate and trying to realign everything so ensure the aperture works (which took me about an hour to do #$%#$^)..

After an hour of facepalming and putting the lens back together, I realised that I could have just unscrewed the rear lens element bit all along without all the shit I did. I've now cleaned one of two bits irking me. The second one, looks like it's inaccessible :(

Still, the optical quality should be very good and I might just get more flare or soemthing, hopefully..

        • @ankor: sounds like you have done as much as you can. Only thing left is to test it when the adapter arrives.

  • Agree with the best price so far. I managed $1228 from DigiDirect last week.

Edit: posted wrong reply and fixed up typo. Blargh

    • When you add in postage from Cambuy with insured shipping it's about the same then?

      • +1

Someone mentioned here that they managed to get DigiDirect to price match CamBuy's price.

For me I'm still not too fussed as I will claim back GST when I travel o/s next month, and with the $300 cashback on top of that it still is a very good buy overall, particularly for the budget that I had.

  • +1

probably the best deal since dec last year, where i got my A7 at aud 1097 with bonus metabone 4 adapter and 28-70 kid lense.

    • your one looks a better deal. do you have a link to previous deal?

      • +1

        here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/175302

i bought it and played around for 2 mths, decided it was not the thing i was looking for, so I claimed gst during the trip to US, and sold the whole thing there for 1400 usd in total, ended up earning around 700 aud and a free 2-mth usage thanks to the ridiculously weak aud.

then i regretted not having bought more LOL (had a friend bought 4)

        • oh, It was a very good deal. Especially for the people who need a kit lens and adapter (just me~). thank you for your link

    • The infamous Boxing Day deal…I was in Europe (was very happy to be there but missing that deal hurt!)

  • Good deal. The newer models look great (especially the A7RII) but the A7 can still take awesome photos.

  • I bought A7 from Digidirect as $1,119 by price matching with Cambuy

    • Well done ravilee…. Is that in store?

That hundred buck could be the so call "extra overheads" from some BS in Sydney store…More like they are trying to dip into cash back of customer again. After all its not like CameraBuy suddenly score a special price from Sony, they have been doing this price for a least a week according to Google cache.

      • I firstly chatted with them online to got a quotation last Monday morning and then I went to the Sydney store at lunch time.

  • Very very good deal. $819 for a full frame, cheaper than EBay, cheaper than second hand plus you get Australian waaranty. You could even claim GST in it to bring down the cost further.

  • +1

Price was upped to $1199 early this afternoon, unfortunately.

    • Was it $739 after cashback prior to this?

      • It was $819. Now it's $899. They changed the price to $1199 just after lunch, but only just changed the "after cashback" price just now.

Still a bargain, but a bit annoying.

  • No it was $1119 as per the title so $819 after cash back. Not sure why they added $80…

    • +1

Honest I suspect a strong case of price fixing. Especially when there are people asking for price match from DD already.

Funny retailer don't step on each other anymore like in the previous Christmas sales. That was a really good price fight.

    • BTW friend of mine was interested and try to call them today about the old price. Phone was constantly engage, very likly phone boom by phone calls from OZB. Poor them!!!

  • How does the a7 compare to the a6000? I know it's full-frame vs APS-C, but does it really make that big a difference? And what is better to travel with a7 or a6000? Can the a6000 fit in a pocket?

    • If you want a camera that fits in a pocket go get RX 100.
      A6000 has fast autofocus, A7 doesn't.

    • The a6000 just isn't as wide with the same lenses. Also, the a6000 has a built in flash for those times when you might want it.
Yes, you can put it in your pocket (with a small or pancake lens).
Check the comparison sites in the 'webs - there are plenty that compare the a6000 to the A7(1 & 2). The a6000 is still an excellent camera, however there's rumours of a new slightly higher model being announced soon….hence the a6000 price drop, I suspect.

    • +1

I would go a6000 for travel; small package and small lenses, but it's not really pocketable (maybe big coat pocket). I don't really like the non-centered small viewfinder on the a6000, though, but YMMV.

      • Cool - I just want a camera where I can change the lenses and get an idea of DSLR photographgy, hence i'm looking at mirrorless. I still haven't management to understand the difference in lenses though… is a pancake lense similar to a 3x optical zoom on a compact, and a 55-200 lens more like a 16x optical zoom on a compact? I'm trying to work out my total outlay for something useful. I definitely don't want to carry around a large camera everywhere.

e.g. $800 for camera body.. $200 x 2 for medium quality lensese.. $1400 bux all up?

        • Pancake lens usually is a wide-view lens, small fixed focal length, also known as "prime" lenses. They typically will have larger apertures than a zoom lens. Larger aperture (smaller f numbers) mean better in low light conditions. Disadvantage of prime lens are you can't zoom, you have to zoom with your feet.
55-200 lens is a zoom lens. Not sure how the multiplier works.
It really sounds like a Sony RX100 camera could be for you (powerful compact camera with DSLR controls, can fit in your pocket, perfect for travel).
Find a friend with a DSLR and have a play around with them, or go into a camera shop and ask for them to explain it to you, all you can see is theory without practice on the internet.

        • Both the a6000 and the A7 are mirrorless DSLR cameras - do you want full frame (A7) or APS-C (a6000)?

Both are very good cameras however with this discounted price on the A7 I would go for it. At release the a6000 was half the price of the A7 but now that the A7 with cash back is only a few 100 more than the a6000 it's a no brainer. Both cameras are light and much more compact than bigger Canikon DSLRs however they are not 'pocketable'.

Get into JB hifi or somewhere to hold each camera in your hand - best way to decide.

        • If you only want to spend $200 on lenses, definitely go a6000. The a6000 twin lens kit was going for $800 ish at some point and it really is very small. I'd say go in to a shop and see if it's something you're happy carrying around. Otherwise the rx100 (any version) is a brilliant but expensive pocket camera. The 16-50 pancake kit with the a6000 is nifty enough (and tiny!). Not sure about the zoom conversion but there's charts online if you want to get an idea.

        • +1

          @MissKitty:

Cool - i'll go have a play with it in the shops. The A7 is definitely a good price..and the full frame is enticing.

          Thanks for your input all

        • @MissKitty:

I got the a6000 + two lens pack last Xmas for $598 - bargain. Only wish I picked up the A7/adaptor/lens pack bargain too!

        • @MissKitty:

I've seen a lot of 28-70 FE kit lenses on ebay for 200. That might be worthwhile..

        • @ankor:

I am looking for one as we speak.

        • @MrMaxwell:
wow that is such a good price. Even on ebay second hand are going for $800! Good on you for getting a good deal! Happy ozbargaining!

        • @thierry:

Not even surw this price can be repeated due to our declining dollar..

        • Looks like those ebay entries from korea got snapped up. Cheapest 24-70 lens I can find now is either through gumtree, or through Camerasky @ $264.52 + shipping, and $515.00 after cashback + shipping for the 35mm prime.

          So potentially:

          Sony FE 28-70 kit
          http://www.camerasky.com.au/sony-sel2870-fe-28-70mm-f3-5-5-6…

          SONY CARL ZEISS SONNAR T* FE 35MM F/2.8 ZA LENS - SEL35F28Z
          http://www.cambuy.com.au/sony-carl-zeiss-sonnar-t-fe-35mm-f-…

          899 + 264.52 + 515 + shipping = 1678.52

Probably need another battery or two since the A7 is said to be terrible. So 1700 for a camera and prime in FF argh.

Alternatively, just buy a Nikon D5500 body for about 720-750 and use the three lenses I have already and save a shave under grand, and likely not sleep on the couch hmmz..

        • +1

          @ankor:

Cheapest 24-70 lens I can find now is either through gumtree

24-70 is a lot more expensive compared to the 28-70, cost is quite a big gap but there are image comparisons if you're interested.

Probably need another battery or two since the A7 is said to be terrible. So 1700 for a camera and prime in FF argh.

Turn off WIFI + NFC when not in use!
Extends the battery life by a lot! I noticed the battery drain when switching from a Canon 550D to a A7mk2. Once I read about the Wifi + NFC tip, my gosh it's just like a normal DSLR now :)

        • @cwongtech:

sorry that was a typo regarding the gumtree 24-70 and 28-70 comment. I ended up going the a6000 although I'm possibly going to face buyer's remorse. It's a far more discrete camera compared to the A7 + 35mm zeiss. Gone the opposite and decided on getting the a6000 and am now just about to order a fotodiox adaptor for my nikon 35mm and 50mm primes.

        • Better off getting a6000 if budget is a concern. Lenses for a7 are much more expensive. And as a beginner, you won't notice the difference. For example for telephoto, the 55-210 is $200ish vs $1300 for the 70-200/4. For primes there are the 16/2.8, 20/2.8, 50/1.8 and Sigma 19/30/60 which are cheap ranging from $180-$300. The cheapest a7 primes is $500-$1700. This is because almost all the a7 lenses are for enthusiast/pros and the only real budget lens is the 28-70 kit lens.

  • Hi Orpheus and all

Is it possible to get a6000 body only and 2 prime lenses under 1K?

My interest is in portrait, street photography (so low light, fast focus lense is important), and landscape (no tele).

My guess I only need 2 prime lenses:
    1. 35 to 50mm
    2. 10 to 14mm. Is it wide enough?

Or is there a lense that cover both?

Are mirrorless lenses (3/4, e-mount) more expensive compare to traditional DSLR?

Which brand and lenses do you suggest?

    Thanks in advance
